If everything else is fine with it, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm on my 3rd iPhone now. I did an exchange last week because of cracking, and I must say, this new one is awful. No cracks or anything, but the screen sucks. It's completely washed out and yellow. I'm hoping it starts cracking soon, so I can get a different one.

I wish I would've kept my old one. It had like 50 cracks (25 or so being quite large), but it had a gorgeous screen and no light leaks.

Come on Apple!

50!? I kept my iPhone 3G naked but taken good care of it. However, it got 'head butted' occasionally.

Yeah, I don't know what happened. I babied mine like crazy too. Four days after I got it, a whole slew of cracks showed up on the side opposite the side with the volume/ringer switches. They were pretty big (almost the whole height of the phone). Then slowly more cracks appeared around the headphone jack, camera, and dock connector. All the usual places.

Hey guys, I know this might be a little off-topic, but I have a question.
Do I need a genius appointment to get my iPhone 3G replaced? The silent switch fell off. And I want to get my wall charger replaced(the recalled ones).

Yes. Make your appointment online, easier that way.

For the iPhone 3G supercompact USB charger, you don't have to make any appointment with the Mac Genius.

Might depend how busy they are. I know the store by me is always busy so you need an appointment for everything. I agree you might not need an appointment to get the adapter exchanged sine it is a recall.

When I exchanged my adapter, it wasn't even a Mac Genius that exchanged t for me... It was just a regular floor employee.

rather disappointed I discovered a crack, a pretty deep one you can feel at that near the headphone port.

I got it on Wednesday too. I'm not sure if it's worth returning since the screen is perfect on this one i.e. no dead pixels, and very nice color, not yellow, and there is zero backlight bleed which is awesome.

Do you think they'll document this case for me? And if the problem gets worse months from now, then I can get an exchange? I feel exchanging it for just one crack might not be worth it as the chances of getting a worse phone are high.

If I was you I would hold off. Just not worth the gamble. The cracks really don't affect anything on the phone as far as functioning properly. I would just get it documented and after a week you'll forget they exist. If they get worse(i.e. through the casing) you have a year to get it replaced. Believe me they bothered me at first, now I don't even notice them. And honestly I don't even care anymore. I have passed the OCD phase.:D

@Al2009: thanks, that was what I was thinking of doing. :) I agree, at the moment the gamble just isn't worth it.

All that aside, I really hope Apple does something for the next gen or switches to aluminium again. The plastic cracks, and misaligned gaskets in my opinion are just unacceptable from Apple a company which is known for its high quality.

I own 2 other macs, and a couple of iPods and never have such problems as I've had with this iPhone.

Well it happened...

After months of following this post, it finally happened - Cracks in my white iPhone that I had since July 11!!! One at the connecter port on the bottom and one by the ring switch at the top. I made a genius appointment, went in, and they replaced the iPhone no questions asked. I left feeling very pleased. This is what makes Apple "different"; their commitment to customer service. As I was wrapping things up, the genious said, "If you have any further problems just let us know."

just an update. Many more cracks have appeared near the dock connector.

I give up. i've not had this much problems ever with an Apple product. Going to get an exchange and sell the iPhone and get someone to take over my contract.

Let me get this straight. You phone has some cosmetic cracks but other than that your phone works just fine so your going to dump the iPhone and go to some other phone.

Now that's Cutting off the nose to spite the face.

nope, I'll also be saving tons of cash, which i'm going to put towards a macbook. They're not just cosmetic as these aren't hairline cracks but actual cracks which are deep and can be felt. If i'm going to be with this phone for 3 years, what's the condition going to be like then if they're already cracked in less than half a year? We have no option of Apple care here in Canada as well.

Ok, I had a crack by the ringer switch and the headphone jack. So I took my black 16GB iphone to exchange it out. Well, the new phone does not go to 3G!!! And the phone will sync to the computer whenever it feels like it or I force it to. So I guess, I’ll take this phone back and get another one.

Yesterday my phone just started going erratic, and the proximity sensor wasn't working(I gave up):( I bought the Bold. Guess I'll wait till the next Iphone comes out and they take the time to build a quality phone. BTW the Bold is awesome.:D Still not an Iphone though.

Maybe the iPhone was freaking out because you don't know how to spell it.
You could always just get a first generation I phone. It's sad that people have to revert to an older model because it's more reliable than the new one.

It won't stop me from getting the next one that comes out. BTW sorry about the spelling(Long Night).;)

I really hope Apple goes back to aluminum for the next iPhone.

Or at least offers a higher-end model made of Aluminum. New iPhone 3Gs look older than my first-gen iPhone, and that's not normal for Apple products. They scratch too easily, and they have these cracking issues. C'mon Apple.

Yeah. Like, um, machined from a solid block of aluminum. Yeah, that's the ticket! And it comes in it's own miniature manila inter-office envelope.

Folks, Aluminum is metal, and there are so many radios in the iPhone that you're not likely to see metal until someone comes out with a radio-transparent aluminum.

Where is Scotty when you need him?!?!

How about microperforations all along the back casing?
