I don't understand why anyone with a MacBook or iMac would even need this, given they have webcams built-in.
A lot of them are junk, esp. with some of the Intel Macs. The one in my 2017 MacBook is basically useless if ambient light is low. And yes my MacBook supports Ventura.

However, I wouldn't hang it off my MacBook. I'd probably just mount it on a stand behind or beside the MacBook. That is if I were still using the MacBook for work, which I'm not, since I'm now working from home where I use a Mac mini and iMac.

For Mini and Studio users, I can see a use case I guess, but it seems to me that a decent Logitech webcam only costs a little more and would be much easier to deal with than constantly having to put the phone back in the stand.
For my 30" Cinema Display + Mac mini, I have a cheap Lenovo 1080p cam. In proper lighting it looks OK. Not awesome, but at least it's better than the one in my 2017 MacBook. However, in poor lighting it never balances the light correctly. With low ambient lighting it ups the gain so much that my face is a sea of blown out white and it doesn't come with native software for adjustments.

So, I bought a Logitech 922 Pro, which is their go-to 1080p camera. Guess what? It also sucks in poor lighting. At least it has software that allows you to adjust things better but to save myself the hassle, I just returned the Logitech and stuck with the Lenovo and try to make sure the room is better lit.

If the iPhone-as-webcam works better in various types of ambient light, then that's a big win for me.

BTW, my Canon dSLR has Canon OEM software for macOS that turns it into a webcam, but for the life of me I can't get it to work. This is not a surprise to me though, since Canon historically has had terrible software for its cameras.

I don’t want a mac studio display and when i’m on zoom i rather have either my a6400 or hopefully soon my iphone as a webcam than this annoying logitech webcam i got here

You know that, like, every webcam in the world that isnt built in clips on, right? Even expensive ones. I also would like to introduce you to a product I owned (still do actually, it's... somewhere... prob should go find that box...) that apple made that was very expensive and clipped to my very expensive powerbook - the original isight (pic from wikipedia below)

Yes, but I’m betting all those webcams including that one weigh less than an iPhone 13 Pro.

Too much of a chance for potential damage occurring from that kind of set up. I wouldn't risk it.
Hopefully, it works with a stand as well. I agree that I am wary of the thought of propping my 13 Pro Max on top of my MBA (not sure what the weight may do to the hinge over time), but I wouldn't mind investing in a stand to prop it up behind my laptop for the few occasions that I have a use for it.

Have anybody tried desk view and see how that works? Continuity camera is nothing amazing as there are already apps that can do this before. But desk view is whats new.

Granted, I was half paying attention watching the keynote sped up, but I honestly thought this was just Federighi making a punchline out of all the criticism over Apple cheaping out on their in-display cameras. Pretty corny though. "The solution to us not wanting to spend another buck two eighty on the webcam in your $2000 computer is, uh.. just use your phone instead! Maybe you can use this little clip, or some double stick tape, or superglue or something..."
lol

Does Apple have the balls to sell this for $2o. I imagine they do since they sold us all $2,000 laptops with ****** cameras

This. Why did they add a massive notch with this in the works. Stupid.

i resent the notch so much on the iphone. i've despised it since the iphone x, thought it was the most horrendous downgrade at the presentation.

on the other hand, the notch on the macbook goes entirely unnoticed for me. i think it's that thing people see when they think about it, but when one is actively working, it fades away to nothing

Its the opposite for me. I don't mind the notch on the iPhone, but don't like it on the Macbook. Maybe I'll get used to it once I upgrade to Macbook with a notch.

You could say the same thing with the iPhone, the notch on the phone fades away once you're doing tasks with it.

Why not just put a half decent webcam module in every MB in the first place?

Haven’t Apple (finally!) done that with the M2 Air? Guess this bodged and faintly ridiculous solution is for those with Mac Minis or previous gen laptops with grainy low light struggling 720p cams.

Or failing that, bring back the iSight, you know a low cost (ha!) dedicated webcam solution, that looks good.

Attaching your iPhone to your laptop with a mount and software connection is laughable. May as well get the duct tape out.

Something to do with the lid being too thin to put a decent webcam in it.

The 1080p webcam on the new MacBooks is an improvement, but let’s face it, laptop webcams are always not as good as phone cameras. At least there’s now an easy and convenient option for those who want a high quality webcam camera.

There’s also extra perks with using an iPhone camera such as center stage and Desk View which is quite awesome.

A great webcam - but a clumsy setup.
They only benefit: it stops you from playing around with your phone during calls - so I get it as a kind of „focus“ tool
