Imagine gaming on a setup like this Quad 30" setup! You would seriously get whiplash!

Anyone care to speculate if it's a fake and if it's real, why would you need such an outrageous setup for music editing/composing??

My guess is fake and it's a dual 30" thats been cleverly cloned - but I'm prepared to be proven wrong!

(sorry if this is posted elsewhere, I couldn't find it)

😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱 😱

You can't get more than 2 ACD 30 running at full res out of a single Mac as there's only 1 AGP slot and no other card has dual-link DVI.

I would speculate it's faked - how else would you drive that thing? The 6800 can only support 2 30" displays via dual DVI, so how exactly would this even work? And why?!?

Do I have to wait until 2007 before I can huy a 30" iMac G5 ?

As nice as the Cinema HD Desplays are if I was going to buy a display that big , I would insist on getting it as part of an iMac G5 to help save space.

I'm really impressed by your setup. Just love the look of natural wood. It sets off your computer very well also.

Thanks, I have the G5 2.5 on a Marathon G5 Rackmount kit in a Synergy shelf with 19" rack. I also have an OmniMount and VESA adapter for the 30" but I haven't installed it yet. Been busy working on new projects so I can pay for these top-of-the-line items.

Left: Apple 30" Cinema Display (2560x1600, 29.7" diagonal)
Right: IBM T221 (3840x2400, 22.2" diagonal)

Both hanging off of an nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL in a dual 2.5GHz G5.

Physical size roughly to scale. The 2 browsers are the same size in terms of pixels (~1600 pixels high).

Dude ive been drooling over that T221 for a year now, its gotta be the sexiest display on the market if you want hi-res.

awesome stuff, what do you use it for exactly?

Nothing special, the usual programming, work, surfing stuff. I got hooked on high res when I bought the IBM T210 (2048x1536 20.8") several years ago. Once you get used to the smooth fonts and images that only high dpi displays can offer, you'll never look back. I wish IBM would make a T301 🙂

of course it's fake. Top two monitors are duplicated from the bottom two. Take a look at shadows.

...

I must say it is an impressive display. Ours came in today and I set it up next to the new 23" and 20" display. Make's that 20 feel like a 12" iBook or something, it was simply amazing.

Not exactly a PB 12" but this picture shows how an OS X desktop spread across eight 17" monitors with 1280x1024 resolution each (5120x2048 total) would look on different monitors. The sizes are to scale.

Edit: I added 12" and 14" iBook to the picture. Again, it's to scale. Note that with the graphics cards available, driving 4 Apple 30" at full res from a single G5 is currently not possible.

Very cool graphic, thanks for that. It really puts things into perspective!

Now when is Apple going to get off its lazy butt and come out with a card which can drive 4 30" displays? Come on Apple, you know everyone wants and needs that capability... 😛 😉

Four 30 Displays

I have been thinking about the idea of four 30" displays.

You could just have two G5s each with a 6800 card, and have a KVM switcher that you just have the keyboard and mouse hooked up to. It may not be the most convenient way to do it but it would work.

Also you would probably want to put all four 30" LCDs on articulating wall mounts. This way you could have the bottom two panels kissing the table bottom. This would bring down the top monitors by four inches.

Food for thought.

I saw the 30 display the first day they had it out at the Apple store and all I can say is that it is mind-boggling cool! Just stunning. There is something so right about the 30inch. In my mind this is the way that moniores should have always been.

Does the display feel like it is too big given the size of the desktop?

I wonder if iPhoto displays the pictures across the whole screen?

IMHO it's just the right size for most desktops.

It would be a matter of resizing the iPhoto window so that it will cover more real estate.

NVidia is the hold up

This can't be true, as worded, because NVidia doesn't make graphics cards. They let their partners make graphics cards. They may be having a hard time supplying the chips for the cards (but they are the same chips that PC users get, so I doubt it), but if any other aspect of the card was the hold-up, then it was Apple's fault, not NVidia...

It took my friend 3 months to get his Alienware (about 2 weeks ago) as he was waiting for the 6800. It is definitely NVidia that was the holdup.
