Bragging about your sports car/SUV and its misuse of resources is not one of them.

I must have missed the vote where we elected you supreme resource allocator. Why do you get to unilaterally decide what type of use constitutes "misuse?"

1. Macrumors contributors are techies, thus may be more exacting and more likely to pick up/complain about minor flaws than the general user base.

True, but you could also say that the rest of the people, not having heard about the cracks never even noticed or thought to look for them. Some of them are so small. Even on here, so many people didn't notice until they came across this thread. Others might even have thought something they did caused the cracks etc. This might change if it gets worse though, of course.

2. A proportion of people will only join the forums and start to post when they have an issue, so the number of issues is likely to be overrepresented in the forum population.

Agreed. I'm sure there are loads of people with no problems, not taking part in the poll/thread.

I'm so sick of self-righteous Europeans. I'm allowed to say that BTW because I'm a German living in the US.

You would be a man if you would speak up and say that the Europeans are right what the environment concerns. Should I mention the Kyoto protocol again? It has nothing to do with self righteousness. You are in denial, because you don't want to feel ****** about yourself when you get in your Mustang GT or Ford Bronco.

BTW, I just remembered I forgot to buy shampoo, so I'm going to get in my 300HP sports car and drive 10 miles to walmart to pick up 1 bottle of $2.50 shampoo.

Thanks for proving my point.

Could y'all please take this to the StopGlobalWarming forums? Let's stay on topic...

Just looked at mine and has the exact same:( Not too worried as it really is hardly noticable but a bit worried it could be a sign of things to come.

Same exact spot on my black one. It wasn't like that until I started using the Headphones more often. :(

what are you people talking about? (^$#%^**(()&%$^

it seems the more posts there are in this thread... the more people get out of the subject. now, i'm not the "subject police", but i think people should be sharing more pertinent information about the "main tile of the thread... cracks". in other words, info that can help those who are facing the "cracks" problem. you know, the how you solved it, did you have to call someone special (management, apple care, etc.), how long did it take for an exchange, was the exchange also damaged, etc., etc., etc.

I have a 16gb iphone 3g from CPW in the uk, I cant see anything out the ordinary except the bloody silver apple logo is like a scratch magnet. its not bad because you only notice them when at a angle but I cant see any cracks as is reported on here.

I wrote a rather lengthy response to your original response to me, but sadly it got lost in browser cache limbo. It's really not worth writing it all again, as you're clearly just a self-righteous Green Gestapo/Carbon Cop using the same old tactics you guys use across the web: use exaggerated examples to prove your point and make attacks based on facts not in evidence.

You keep making posts accusing all Americans of driving large distances in gas guzzling vehicles for single purposes. The green crap has no business in this discussion, and the attack on the first individual by your ilk was unwarranted, accusing him of damaging the environment because he wanted what he paid for: a beautiful Apple product free of defects.

You then chimed in with allegations of a long drive in a big vehicle and extra iPhones having to be manufactured because of his returning products. No one knows how far the guy making several exchanges lives from the store, or how he's getting there, so why attack him for doing it without knowing the facts? You also take the typical European hate-stance towards the US and paint everyone who lives here with the same brush as lazy, uncaring, unwilling to change people. That is not the case, just as any stereotype cliche we might make about Europeans is not accurate about all of you.

I also challenge your assertion that additional environment-damaging iPhone units are being produced because people are turning defective ones in for replacement. It's not as if the defective ones are just thrown into the landfills. They are refurbished and provided as warranty replacements for others, and/or sold to those who are unwilling to pay full price for a factory new unit. Just in this very thread there were several posts from 1st gen iPhone owners expressing glee at the returns so soon, as it means AT&T will have refurbs for sale in a month or so.

Finally, you again paint all Americans with the lazy brush by insinuating that just because your fat girlfiend was too lazy to walk 300 meters to the school bus stop, that we all are. I've got news for you, I walked to school everyday from Kindergarten through most of High School, two miles both ways to one of the schools, and my three children did the same, as did all the neighborhood children here.

I did not disagree with your opening statement that it didn't hurt to consider how your activities might impact the environment, but I resent the exaggerated examples, stereotyping and not-so subtle EuroHate you spew at Americans in general.

The bottom line is that a gent returning his iPhone is such a small impact on the environment that you green police types ought to just shut up about it, you're only showing that you are as bad as any religious cult zealots in preaching your cause, and it damages your credibility.

Good luck with that. I have the same crack on mine, and of the 3 replacements at my apple store, they all had either cracks or dead pixels. I am beginning to think that cracks here are normal, and that most people have them but just don't notice them.

I disagree. I searched mine and the ones at my local Apple store that are abused daily, none had cracks.

Peter, I respect your passion on the subject but I think its best we agree to disagree. :)

Back on subject: Thus far I don't have any major cracks on my phone. By the headphone back there is a tiny tiny stress crack between the jack and the bezel. But I don't care about it. For me it does not make economic sense to waste my time money and effort returning it for such a minor cosmetic issue. :)

Frankly I don't care if the whole back looks like a cracked eggshell, so long as the cracks are superficial and don't effect the structural integrity of the phone. If the phone starts buckling or having bits break off then Its going back. If these are just glorified scratches, I could care less, I'll just slap a case on that bad boy and call it a day.

