not yet set ?

Nope. It is not actually.
Have a look at the bottom of this page: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/iphone/price_plan/packet/index.html
The stuff in red letters.

Sorry about Japanese but here is it, with the translation:

Translation:

So yes, SMS are not free..

was just looking at the iPhone pages at Softbank again. The SMS are free with certain plans

I see to have missed the post about where the 3G iPhone will be available this Friday. Can I get a link or some new information?

@Synaesthesia:

Thanks a lot for a very useful and informative post. It cleared up a lot of questions in my mind.

Much better than the misinformation, whining, and over-inflated opinions presented as fact by some of the other 'experts' in this thread.

Thanks, but having worked in the industry for many years, I think I have a fairly good grasp of what is happening here. ;)

No, really you don't.

You went on and on about the "ridiculous ETF" (your words) including in your previous comment before you were corrected, and have done little else except constantly moan and rant about things many of which have turned out to be misinformation. Synaesthesia kindly pointed out how things are, and suddenly to return to blowing smoke about how much you know.

Frankly I can't understand your problem with an ETF anyway. When you bought your previous phone YOU SIGNED IT. It was provided to you in black and white for you to read and agree to - you were perfectly at liberty to walk away at any time, but you chose not to. You were probably quite happy with it at the time because it meant you got a cheaper deal on the phone. But now suddenly something better comes along and you're whining about not being able to get out of a contract that YOU AGREED TO.

The "loophole" if you want to call it that

No, you called it that.
Oh yeah. He or she had no idea there would be an iPhone coming out while still on his old contract :D!

in the meanwhile..

i friend of mine was talking to Kurokawa Softbank shop's head today (I wrote about it earlier, just without names). This shop is in first 5 shops of pref. Aichi by sales numbers.

Accodring to the head of that shop, they will be getting "from 5 to 10 units" on 11th. All seem to go to "pre-orders" (which never existed officially, but still..). We both sort of "pre-ordered" iPhones at that shop (basically just got onto the phone list) but were told we won't be getting anything on 11th because of supply problems.

Next time when iPhone are planned to be re-stocked is July 25th. That time, bigger shops will get larger number of units, so we seem to have a chance to get our iPhones sooner than later.. hopefully.

I'll try my local Softbank shop on 11th though.. after calling them on 10th.

Ouch. Actually, when you first posted this rumor a few days ago I mentioned it to a Japanese buddy, and he told me this was not an uncommon tactic for Japanese retailers ... Kind of like the DS Lite and Wii ... On the other hand, rumor sites are reporting various Softbank stores' employees as saying that their particular locations would be well-stocked and more than able to deal with 'current interest.'

So, who knows. I'm number 20 on the pre-order list at the shop near my house, so we'll see how that goes. I will say this though: I'll be seriously P.O.'d if I can't buy the iPhone on Friday due to Softbank's mishandling of the entire affair.

Well I really hope so. My local Softbank store again confirmed that "we know nothing" today. Either they really don't know or they're just playing fool...

What are these rumor sites btw? Any links? Would be cool to find a well-stocked Softbank shop in Nagoya area....

1) Your ETF is 0 yen. What you claim is your ETF (43000 yen, going down by 30 a month) is actually the remaining Bunkatsubarai (monthly payments) on the cost of your previous phone.
Thanks for your informative post.

Regarding the above, I was here when cell phones first came out. You had to pay for your phone up front. At the time they did not have the option of spreading out the cost over time.

If it was still that way, I am sure there would be no confusion.

Anyhow, personally, I am not concerned about the upfront fees, but rather the monthly costs for how I would use the phone.

Given what I have wrote about stock availability of iPhones on the launch date (see this thread), it would be sort of a miracle if you manage to buy any model at all :)
Said, that, I personally going to call local Softbank shop on 10th evening and ask if they have any iPhones in stock (if they don't, chances are they won't get anything by 11th morning). IF they do have iPhones in stock, I'll ask if they have 16Gb ones, and IF they do have ones, I'm going to confirm there are STILL no pre-order/waiting lists, and IF there is no such things, I'll ask them if I'll queue on 11th morning and be the first in line, then I'll get an iPhone or not? (if the answer is "no" - it will mean shop staff will get iPhones for themselves) :)

IF everything's fine by that time, I'm going to wake up reeeeally early and park my car right in front of Softbank shop and wait for the shop to open. And once it opens, I'm going to get my 16Gb iPhone :)

Now, having a look at all the IFs, chances are pretty slim, but hopefully non-zero :D

I talked to my local shop yesterday, where I'd made a reservation months ago... but after the agent had a look at the list, I was told my chances of getting one on Friday were slim to none. Said they were only getting 8 in the first shipment! (Apparently I was like #15 on the list.) I reserved at another place, but it was much later, so I don't hold much hope for that one... Guess I'll just have to wait until the second batch come around.:(
It's going to cost me 10,000 to cancel my current contract, but since I'm on an old Vodafone-era plan, starting anew with the White Plan should just about offset any losses in benefits... I hardly ever actually talk on the phone, anyway. I'm going to be using this mainly for on-the-go internet access and email.

