The material "plastic" does not crack on its own! It doesn't "self-destruct"! Therefore the cracks must have been stress fractures. This type of crack is obviously caused by bending, twisting, stretching or some other sort of deformation. To me, it therefore appears obvious that cracks in iPhone cases are the result of handling or rather mishandling.

In order to avoid such problems, it may be prudent to take particular care in inserting and removing headphone and docking plugs, avoiding wiggling them when doing so.

Just a few thoughts! :)

I couldn't disagree more. You would be hard pushed to find someone who treats their iPhone as good as i do mine. I am completely vain when it comes to my iPhone.

Apple admitted that it was a problem with the forming of the plastic. It is the same plastic used in the old white macbooks, and unfortunately due to the manufacturing process the plastic takes, sometimes minor defects can occur, and over time these spread to much bigger cracks.

If it was considered mishandling apple would not honour the replacements.

Mine developed a crack along the back about two weeks ago. I took it to the apple store last week and the genius barely glanced at it before going to the back to get me a replacement.

I wonder why Apple does replace the crack ones, because they know it's a design issue and not a user caused problem?

Do you happen to remember where you read about Apple admitting a problem? I have not been able to find this. Was it a press release?

I have been nothing but careful with my iPhone, I dont use the dock yet somehow even though I have a silicon sleeve - the plastic around the dock connector is cracked. Yeah sure it isnt affecting performance but none of my other cheaper phones ever cracked. They also cost significantly less than the iphone.

I honestly cannot remember, but apple genius' have said the same when i brought my iPhone and white macbook in to be fixed.

I understand that a lot of people like cases, but I have a real problem with a product being designed that requires a case to hold up under its normal and intended use. How do we accept that?

You look at any smart phone and most of them have cases for them.
Its just to help protect it better. People that abuse their phones should have a case for them. If you baby it then it wont crack and you dont need a case. I just like to have one incase I drop it.

There may be a few examples of people who baby the phone and it cracks but I think those are the exception to the rules.
I still think plastic was not the way to go but apple claim it was due to getting better reception

Speculation. I wouldn't say they *know* it's a design issue, but rather are willing to accept it as a potential problem. There is a difference, albeit small.

Complaints about a top-of-the-line product immediately get put in the limelight, whether or not the complaints are based in complete truth.

I pre-ordered my 3gs from an ATT store. How do I go about getting apple care coverage? I normally just purchase the insurance plan for phones, but in this case it's not available. Am I automatically covered by apple, or do I need to buy that separate from apple after the phone comes in?

Are there any tips or tricks to avoid cracks?
