Bought my white 3g on release day and have kept it in an incase slider and another case the whole time. After reading the post the other day I looked at the phone and noticed I had 2 cracks on the back and some cracking along the charging/sync port. Made an appointment with a genius yestereday and without question he replaced the iphone. In and out in under 15 minutes.

I read the thread at the beginning, and it is amazing that this thread is going strong, as one would think that Apple would have fixed the problem by now.

Bear in mind that some of the problems that are being reported now are happening to phones that were bought in the first month or so that the 3Gs were out so Apple may have changed the die thickness or the plastic blend since then. I guess we'll know the other way for sure if we start getting lots of complaints from the people who bought them for Christmas!

I recently found out that my 3 minor cracks are actually just small chips. This iPhone hasn't started cracking yet, but here's an interesting discovery... The first iPhone 3G I bought must have used thinner plastic because in the dark, I could turn it over and see shadows of the components from the LCD Backlight. However, my new iPhone that has a few small chips doesn't show any light through the back in the pitch dark... This could be a good test to see if you're using the thicker plastic.

Got my iphone replace cause of cracks. The way I look at it, I just get a new replacement every 3 months. :)

from what I remember when this thread started, the phones are just cracking on their own -- almost like a stress fracture.

i myself have not had any issues with my white 3G

i retract this: i just found a crack near the SIM tray... not good

i've been procrastinating taking my back because one .... its a long drive, and two.... i fear they wont replace it for whatever reason... but i will def post back here when i return it and if they take it back....

I bet they will replace it -- have no fear.

I'm tempted to run next door and switch it out today -- but I can't stand the mall.

but if it's only a one year waranty, doesnt that mean that they will replace it up until the waranty runs out? or does it renew everytime they take it back? (probably not ) LOL

Had mine replaced on Sunday at Apple store in Montreal. There were 2 persons in line before me at the genius bar and the both had there iPhone replaced! I wonder what is the defect rate of the iPhone 3G. Anyway, it's always good to have a refresh.

wtf my black iphone just got a small crack by the bottom connector

its not visible but there's some give now when i press the home button

I can't believe this thread bumps up atleast twice a week or more now, this is getting ridiculous if you ask me. Not the thread but the cracking issues. So many have had cracks but several of you have had multiple phones with cracks. It really makes me wonder if it's worth getting one at all, I mean, if I'm constantly going to be worried about if I'm gonna have to take my iphone back this week because of cracks...that's just....bullsh*t. Out of the 11 cell phones that I've owned in the past, not one has had to be taken back because of PLASTIC CRACKING. Now I did have one that was replaced in the past because I dropped it and I paid to have it replaced.

This thread really just blows my mind.

I have a 3G, treat it like any other phone, no putting a case on it, or extra care. Don't have a crack, or any other problem

Not every iPhone 3G cracks. Only 1 of mine cracked. I'm on my 4th right now. I have 3 very small chips in the plastic but, no cracks. I believe the chips were caused by me and they're very hard to see.

I'm going to visit the Mac Genius tomorrow regarding to the crack issue. Anything I need to know beforehand?

Yes, they are going to ask you how many iPhones have been sold, if you can't answer, no new iPhone for you my friend. So, get your Google on.

Just kidding man, you are good to go, just show him the crack and they will replace it

Thank you. Will also consider to invest on a Griffin Clarifi case as well.

Yea, we'll see you back here in a week asking how do you get a replacement.

Of course, I'm kidding, I hope yours stays perfect. ;)

i took my 3G out of its case the other day (I think it is probably the 3rd time i have taken it out of its case since i got it - day after release) to take some pictures of it and my other iPods and stuff, and noticed i tiny crack next to the silent switch.

nothing big or threatening but i would like an iPhone with no cracks on it (as anyone would, they do cost a lot).

going down to sydney on february 6 for Top Gear Live (yay!!! :D ) and hoping to visit the Apple Store there, as I havent seen it yet. Can they replace it on the spot (if they think they should) or do you have to call ahead?

Noticed a crack on the back of my black 8GB over the Christmas holidays. About 1/4" long, right on the corner, beside by the headphone socket.

It's under the surface, as you can't even feel it if you run a fingernail across it. Call me a sceptic, but I have had the handset since launch day, then this crack appears next the headphone socket the same week as the first time I ever plugged a set of headphones into it.

I'm not toooooo far from the local Apple store (Glasgow is about an hours travel away), but it's the thought of going to the bother of going, and then being told it was somehow my own doing and being sent away looking like a muppet.

It's really annoying me though, as it's been treated with the utmost of respect!

Cases causing cracking?

I have a theory, but it's probably lame. Seems like a lot of people who just put their iphone in their pocket have no issue, but those who buy cases have issues with the case scratching their phone, and probably cracking it too.

My bezel on my iphone 3g is completely scratched, almost like it's 2 years old, and i'm using the Incase plastic case (not the silicone one). In addition, my phone has developed several of these cracks mentioned in this thread.

I never had any cracks before when I just carried the phone around with an invisibleshield, but after getting the incase, suddenly i have cracks everywhere, by the headphone jack, vibrate switch, and dock port.

I could be way off, but maybe??

Got a crack too.

Got a black iphone in August, just noticed the crack near the silent switch.

never had it in a case and never been dropped.

Not too fussed about it really, just a little annoying

This is clearly not just isolated to people who have bought during or shortly after launch. Units sold in december and january also have this issue popping up. If this is so widespread, why isn't apple acknowledging the issue? Why is this not better known?