There was another poll that showed the majority use cases for their iphones and unless these individuals are reading these forums, they would not even think to take off the case and look for cracks. I had a case on my 1st iphone for almost a year and as far as I knew it could have been covered with cracks and I would have never known. That said, I'm thinking that so far the crack poll here shows about a rate of 16%. That may grow over time, but it probably is a reasonable indicator of the more general public I would think.

I think its is pretty obvious that this is not a situation caused by any sort of abuse whatsoever.

Agreed. I'm sure there are loads of people with no problems, not taking part in the poll/thread.

And there are probably loads of people with cracks known or unknown not taking part as well. There are certainly a lot of posts in this thread to the effect that "oh I didn't think to look till I saw this thread and then I looked and yes I do have some cracks". I'm betting that the ratio on the poll is probably not that far off. If there is a underlying manufacture problem, then the % will only get higher given time.

my iPhone is starting to get cracks around the top... i'm scared they are going to get worse.

my battery is also not the best i think.

is it a fairly simple process at an at&t store to get a replacement if i just tell them the problem.. or would it be better to go to the apple store?

I would wait. As yet there has not been any confirmation that it was only a bad batch, or that all iPhones are affected.

You could be getting a replacement that has the same problem. Some people have already reported this. I have some cracks and I'm waiting until there is some solid confirmation that the problem was with the first batches or until my iPhone really falls apart.

The battery problem is another matter though. If it really is broken or has bad capacity, than I would recommend to exchange and hope for the best as far as cracks are concerned.

So how many that see the cracks use cases? Perhaps it would help if when one posts that they have cracks, they could also post if they use a case for protection and if so which one???? BTW, I have a week 27 white 3g with no cracks.

Can somebody a poll or something:
if you have cracks, what week is your phone

I guess I don't have permissions to start a poll.

All this talk about cracks I didn't want to look at mine in fear of finding one. It looks like I had some around the camera lense and I'm kinda pissed about it. I doubt this warrants a return but it makes my sexy white phone look old and abused.

Note: I've ben using the INCIPIO soft case for a couple of weeks.

They might say well used! LOL!!!!:)

Why Buy Apple? Are we Crazy?

The Macbook cracks; the Macbook Pro is crap;
The iPhone cracks!

Why buy Apple ? Do we have a taste for suffering?

Have read the whole thread now!! Well I saw the mockup webpage and thought that was quite funny so I did one of my own!! There is a reason I did it though. I know a lot of people reading this thread are properly peeved off and not in great spirits at the moment with Apple, who are obviously having a few problems at the moment. To all the people with a cracked 3G iPhone I honestly feel really sorry for you. I'm planning on upgrading in a few weeks so I will possibly be in the same camp as you.

I think we should all stand back and take a wider view of this. If any company would replace your new phone because of a defect you can think yourself lucky that its Apple your dealing with. They are generally pretty good. Just live in hope!! The phones are literally cracking up. If your going to get sad and annoyed by it, that wont help. Anyone with a cracked phone just needs to try and see the funny side of it (I know that is extremely difficult) and hopefully you will get it replaced with a perfect one and that will be the end of another problem in your life.

Anyway, I hope everyone who is having problems finds the perfect resolution and to poke a bit of fun at our favourite fruity toy maker:

Talked to Apple, Sent Phone Back

So my phone cracked. I cursed. Decided I must have done something out of line, then found this thread via tuaw. Same cracks, same week 28. Called apple, described the problem, got a wonderful nice young lady that said they'd take a look. That was Wed, 5pm Eastern. Thursday, 10am, FedEx arrived with empty box. Friday, 10am, Apple has the phone and is "Diagnosing product." She told me to expect a new one Monday or Tues. I'm pretty frustrated with it, but Apple (specifically support) has been great.

So today, I called Apple on an unrelated item. (There are only 10 macs within 15 feet of me.) Mentioned to the guy that my phone had cracked, he said he hadn't heard about it. I sent him here. He looks, does the Dr. "veeeeery interesting" and posted it on the intranet at apple support so the other techs can take a look at the post and see the mounds of phone (all made at a similar time) cracking. Overall, i think things are looking great. Perhaps the wheels are being set in motion for a closer look at the manufacturing of the phones and, god willing, a recall of defective phones on an immediate basis.

Just my experience, your mileage my vary
-Evan

I started following the posts yesterday and as someone as already mentioned there was another very long thread on the Apple site that has now been removed. I don't see any cracks in my black, week 28, factory 85, phone yet, but I haven't used it much either. Incidentally, I went to the Apple store today to buy a case and I examined each one of the iPhones on display and there wasn't one crack. There was a long line in front of the store waiting to buy phones and the store was super busy. I've never had a phone that developed cracks so I would hope that Apple would replace the backs if this should become a "known issue".
