Are you aware of Apple Shift 4? It allows you to draw around a specific area. Apple shift 4 spacebar will put a little camera on the screen. Just move it to the window you want to capture and then click.

No, I wasn't aware of that, very cool, thanks for that. You learn something new every day! 😎

Press control option Apple 8 Turns screen into a B&W negative. Press them again to return to normal. Haven't found it that useful, but fun to do to a coworker who doesn't know about it.

Geez, you're just full of little gems! Is there a list of these types of commands anywhere, or do you just figure them out? 😉

I just don't know what to do. I went with my wife to the Apple Store yesterday to see the 30" Cinema Display, she gave the go ahead to get it if I want it. The the thing is this, I was overwhelmed by it's enormous size, I mean it is so huge it makes the 20" and 23" displays look like 12" and 15" respectively! Standing in front of it I had to turn my head to the left and right, and on web pages if it's open the whole size of the display there are huge sections of unused white real estate.. It really does seem like a display that you would use in sections. I'm just worried that it might be too big as to become uncomfortable.
Another thing that seems a little crazy, the 30" display says it ships in 1-2 weeks on the Apple Online Store but the Nvidia 6800 video card says it ships in 3-5 weeks. I need an objective review of the 30" display, I know it's gorgeous but have any of you who have received it find that it's at all uncomfortable to use on a daily basis?

At least text zoom in the browsers and stuff like MS Office should function a bit better while AA is on.

Not as much fuzzy text.

Whereas LCDs weren't really a good choice for people with vision problems, the 30 inch should make LCDs attractive for these people again.

Though I have really played around with any of Apple's widgets for these people, but it'll probably beat running a huge CRT at 640x480 for some of these people who can't read the small text.

I'm in the same ambivalent feeling myself. My wife was overwhelmed also when she saw the 30" yesterday.

I don't don't think that the large real estate would be a problem. Like most things you would make adjustments. It would allow for multiple large window open at the same time. Then after a while you will be thinking how did I ever get along without the 30"

What really blew us away was watching a Quicktime movie, full screen.

Funny you should mention it was a Quicktime movie that blew you away, I tried to play the last keynote with Quicktime at full screen on the 30" Cinema Display at the store, somehow it crashed the dual 2.5GHz G5 it was attached to.

Odd. Although my friend once crashed a G4 PowerMac by touching the mouse - couldn't believe it, maybe he was a distant relative to Bill Gates or something...

Do you mean that you had to restart or was it just a force quit?

I mean he had to do a hard restart with the power button, even doing control/command/eject would not restart it. It kind of frazzled the sales guy, first because he couldn't understand why it happened and second because he didn't know you can restart a Mac with the keyboard.

Was the 30" and the G5 OK after the restart? Sounds like a serious conflict occurred. 🙁

I have had a 30" for a couple of weeks now at work. I work for an architect using CAD and so the extra space to see the drawing is really good, and the quality/brightness is by far the best I have seen.
BUT... the screen is soooo big, it takes a while to get use to. and you end up using it differently with your email program and browser window open at the same time. For day to day use at home or not where size matters I would say it is too big, I feel slightly overwhelmed by it. And the desk space it takes up, I hide my G5 behind it 🙂

Lovely screen, can me easy to mislay cursor 😛

Oh, friends and visitors are left speechless when they see it.

The only problem now is that my TV at home is only 28", so this is going to cost me big... 🙁

Yes everything was ok after restart but I didn't try to play the Quicktime Keynote address again.

Jason, thanks for your input. I think I'm going to go for the 23" display over the 30" for two reasons, first because I can use the 23" displays with my Powerbooks as well as my G5. I can also get another 23" display if I ever feel the need for it. One problem is that a lot of the 23" Cinema Displays seem to have a color problem, they have a pink cast that mostly can be calibrated out but not totally. I will go to see the 30" again before I make my final decision.

Hello Guys.

I was going to go for the 30" but the long delays in the UK put me off.
Anyhow I purchased 2 x 23" Displays to go with my Dual 2ghz.

Not sure if I made the correct decision??

Another Apple vs IBM Pic

Left: Apple 30" Cinema Display (2560x1600, 29.7" diagonal)
Right: IBM T221 (3840x2400, 22.2" diagonal)

Both hanging off of an nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL in a dual 2.5GHz G5.

Physical size roughly to scale. The 2 browsers are the same size in terms of pixels (~1600 pixels high).

Looks like a nice setup to me! Really, if it's 30" vs. 2x23" I don't think you can go wrong either way... 🙂

Every time I see screenshots of that mammoth 30" I still get blown away. I thought the feeling would have worn off by now, but nope! 😱

I think that the feeling will continue for some time. This is just an awesome display. 😀

Yep, I agree. And the nice thing is, that will still be an amazing display in a year or so, when the price will be lower and I might be able to better justify picking one up! Sure, by then I'm sure there will be "better" displays out there, but honestly, that 30" will still be just as good IMO.

Quad 30" setup

I don't think many peoople will have two 30" displys... I mean that only cost $6400 + tax + a new PM G5 + Nvidia 6800 ultra.... I think comes out to be ~$10,000...
mmm..... drool

Imagine gaming on a setup like this Quad 30" setup! You would seriously get whiplash!

Anyone care to speculate if it's a fake and if it's real, why would you need such an outrageous setup for music editing/composing??

My guess is fake and it's a dual 30" thats been cleverly cloned - but I'm prepared to be proven wrong!

(sorry if this is posted elsewhere, I couldn't find it)
