They really need to figure out a way to push out new emojis to devices without needing to do an OS update. It makes it somewhat difficult to use newer emojis right away, because the person on the other end could just see garbled text if they don't have the latest OS version.
exactly! if they can do this for XProtect, the anti-malware thing for macOS which downloads new malware signatures or whatever in the background completely transparently, they can do it for emojis too!

and don't tell me it won’t be possible because certain new emojis, like the multi-colored handshake ones recently introduced, require special UI. in this case, they could just not be available in the emoji picker but still render correctly when viewed.

I never understood why they need to add all the emojis that aren't expressions or gestures. Emoji are supposed to be representative and not a literal translation.

Does anyone really need/use the four different varieties of clocks? (⏰⏱⏲🕰) or the myriad nearly-identical books (📔📕📗📘📙📓📒).

You don't need to have both 🔍 and 🔎, 📷 and 📸, 🏔 and ⛰, or 🔑 and 🗝.

Add the emoji that matter, be mindful about representation, and clean up the cruft that nobody needs or uses.

(feel free to "OK Boomer" me if I'm way off base)

How are people so worked up about Emojis?

Even if you choose not to use them in conversation, plenty people use them for practical reasons. They may great quick, visual tags for things like lists, notes, calendar entires, group messages etc

Is it just me or has anyone noticed that Tim Cook is more concerned about BS “look more Bs that really isn’t changing your life but takes up ten minutes of stage time to tell you how creative we are with /MORE/ emotions!”

While China and competitors are pumping out actual innovation!?

I will give Apple a tip if the hat for the M processors, but believe it or not, that actually started under Steve Job and NOT Tim Cook!

Case in point the Ring has more innovative the Apple Watch. Or cameras from competitors, some are 3-5 times better! Roku has more shows and took an inclusive angle vs Apple TV and is just a better experience. Apple taking on Hollywood, let’s see if their in it for the long haul because they lack serious content vs those that have ten plus plus years!

Another point, Apple Watch can NOT take Notes but can take reminders… people need to take notes!

Mac OS is lacking innovation and consistency!

50,000 employees and yet it’s not the best it can be! Come on Tim Cook, you can do better!!

I wish that many (possibly most?) emoji were able to be selected in a two-step approach - design, then colour. Even pattern.

Such that, within a basic set of colours/patterns, all combinations of emoji and colour could be chosen. Instead of only allowing more-or-less real human skin colours, enable green (for Hulk-like characters), patterned (for vitiligo or tattoo), red (for sunburnt), any colour (for dyed hair), Jersey cow and not just Friesian, etc.

(And, rather having to do so every time, store all the combinations you have chosen for future re-use.)
I love this but each variation has a Unicode designation so that everyone else sees relatively the same emoticon (except the gun because they don’t have them in CA). So if you custom make an emoji when you send the Unicode to another person they will just see the generic one.

Thank goodness for search -- although can still be hard to find the one I want!
Yeah, very true. But still, often that means rather than...

tap emojis -> scroll to the right area -> quick finger poke and continue writing

...instead I have to...

tap emojis -> scroll to the right area -> can't seem to spot it where expected -> select the search box -> start typing out a word to describe it -> then click the right emoji -> then have to click back in the message area (since half the time I accidentally just continue typing the rest of the message in the emoji search box if I'm not paying full attention, then have to type a couple of words again)

...by which point I've often ditched the whole idea of using the emoji in the first place unless I'm particularly set on it. 🤣

yes it does.
What a weird thing to get bothered by. A little smiley face which you don’t have to use. And if someone uses one to you can just tell them that you’re uncomfortable with the use of a little smiley face and that it bothers you. A true friend or a particularly perceptive child will surely understand. And if not you can block them. 💪
