5 Reasons not to get 3G ipad

1. 130 dollars is just too much.
2. AT&T network only
3. Data has been capped. Thanks
4. Verizon Ipad will be released. I think Verizon ipad will happen before Verizon iphone.
5. 4G network is around the corner. No reason to spend on 3G networks.

What do you all think?

Completely disagree.

1. The iPad is a frivolously expensive gadget so why not pay the little extra. Also £100 is well worth being able to use it anywhere rather than just at home or Starbucks and there are loads of great apps that use the GPS.
2. Its not locked so you can take a pair of scissors to any 3G SIM and stick it in.
4. ummm. possibly, but unlikely.
5. There will always be better tech round the corner so why buy anything?

3G ipad = Fail? NOT!!

Like the OP I had initially thought that the 3G was a bit of a waste and not at all worth it. I was interested in the GPS (as a geocacher it was an interesting thing). However, I planned on not getting the 3G.

Then in talking about it with my wife, we decided that as we are going on a 3 week summer vacation exploring parts of Canada that we have never been to and don't have any friends or family, may be we should splurge and go for the 3G.

It was invaluable during the vacation. The ability to find restaurants, look at menus on-line (my daughter has allergies, so finding appropriate food can sometimes be a challenge) view the websites about museums or attractions we were planning on going to. Look up information about something you see. Having a navigation system. It was worth the cost over and over again. Made our trip much more enjoyable. It really is the ideal thing to have when travelling.

YMMV, but for me it was worth the premium for that 3 week vacation and now it is all gravy. I haven't decided whether I will continue paying the monthly subscription, but with the gps, it is a bonus to have, and without any conttracts it is simple to order data plan when you need it.

On the problem of data capping, we used it extensively during our vacation and it was less than 2GB of bandwidth used. Without making a concerted effort, or at least being addicted to streaming video, I think it would be hard for me to exceed the 5G cap from Rogers, so I'm not worried about that.

But you get REAL GPS, not pseudo localisation through WiFi, and my experience with this technology has been pretty poor. Best of luck using a WiFi iPad to navigate in rural areas :D
2. AT&T network only
That's a local issue, not a global one. Perhaps you should get the ball rolling on legislation restricting these "exclusivity" contracts?
3. Data has been capped. Thanks
Again a local issue.
4. Verizon Ipad will be released. I think Verizon ipad will happen before Verizon iphone.
This point is flawed, unless you men "iPad 3G + AT&T = Fail".
5. 4G network is around the corner. No reason to spend on 3G networks.
Yeah, um, not so much. Have you looked at where 4G has been rolled out yet? We are talking about tiny tiny areas at the moment, so for the bulk of customers the added cost of having 4G technology in an iPad is not yet worthwhile and probably won't be for another 12-24 months, by which time many will have upgraded to a newer generation iPad that will have 4G capabilities.

For me, the added cost of the 3G iPad is worthwile because I have immediate access to a 3G network now, and the fact that it has real GPS makes it very attractive for when we travel. I am sure that many who paid the premium for a 3G iPad are very happy with their decision, so I think your statement/question is nothing but a gross generalisation based on personal bias. Sorry to be so blunt - no offence intended.

1. No
2. In the US, but there are other 3G networks outside the US
3. Yes
4. See three, how do you know they will not also have a cap?
5. 5G soon after that. By the time many will see 4G, the current iPad will be considered obsolete.

I think I don't give a F what your opinions are, troll.

(if you're not prepared for the answer, don't ask the question)

Stop being a hypocrite, you are the troll who has been insulting this user and have trolled my iPod touch thread.

This thread died in July of 2010 until you went and Zombie-d it up. Can this get a lock?

Elaborate..

You do know that zombies aren't real....right?

Yet you are converting the noun to a verb phrase?

By the way threads do not die, they are in existence until another user adds their own opinion to the matter. Unless the database is fully cleared or Planet Earth is eliminated, this thread lives whether you like it or not.

I had an iPad 1 Wifi only and that was the fail to me.

Now I have 3G iPad 2 and I can't live without it. Best purchase I ever made.

I love not worrying if I will have some wifi connection around or my jailbroken iPhone gets borked (which I unjailbroke after i got my 3G iPad) or something like that. Very much worth it to me

You joined in Sept 11th and are already bumping old threads for absolutely no reason.

(Take into consideration that I bookmark things I want to remember instead of keeping my entire history is the only reason I came back to this thread.)

Elaborate? Ok.

While I'm extremely glad that you were able to comfort me and reassure me that Zombies won't be getting me, and I'm also at ease knowing that you could tell the difference between a noun and a verb, something troubles me.

The fact that you took the time to elaborate the reasoning behind the nonexistence of Zombies, and the fact that you needed to coax my interest in the English language is enough in itself. Then you took it a step further, trying to back up your reasoning for adding a response to a thread where you just knew I had a great response that should have ended it.

In Internet-landia, we know this as the "Gotta-have-the-last-word" Syndrome. It's where people have this horrible, debilitating disease that causes them to spurt out lesser, useless responses to something that not only needed no response to begin with, but furthermore was elaborated on, when the original response was so senseless that not even I elaborated on it.

In the art of a great response, I won't self-proclaim this as the king, but somewhere, subliminally, you're thinking of a response - the likes of which we may or may not ever see. Many Kudos to you, if we do see your next thought posted below - for I, personally, am interested to see where you take us next. If we don't hear from you here again, well then my condolences, because I don't want to crush your enthusiasm in Internet replies. Rather, I'd like to lift your aspirations even higher, in the hopes we may see you again.

Somewhere, down the road, I hope we meet again. Your reply has resonated deeply within my soul, and I will cherish it forever. Knowing that I'm now safe from any approaching mythical Zombie-horde, I can sleep a little easier, thanks to your kind, guiding ways, and your all-knowing wisdom.

(Yes. If you were wondering, I was having a bad day. I think in that second to last paragraph, I felt better.)

Here in croatia ipads are sold unlocked and you just put in the microsim of the carrier you wish to use.

They're sold unlocked everywhere, including the US, but that's true for GSM only. Here in the US we also have Verizon, which is CDMA and has no SIM slot.

Touche.

Gotta admit, good response there, props to you.

I do agree with the OP, 3G iPad isn't needed, many people already have mobile phones that can surf the internet on the go. No point in paying the extra dollars per month if all you have to do is get home and surf the net on desktop.

And No I do not believe the hype that comes with surfing the internet on an iPad.
