Unluckily I don't have a 3-D printer...

Craigs List is your friend. Run an ad and someone will jump at the opportunity to use theirs to "print" you one for cheap. I had a plastic Mercedes car part 3D printed for almost nothing compared to Mercedes wanting to replace a bunch of related parts so that I could get the one part I actually needed. Ran an ad on CL and the replacement part looks as good as the original.

But Apple was counting on the revenue from selling those mounts for $499 to $1999 in designer colors to match your Apple watch bands.

Yes, what should follow is an announcement that Continuity Camera only works with the Belkin mounts for $499-$1999.

Why? Because, "we tested it with non-Belkin mounts and were not satisfied with the * experience." ;)

*profit

Jokes aside: I think this is a fantastic new feature putting a superior camera to a great use and potentially being able to get rid of notch in upcoming MBs too. What I'd really like to hear is that the same technology (plus FaceTime) is coming to tvOS so that one can pull off the same trick on the big screen too.

If you have your MacBook open you would hardly ever use this? But with the lid closed another story. Enough bleating about such a Non issue.

This is an excellent idea for those with a monitor that doesn’t have a webcam, or those that want widescreen for whatever reason.

And there is an app called Camo that lets you do this already, and also does it on windows machines.

iPhone XR and higher? That’s a bit confusing. The XR is the less expensive version of the XS and XS Max, but it was also unveiled after them… so are they included?

Magic mouse rear charging port all over. And people complained about Ive 🤣

Interesting.... I haven't delved into the tech details of this feature much, but I'd guess that maybe, it uses some of the processing power of the iPhone to do things like the portrait mode or keeping focus locked on your face as you move around in front of the camera? That would explain one reason you might use this even if you have a decent webcam with an open laptop lid.

I'd also think that they could do something where both cameras were simultaneously active? Use the built-in webcam for the typical videoconferencing situations but allow easy toggling to an iPhone on a stand, pointed another direction, to cut back and forth between scenes?

This is for developers to start working on solutions for when a 3D camera and LiDAR projector are standard on displays and MBP’s. This is for app development as we enter into the augmented web. How is this being missed?
Lol bro, that ship has sailed.

I just used my 4-D printer to make this awesome mount and camera. It took 1.21 gigawatts and 19 years.

I'm definitely in the camp of people who don't really understand what this is for. Don't all macbooks have cameras? What am I missing? I have a 2016 macbook pro and the camera works great, imo. No clue why I would even consider strapping a phone onto it.

I don't understand why anyone with a MacBook or iMac would even need this, given they have webcams built-in.

For Mini and Studio users, I can see a use case I guess, but it seems to me that a decent Logitech webcam only costs a little more and would be much easier to deal with than constantly having to put the phone back in the stand.
It is for the wide angle lens that allows two views. It will use 2 lenses at once so you can see the face of the person on FaceTime AND what is in front of them. This allows a presentation with one device that has 2 lenses on it. No single lens webcam can do this.

I am not sure everyone understands the point of this new feature.

It allows someone with an iPhone and a Mac to talk to someone on face time WHILE they can look at the desk where they are working.

What apple did was make it so the iPhone is using TWO DIFFERENT lenses at the same time. One lens will be for the face (the speaker) and the wide angle will be used to show what is on the desk in front of the screen. So I guess the wide angle is selecting a portion of the image to represent the "show area" while the lens you stare at will be for the face time part of the presentation.

Bottom line, they are utilizing to cameras at once. Sorry if was mentioned.

CORRECTION!!

The Mac is running the show on FaceTime with its front facing camera and then the iPhone is put on the Mac display and configured to focus on the desktop in front of the person on their Mac. Then they are put together on one call. See picture above in article

I think

Our you just place your iPhone next to the laptop and do the videoconferencing over that. Added benefit: You can keep working on your laptop, run the videoconferencing over stable 5G... and you can accidently put you phone horizontal if things get boring...

Apple should have probably released that during the pandemic... like in 2020 and not just for the mac... but that's asked too much innovation...

Anyway, I don't see why the phone needs to be mounted onto the monitor... any phone holder will do the job as well and is readily available...

They should make a mount to clip a MacBook to the iPhone in case you want to use the MacBook webcam instead of the iPhone’s camera

How is this 'news'??
It's just a generic stand. It does nothing to activate any special feature. So it's obvious a 3D printed stand would be a workable solution, as would most likely holding your handset??
I don't get why a 3D printed stand is news? lol

Because the built in webcams aren’t great and using your iPhone as a camera will be better quality than literally any webcam you can buy on the market. Since we already have iPhones, this will be a much cheaper alternative for streamers and just anyone that wants to not look like a potato on camera.

This will probably end up like Slofies and App Clips. Features that sound cool, but in reality don't gain traction.

Nobody will be dedicating their iPhone for a camera when their MacBook already has one.

If you want a sharper image, buy a 4K webcam.