My inside contact in Softbank claims there's nothing she can do, that even employees aren't getting their discount on this one. (My BS detector beginning to click furiously... )

Softbank opening time on the 11th?

Does anyone know what time the Softbank shops open on the 11th?

I believe its usually 10 but I wonder if they'll open earlier?

Is anyone going to queue up at the softbanks?

P.

Most Softbank shops open at 10. However, Omotesando shop in Tokyo will start selling iPhones starting from 7am on 11th (MNP contracts will handled starting 9am).

As for the rest of Softbank shops, Softbank stated that iPhones will go on sale starting 12:00 (noon) on 11th. So even if a particular shop opens at 10, you won't be getting iPhone until 2 hours after that, at the earliest.

I'd like to queue myself, but somehow I feel this will be an exercise in futility :) If you want to queue at Omotesando shop, I might suggest you getting 2 days-off and queue starting NOW :D There were over 20 people in queue there, YESTERDAY :)

Well, some good news here (for a change) ...

I just stopped by the shop down the street (where I have my reservation from June 13th) and spoke with the manager. He said that some people on the list had backed out and that as a result, I am now in the top 10 on the waiting list. He also said that his shop would be receiving 10 iPhones but possibly more - it sounded like 10 confirmed with the possibility of one or two extras. He said that his shop was one of the only ones which had accepted (and not subsequently canceled) pre-orders and that as a result, I would be getting an iPhone on Friday!!

He must've shaken my hand at least three times, and I reassured him that once I purchase the iPhone, I will take up any support issues with either Apple or another shop - IOW, I'll be out of their hair!! ;) I think they're anxious to get an iPhone in my hands because, quite frankly, I don't think they're too thrilled about having to deal with me (the language barrier, the fact that I don't have a problem expressing my opinion, not to mention that I'm a fairly big guy with a beard and sunglasses - I get the feeling they're kind of afraid of me and of what my reaction will be if they turn me down) ... hehe ... I guess that works out to my advantage in this case.

Anyway, I'm SO relieved. The manager told me that as long as they actually receive at least one 16GB model (of the ten iPhones they'll get, they don't yet know the 8GB/16GB mix) I will definitely have an iPhone at 12pm on Friday! FINALLY!!!!!!!

The shop near me is opening at 11am (as usual) but will begin selling the iPhone at 12pm. I don't know why they're delaying it, but it works out for me as I will be working in the morning and will arrive at the shop just in time for iPhone sales. Yay.

kuma?

Hi Mave,
Are all softbank shops opening at 11 I wonder?
I "thought" my local was opening at 10...

Beard n glasses? I thought that with a name like Mavis....

Thanks for the info sir.
I'll be calling my local SS tomorrow and see what's happening.

I really dont want to be there queueing from 9 or earlier if they dont start
selling them until 12 but what choice will I have if there are people waiting?

(

Two of the shops by my nearest station open at 10am, but I stopped by one yesterday and they said 12pm was the magic hour. YMMV.

Oh, and my username? Just paying homage to my favorite band in college, the now-defunct Mavis Piggott. Been using that name for many, many years. ;)

Will have to call you the bearded lady of MacWombers!;)

I just got a phone call from my local Softbank shop asking for confirmation of the model and color I want (16GB, black), and it sounds like I MIGHT actually get one, too!:D

That's killer, mate! Let us know how it goes! :D

Just got back from my local store. They're in the dark about supply issues but from the sound of it, they don't expect very many. Also, the guy handed me a directory of all the Softbank shops and suggested that I might have to go way out to some Gifu or other inaka to have a chance at getting one. I live in the middle of Nagoya, btw.

Oh a fellow Nagoyan! :)
Searching inaka areas is indeed a good idea!
Could you post here or PM me if you find some supplies of iPhones in some near-Nagoya inaka area? I might as well join you in a quest for the iPhone...

I just watched one of the big morning TV news shows here do an entire segment on tomorrow's launch including long lines already formed at the Omotesando Tokyo Store. It looked more like a 15 minute advertisement with everyone fawning over it. They had a 1st gen iPhone in the studio they were playing with to demonstrate. That sort of thing can't be good for those hoping the iPhone 3G launch will fly under the radar with most Japanese. Apple must be loving it though.

I agree with those who recommend heading out into the "inaka" to get a better chance at scoring an iPhone on or near launch day. When I was in the local shop here in Takamatsu, Kagawa the other day and asked they said they had not received any requests for pre-orders, not that they'd do them anyway.

I've decided that I am going to seriously consider going with the iPhone 3G for my next handset when my current contract ends in January '09. By then I sure hope supply issues are resolved and also any early bugs should be worked out.

Best of luck to all of you who hope to get one tomorrow and I'm looking forward to reading your reviews. :D
