I don't know about you, but my iPhone 3G seems to lag so much on 3.0. I miss the days of 2.2.1 where everything was pretty speedy.

Also, 2.2.1 had a better UI and it just worked really well. So well in fact, there was almost nothing to complain about. The UI seemed to move smoother too.

Anyone think Apple just optimized 3.0 for the 3GS?

I mean, the iPhone 3GS has updated UI elements and the 3G still uses the old ones... even 3.1 on the 3G still uses the old UI elements. Here's an example below:

This is 2.2.1 and 3.0 on iPhone 3G

This is 3.0 on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS: Pay attention to the change on the right side of the "Directions" button to see the difference. It's still the same in 3.1 by the way. The image with the blue location button is the 3GS.

I would say that Apple stopped caring about the iPhone 3G and only cares about their newest iPhone.

the crisper rendering of the button of the 3GS couldnt possible be because it has a better graphics processor, cpu, and more memory

no, apple purposley gave the 3GS users a better looking button. Its to make people want to upgrade. They're holding out on us
/sarcasm

although you may be right that Apple is more focused on the 3GS than the 3G (probably true, after all, its a new product, so they need to get back the money they put into developing it, so why shouldn't the focus on it?)

but I think a more valid way to make your point could be that they didn't give you, say, voice controls, even though they could have. But using a nearly unrecognizable difference in the maps app? Not the best choice

3.0 has been fine for me, it is not that much slower than 2.2.1 on my 3G. Although 3.0 did break a few games, but they've been fixed now.

The better GPU has nothing to do with raster artwork. The 3GS clearly has a different UI than the 3G. The UI on the iPhone 3G is a bug, but they fixed it for the iPhone 3GS. Why would they not try to make them at least *look* consistent? It doesn't make any sense. Do you *really* think that Apple is counting on people to upgrade because of a graphical glitch... no, but it's something that they still need to fix regardless.

You just get better and better. Right when I think you can't get any more anal...BOOM! There it is. Keep it coming, Spaz. We all like a good show.

How the heck did you notice these things? Did you really just sit there taking screenshots and comparing for hours? Are these really that big of a deal? Honestly I never noticed any of these things and still don't notice them. You have way to much time on your hands.

you really think someone sat there and made a new button for maps, then bundled it in with only the 3GS software?
why pay the guy to do it in the first place then?

there has to be another explanation

and the 3GS doesn't "clearly have a different UI"
a different UI would be like switching over to something that looked more like the palm pre, not slightly darkening the outline on one of the buttons in maps, or shifting it over 1px

3.0 FTW. Get over your OCD
Speaks the truth.

Your OCD is incredibly annoying, Spaz. Please make an interesting post. It's all "this sucks because 1px is to the left. Oh my god."

Deal with it. It's a faster more responsive OS in my opinion. Please, please stop making these topics where you complain about puerile nonsense.

Oh, I see the directions thing now after looking close. Wow, that's almost comical that it frustrates you. It's like four un-anti-aliased pixels. xD

Come on man, stop complaining over this trivial junk. It's not worth the read.

I think you're mixing apple and oranges. You should compare 2.0 to 3.0 because the 2.2.1 has all of the refinements to 2.0. I think 3.0 is better then the prior version and apple will be updating the OS to fix the bugs/issues. Overall the design and features of 3.0 is much better then 2.2.1 and its only going to get better

I see the difference between 2.2.1 and 3.0, but I really don't see the difference between 3.0 on the 3GS and the 3G?

My 3G was much slower with 3.0 than 2.2.1 but i found the features to be worth it. Want to fix that problem? Do what i did.. upgrade to the 3GS. Much faster!

It's a bug that only YOU seem to care about. And I think it further illustrates that you are inappropriately obsessed with a piece of hardware.

Seriously, get over it.

my phone defiantly feels more sluggish, almost like its needs more RAM. Hmm... I wonder if Apple did that on purpose to make me want to buy the new iPhone which sports a quicker processor.....:p

Wow, I never even realized about that until you posted the comparison of the images side by side (err..)

I'm actually satisfied with 3.0, heck I've been waiting for this update because of the new features added (which are over 100+ according to the sticky above)

At first I was wondering what the hell he was talking about, and thought he was mentioning the shift of the buttons in 2.2.1 over 1 pixel in 3.0, not being able to see the difference between 3.0 on a 3G and a 3GS.

But I see it now. It's the vertical line of pixels on the "Directions" button on the right. It's like a tad different.

Who the hell cares. I mean, who's to say that 3.0 is what was intended, and everything else is wrong?

It's not enough to bug me of a bad 3.0 (though really, shouldn't you be comparing 3.0 with 2.0?). I still have reservations of 3.0, since I now frequently get ALOD, and there's a lag shifting between apps, but it's not annoying enough to overshadow the neat software enhancements.

I just downgraded to 2.2.1 and boy am I glad I did. Everything is super snappy and overall just better. All the apps launch fast (only a split second behind the 3GS) and the animations are even smoother. There's no doubt in my mind that 3.0 was optimized for the 3GS and not so much for the 3G. 2.2.1 was built for the 3G.

Don't you have a 3GS?

3.0 seems slower but i don't have any benchmarks to prove it.

it definitely brought a lot of regressions over 2.2.1 but it is worth it for the clipboard functionality.
