OK, get this for pitiful, pathetic, naked paranoia. (I'm ashamed to admit I even had this thought )

Would this type of application be useful to terrorists?

Before anybody jumps on me - I'm not suggesting in any way that these type of apps should be censored.

Just asking...

I might be losing it :p

No... I bet it would be useful to terrorist and tourist alike! :p

But really no more than any other tech... but I did see somewhere it kept a local cache of your movements in a local non-encrypted file. :p

I don't think Kodak can afford to acquire an air flight to go see a company, never the less buy them. :p

Thinking more on it... I bet it's Microsoft. I'm guessing Balmer figures they need to make a splash and he's seen how secrecy works in Apple favor, so he bought it and didn't tell anyone.... including his own board! I can see him in his office bouncing up and down with fiendish glee. :D

That being the case, MS Flight Simulator X would look pretty darn nice. Here's hoping that it is Apple, and Apple makes it available to developers (X-plane amongst others).

Go look in the mirror, you need to see a shrink immediately! :p

Yes they can be used by terrorists. And as we've seen, so can planes. But we didn't give those up.

Edit: no disrespect to anyone whos loss was greater than the average person due to terrorists.

Dam that some nice technology, did anyone actually us it before it was bought out and did it run that smooth as in the commerical?

If Apple really bought this company dam that is going to be one nice map system that iphone and ipad are going to have.

It looks amazing. I also don't use satellite view because it's distracting but my bigger fear is loading that level of detail. Maps on iOS is getting unusable primarily because it's so slow.

I want a faster way to enter a search, clear a search, revise a search or a route. Google's 3D is cool but the real win for that wasn't the 3D, it was the move to vector maps. Storing a 100mi radius of maps on your phone is what we need.

Yea, I would totally buy/download a map of my state if it meant less downloading...

What about Yahoo? There was just news that their Bing association has not worked as well as they thought it would and that they are working on some things that should put them back on the map (pun intended).

You're right. I'm standing in the corner with my face to the wall. :(

I will seek professional help immediately. :p

BTW, who did Apple finally hire for that Maps app position they announced so long ago? Did it happen to be someone from this company? If it was, I'd be inclined to think it was Apple—otherwise, not.

I don't care WHO bought as long as they make it available to ME! Hopefully on my iOS device du jour!

I prefer sat view and don't find it distracting at all. Hybrid even more so!

Nokia is the only one right now who is using C3 technology. That means it's Nokia or most likely Microsoft. With continuing growth of WP7, it only makes sense, as well as Nokia using same technology together with Microsoft. Google has no need for that, they are doing their own 3D GPS maps. I would rule Apple out too.

Google doesn't need it enough to spend $1B on it. Apple has the money, the motivation, the secretive nature alluded to by the seller, and the commitment to take mapping to "the next level", as Clive suggested.

It's 1 Billion Swedish Kronor/crowns (1B SEK), which is roughly 150 million USD.

Well, what about Microsoft and Apple using C3? Certainly could be a nice one-two in Googles gut?

Or, you could speculate and say in a few months, Nokia "was" the only one using C3 befor the ***** purchase.

Given Apple's kiss and make up with Nokia. I'll say it was a Redmond purchase. It will be cross licensed with iOS, and used to inflict pain on Google if possible.:apple:

$150 million? That's cheap. I wouldn't be surprised this has nothing to do with Apple. Imagination knows no bounds so let's here who you might think it could be.

Google and Apple have already been stated.

How about Eastman Kodak (didn't they just win their court battle with Apple [ca-ching] and aren't they in the business of images and patents, and don't they need to reinvent themselves for the 21st century)?

Don't forget, you've got all of Europe too.

Hah... Europe... Unlikely. There are not too many major european players in tech.

Fixed that for you...

You know that TomTom and Navigon are major players in the navigation field that could also very much like to use those 3D-maps. Google for their headquarters, if you like...

Though Garmin could also be interested

I hope it's google and not apple.
Given their google earth and maps it all fits well into their line of products.

At least if google have it it will be open for all to use. My fear is that if apple get it, it would be closed in and not open to all which would be a shame when it comes to products like this about the earth and mapping

Nokia uses C3 Technology in their mapping system; this is almost certainly a Nokia purchase, they've been beta testing their 3d mapping for several months now.

You mean like Google navigation software only for Android or their vector based maps only for Android?

This looks incredible, and I'd LOVE to have it!!! It's just too bad it wasn't Apple who bought it. Let's face it guys. Apple isn't going to pay top dollar for anything. They don't NEED to have the "killer feature" in their products. Other companies want/need tech like this far more than Apple, and are thus going to be willing to pay far more for it.
