Pictures of cracks in black iPhone 3g

Here are pics of mine. The one in the white phone above look like minor - do you notice the plastic sort of raised when you're in the sun in between the cracks? Because I have similar on the side of mine, but those don't look as bad as the one I have on the top and bottom of my iPhone. Still minor, but annoying.

I've got a white one, I've been watching for cracks since I got it. They finally showed up today. A whole bunch around the camera lens and a few by the volume rocker.

I picked up my iphone 16GB in black yesterday finally after waiting 2 weeks for it and mine is a build week 31 and it has no scratches or cracks on it.

Scratches

I thought we were only talking about cracks randomly forming. Scratches are generally going to happen during regular use whether you like it or not.

Hmm, they look like the cracks you see on a flat surface when the finish is flaky. It looks like if the finish, varnish or sealer they used is about to flake. I don't know whether this will get worse or not, but I didn't want to take the chances. I really hope that when they receive my iPhone they wont say that these cracks, are too minor and charge me for two iPhones or something like that!

The only ones I'm going to worry about are the ones you see with the naked eye in bright sunlight. That should be the focus with regard to Apple. I seriously don't think they will do much otherwise.

I unpacked my 16GB White iPhone 3G today and it already had cracks at the volume rocker and other places on the left side. :(

Just got off the phone with Rogers and the CRS told me they had ordered me a black one instead, the lady made a mistake yesterday when she place the order, and I even asked twice; I'm getting the white one right? gosh!! So they canceled the order and now I have to wait 24-48 HRs to call again and place a different order... hmmm, I'm in love with mine right now that I almost want to forget about the cracks, but something is telling me I should get this fix.

3G Plastic Cracking CONTINUES!

ORIGINAL POST: 8/3/08. 6PM.
I am now on my 3rd iPhone 3G. I went into the Apple Store on Stockton St in downtown SF and was asked the EXACT same questions as 'element619' was asked. The genius who assisted me was playing dumb and said he had only briefly heard about the plastic housing cracking, yet asked the EXACT same questions, in the exact order. He gave me a new iPhone 3G on the spot. A friend was with me who was visiting from Chicago and he also had the same issues... white 16gig iPhone 3G, same questions were asked of him, in the same order. We both walked out with new phones. This tells us that Apple IS aware of the problem, the Genius's obviously are under instruction on what to do if someone complains about this issue, and Apple is trying to keep the noise about this to a bare minimum (deleting the original threads of this topic)...else there would NOT have been a line with over 100 people in it outside that store yesterday with people there to buy the iPhone 3G.

This issue is NOT just happening to the white model, its also the black... for those of you with the black model, you just can't see the cracks as well.

Good luck to those of you with cracks, I hope that your Apple Stores are as nice as ours is here in SF.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:

2ND POST: 8/5/08. 7PM.
Here's an update folks... the new iPhone 3G I was given as a replacement on Sunday, August 3rd to my original phone that had developed cracks in the casing has now itself started to crack... yes, that's right, I found a crack near the volume rocker switch today. I took it back to the original genius at the SF store and he pulled out another new one, it already had cracks right out of the box, he pulled out a 2nd, and a 3rd... both had cracks in different places... it wasn't until he pulled a 4th out that we found one with NO cracks. Now I'm home, its all set up and we'll see after the next couple days if this one develops cracks. This is a major major issue that I don't think too many people are aware about, simply because most of those still standing in lines to get the 3G iPhone don't watch macrumors.com or the discussions on here. Spread the word folks or nothing will be done about this.

Is this the white model that you had to get a 3rd, 4th box for?

week 30 white iPhone

I have a week 30 white iPhone...just saw a small crack on the bottom right side of the phone. Taking it in tomorrow to see what the geniuses say.

UPDATE:

went into Apple store (fashion valley-San Diego), went to genius bar for appointment, explained my situation with the iphone and the cracking. The girl who handled my case initially kept looking at the spots i told her for the cracks, with maginfine glass and everything, claimed to not see anything. she then went to the back to ask another tech if he could see nething. again they claimed nothing, it wasn't until she asked another genius next to her; he moved the phone around for the right lighting and angle and said he saw what i say (thank goodness). She kept saying she coudln't see it, and if it WAS there, it prolly wasn't a problem and not to worry. But i kept insisting, pushing for a replacement, until she finally went to the back (talk to manager), and then agreed to replace it. Got it replaced with brand new 8gig black iphone. crack free right now, but we'll see how long that stays.
my advice, if you have a black iphone with hairline cracks, be persistant, as they will prolly not see it at first, and if they do, they will do the whole "its no big deal" routine, and shy away from the whole replacement=solution idea. Also worth mentioning, of the three genius's i talked to there, none of them acknowledge knowing about this shell cracking issue, and claimed this was the first time they saw such a thing(doubtful). but in their defense, thats their job, to support apple product legitamcy first, then to help us second. lol. all good for now.

I talked with my good friend who works at a high volume apple store and he said that out of all the phones going through there he has seen the cracking but it's very rare considering the amount of phones. I tried showing him the thread to get his take on it and he said the questions that are asked are just there to determine trends. They read them off the screen because the team that investigates issues like that wants to know. He said if you chose a different category like 'won't turn on' that it would ask you where you charge it, store it, what kind of computer you use it on, etc. It sounds like they don't KNOW something we don't but ARE trying to find out if it's common or what the trends are.

I personally didn't see cracks on my first white 16gb, but the silence button did fall off :) It was swapped out a couple weeks ago and I still haven't found any cracks on my replacement so I'm really wondering what the common factor is with all these cracked ones and if mine will do it sooner or later also.

So far my experiences have been good and as long as the crack is visible in normal sunlight I have no doubts the geniuses would let me get it replaced so if some cracks start popping up and have to get it replaced I'll let you guys know the results.

This issue is NOT just happening to the white model, its also the black

I keep mine (16gb black) in a silicone case. I just took it out and looked at it closely, especially around the headphone jack and the corners. But so far all looks good (fingers crossed).

What I didn't know couldn't have hurt me... :-(

I didn't believe the story when I read it until I actually looked at my own.
Little did I know that there are little tiny cracks ALL OVER my dock connector.

Grrr. I just exchanged my old 3G for cracks, and at first, the new one looked great. When I got home and examined it in better light the next morning, I noticed that it has dents. These dents are not from dropping or hitting the phone against anything, in fact, they look like they are protruding out from the phone, so not really a dent I guess. They are hard to describe but look like bubbles/holes almost. There are 3 around the volume buttons and one larger one on the back. Guess I'm going back to the Apple store... Has anyone else had this issue?? I will post pictures as soon as my camera battery recharges.

Yep. Bubbles are quite common. They're not so bad if they're in a not so noticeable place like near the connector, but on the back of the phone would be very annoying.

For no apparent reason (cause I treat my 3G iPhone like its a baby kitten) my phones developed a crack near the dock connector.....needless to say Im not a happy bunny

Thankful

As of right now my 16GB 3G is not showing any cracks. I have had it since late afternoon on July 11th. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I hope everyone else's experience has been as good as mine so far - I hate it for those of you with cracks...

:apple:

Im taking my phone into an O2 or apple store to get it replaced. It was obviously defective when manufactured. If it isnt replaced Im seeking legal advice as in UK its not on selling something that is not fit for purpose. Little cracks tend to develop into big cracks then your phone falls to pieces!!
