Little secret: the $199 16gb nexus 7:

--has very few true tablet-optimized apps and therefore no apps in my book

How much you value this last point will decide whether you want a nexus 7 or not.

The $329 price point is WAY too high for anyone to ignore. Apple could have brought the price down to $269 b/c they make these devices cheaper than any other company can.

I bet Apple reverses course like when the original iphone came out and lowers the price within 2 months. .....

And despite all logic, Apple's going to sell a ton of these even though they don't deserve to in my book. As is typical with version 1 of an Apple product, you should avoid. Mini v2 will be the one to get.

I would have agreed with your point until I saw the demo today in the launch.. It is no comparison between Ipad mini and Nexus 7. The 16:9 ratio on a small tablet like Nexus make web surfing on the landscape mode useless. And in portrait mode, the web page shown in Nexus is still much, much smaller than the same page in Pad Mini. This is part of the difference because of the 16:9 vs 3:2 ratio but also the fact that 7 inches vs 7.85 inches size difference. So a simple surfing look much better on Ipad mini. Then you throw in better construction with premium material, lighter weight, camera etc. The price difference all of a sudden does not seems a big problem.

You make the point that Apple will sell a tons of them regardless of how you think it is unfair, so why would Apple reverse course????? That is a illogical conclusion. May be it is better for you to blame the dumb buyers who are willingly overpay Apple for Ipad mini.

I feel like it's a good price point.

And I was contemplating on buying a Nexus 7, actually. But I researched and realised there are few optimized apps.

There's only a $40 NZD difference between 16GB Nexus 7 and 16GB iPad mini. I know which one I'm getting.

Ok, Apple is now officially acknowledging that it's a greedy money hungry company. I'm sorry but if you pay 329 for a 16GB mini you've either got more money than common sense or are a complete moron. That's friggin rediculous. WOW!

You think that's ridiculous? Apple is selling the iPad Mini here in New Zealand for $470. And note that $329 USD converted to NZD is only $400... So what's that extra $70 for?

Isn't Google bringing the Nexus7 down to $200 USD, which would be about $300 NZD?

And even if they don't, the Nexus7 is going for $100 cheaper than the iPad Mini here: http://www.mobicity.co.nz/google-nexus-7-16gb-wifi.html

Let me guess that, despite signing up here over 4 years, you just found out that Apple isn't the Ikea of computer manufacturers.

Price in USA is tax exclusive.

400 x 1.15 (GST) is $460 :) blame the 15% GST

Was there a price cut? Last time I checked it was $440

Just a general complaint, I think I need the 32 gb for the mini but feel ripped off having to pay an additional $100 for an extra 16 gb in 2012. Amazon and Google are only charging an extra $50 and Apple's cost is far less.

From your signature:

"...power cord, power strip, Apple stickers , iPhone original boxes from all devices, wall chargers, headphones and sync cables"

ROFLMFAO!!! That is hilarious.

Mind = blown.

Do you know how much it costs Apple to make their SDD's go from 16GB to 32GB? $0.

:)

lots of confusion about the nexus 7 in this thread and in other threads:

the nexus 7 is $199 for 8 GB, and it's $249 for 16 Gb (everybody keeps using the $199 price for comparison--but that's the 8 GB price!)

IOW, the 16 GB iPad mini is $90 more than the 16 GB nexus 7.

Also, the iPad mini has a 5 MP camera, the nexus doesn't.

Now: here's the crunch--the mini will continue to receive iOS upgrades, can the nexus guarantee that it will continue to receive Android upgrades?

Bottom line: Would you pay $90 for a 5 MP camera and for easy iCloud sync for all your documents and photos??? remember that it'll sync to your iPhone and to your Mac??

Little secret: the $199 16gb nexus 7:

--is not crap
--is built well
--feels good
--has a quality screen
--has more pixels
--has good battery life
--has an arguably more innovative OS
--has very few true tablet-optimized apps and therefore no apps in my book

I bet Apple reverses course like when the original iphone came out and lowers the price within 2 months. It's way too much even for your most loyal customers. Had it had a retina screen, a big if, I know, we would have been saying wow that's a very very fair price. Had it even had an A6.

And despite all logic, Apple's going to sell a ton of these even though they don't deserve to in my book. As is typical with version 1 of an Apple product, you should avoid. Mini v2 will be the one to get.

Rather get mini, at least i don't have to repurchase the android version of my hundreds of apps.

Where have you been?. Google is dropping the 8gb Nexus 7 and has released a 32gb version. They have also repriced the line up as follows:

16gb Nexus 7 - $200 (vs $330 for a 16gb iPad mini)
32gb Nexus 7 - $250 (vs $430 for a 32gb iPad mini)

ie the iPad mini is $130 - $180 more than the Nexus 7 depending on which storage size you choose

Who said anything about having to repurchase android apps? I don't think you know how the Google ecosystem works.

He clearly means that he'd have to purchase (from google play) the same apps he's already purchased in the app store, so switching platforms would cost him $$.

Actually, you are the one that is confused.

The pricing you mentioned was mentioned in an earlier post so I won't repeat it.

Let's talk about your "crunch". Do you know what a Nexus device means? It means that it is a certified device for the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). What that means is that it gets first dibs at Android updates among other things. So you are completely wrong about that and yes the Nexus can guarantee updates.

Last month I was sure I would get a mini.

Last week I was sure I wouldn't because I plan on buying a Lumnia 920 and I think someone will come out with a 7-8 inch Windows 8 tablet. I have zero interest in an Android tablet.

After watching the keynote I was ready to order. But now that I have time to think about it I'm not sure. I don't mind the processor or the display but if it only has 512mg of RAM I'm not sure. I upgraded my iPad 2 because I had so much trouble with crashes. It got to the point I couldn't even run Safari with nothing opened.

I love the form factor. I want something really light and thin. But until I see a breakdown I'm on the fence again. Guess it was lucky they weren't taking pre-orders today because I was ready.

Just washy-washy I guess.

i find it interesting that $30 is such a big deal

yes i would rather get it less , but $329 is not such a big deal diff then $299 !?

relax people... & don't be haters :)

I have an iPhone 5 and an iPad 1st gen that I use for digital textbooks and watching videos on. I wish I had a lighter and smaller version, that I don't have to put in my backpack but can just put it in a jacket pocket. I think I will order a Mini and sell my 1st gen for ~200 bucks. 130 bucks to switch doesn't seem bad.

I don't mind the price if I felt I wasn't getting absolutely abused when it comes to specs.

I'm sorry but for $329, I expect Retina display. What I don't understand is Apple has to figure that many people who own an iPad probably also own an iPhone. There have been 3 iPhone generations that have now had a retina display. Did Apple not think that it would make a lot of people unhappy/mad to switch from one device that looks beautiful and then go to another (iPad Mini) and it looks subpar?

Honestly, I believe this pricing issue stems from another product in Apple's lineup, and that is the iPod touch. At $299 for the new iPod touch, Apple can't justify selling a bigger screen/bigger gadget for less than the new iPod touch. Who in their right mind would buy an iPod touch when you could get the mini for cheaper?

In my opinion, they should have made a 16GB version of the iPod touch and priced it at $199. That way they could have made the price for the iPad mini 16GB $299 or even $249.
