I know I'm digging up a fairly old thread here, but was searching for people talking about ichat/messenger possibilities for the iPhone and am surprised so many think that you can't chat with msn people on iChat, because you can, I've been doing it for quite some time. Could well not work with any iPhone apps of course, but works perfectly for on a mac.
Just use a jabber account (which iChat supports), with Jabber you can add other accounts, i.e. msn ones. You just need to set it up on the third party website. Just google "ichat msn" and you'll get tons of websites explaining how to do it!
(note: you only get text, no videos etc, not sure about file transfer, but I think not)

surely an ichat without video is defeating the main purpose of ichat?

besides... iPhone 3G dusnt feature a front camera so iChat possibilities have been ruled out

yeah but, we might just have ichat mobile.. ? I was thinking it might be an APP that you have to pay for... =/ I would really like to see Apple outshine Danger and Sidekicks with their aim, and give us some type of messenger like they have on Sidekicks...

I've only tried iChat whilst with video once. I mainly use it for normal chat like any other IM. It did start as that after all and it wasn't pointless then!
I only know one other person with a mac who I'd want to chat wih and they only live 20 mins walk from me!

I know that the new Trillian will support the iPhone, and it supports AIM, MSN, Y!, GTalk, and Jabber protocols. So, with the exception of .Mac (and it may be Jabber too, I'm not honestly sure), through it, all are supported.

Bumping this because I still don't understand why Apple hasn't released an iChat application for the iPhone 3G. The AIM application obviously is terrible and crashes all the time, and since going "online" and chatting with your friends is so popular now I don't see how being able to have a "computer" with you all the time so that you can always check your buddy list and chat with your friends isn't a top priority for apps for the iPhone.
