I can't believe that most people here are OK with those rate schemes.... I suppose if the local power company would decide that they charge you more for air condition power use than using a lamp, you would accept that to

Just because banks have been ripping people off with absorbent fees for years does not make this an acceptable business model.....

Unfortunately it's not in my car when we're traveling and the wife is working and needs to connect to her network at the office (same with myself). Tethering would beat the hell out of trying to find free wifi. Unforunately (or fortunately i guess) this only happens once or twice a month so certainly isn't worth paying another $20 for the "privilege" of using the data i've already paid for.

I'm really starting to itch for a jailbreak. I'm glad I kept my unlimited. I agree that tethering is a little too pricey.

Jailbreak all the way. I have been jailbreaking since the original. And for a ONE time 20$ fee for unlimited tethering with my mywi it's a no brainer.

I could pay ATT an extra 240$ a year capped at 2GB per month.

Or pay 20$ one time for unlimited tethering on my unlimited plan.

Which one will I choose ? Starts with my ends with wi

In the same way, AT&T can only allow tethering in two ways:
(a ) Charge more for tetherers, since they will be using more data
(b ) Charge everyone a higher flat fee.

Why should tethering be an extra fee if ur data is capped at 2gb already?

I guess it is a lot like the extra charge for texting. It doesn't cost nearly that and probably should be included for free as data, but they charge extra for it.

its not the same. when u pay for a txting plan u r paying to transmit more data. sure its overpriced but u r getting something extra. paying for tethering u dont get anything at all. ur still capped at 2gb.

Because their usage stats show that most people that pay for the 2gb plan don't actually use all or even most of that data every month. If you all of a sudden add a feature that all but guarantees higher levels of use, they gotta charge more.

Whenever they decided to charge $25 for the 2gb plan, their estimated costs were based on how much data they thought the average customer would use. 800mb, a gigabyte, I don't know.

Then they should have several different data plans, 200mb, 400mb, 600mb, etc. all the way up to several gigabytes, and then charge prices based on an expectation of full use.

They only offer the two plans specifically to screw their customers.

"We'll only offer a plan that's too small for almost everyone and a plan that's too large for almost everyone, they'll choose the larger plan and we'll get to charge them for bandwidth they don't use. It's brilliant! hahahahahahahaahahhahahahah!!!!!"

"But what if they decide to tether? Then they might use all their bandwidth?"

"....Uhh....WE'LL CHARGE THEM 20 BUCKS EXTRA FOR THE PRIVILEGE!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!"
