Speed test puts my iPhone 3G at 1.79Mbps in Tallahassee, FL (state capital)

Buddy of mine was flying through Tampa yesterday and said he was getting pretty strong results there too... I dunno, maybe AT&T beefed up their 3g service in Florida for all the retirees with their iPhones... ;)

All I know is that I can't get a decent signal to save my life in Chicago...

Same here. I got 500kbps this morning but I'm back to about 200 now. What was edge coming in at?

Alright, this is getting stupid. Testes on both testmyiphone.com and inetworktest.com. Gettings 200kbps on edge and 100kbps on 3g with 5 3G bars. Can anyone living in the seekonk/Providence area test their 3g speeds on their iphone and compare?

Using my works network (wifi), and fido (3g/edge) here in Ottawa, Canada.

WIFI = 3.48Mbps, 3483kbps, 425kb/s
3G = 1.32Mbps, 1320kbps, 161kb/s
EDGE = 0.14Mbps, 138kbps, 17kb/s

for the past few days my speeds were terrible, but today in the same locations its blazing fast... by the way im in NY

+1 for crappy Los Angeles 3g

on edge, i get 5 bars, my speed on edge is 147, on 3g, I get 3 bars at MOST! and my 3g speed is 256. I am also not really one to complain, but something is wrong with either the 3g iphone, or AT&T 3g network right now, and they need to fix it stat!

Same for me in Norfolk, VA. Edge speed averaged around 150kbps and now with 3G ( 5 bars) my average is around 250kbps.

I'm getting the " We think your on edge " message too.

One of the main reasons for me to upgrade were increased speeds. Kinda disapointed. Hopefully they'll pick this up in the near future. Or they better start dropping their Data fee rates.

Very slow in Houston

I have horrible speeds in downtown houston.

Reading the apple discussion group - there's a thread with about 100 posts about how bad 3g is running all over, dropping calls and all. And weird things like I go from 4 bars to 1 to Edge sitting at the same spot in the middle of houston.

Nice that I get to pay $10 extra a month of that...

I'm in downtown Houston as well and my speeds are terrible. The best I've gotten is 450 kbp/s and dipping as low as 100 kbp/s. All this with 4 bars.

I live and work in San Francisco and have been getting horrible speeds (never more than 249 kbps) on 3G...so much so that I just gave up and returned the damn thing today. The manager in the AT&T store pulled out his first-gen iPhone and, side-by-side with my 3G, we loaded car.com. The 3G beat his (unlocked, haha) first gen, loading the site in about 18 seconds, his first-gen took about 21 seconds. That's not twice as fast, and not worth the extra $10/month, and not worth being locked into for two years when you just know that Apple's going to release a worthwhile upgrade by MWSF, if not sooner.

I'm now happily back on my scratch-proof first-gen iPhone, waiting until AT&T gets their act together, and Apple releases the 32 GB product red iPhone 3G.

found a better test site dslreports.com/mspeed try this one out now

as for my results got 190 Kbps in Anaheim ca and 485 Kbps in chula vista, san diego ca and now I'm off to try los angeles

I've been using my 3G in lower Manhattan since Friday and it's seems as slow or slower than Edge. Very disappointing. Results on Testmyiphone.com never go above 100kbps for me. Maybe it's the tall buildings everywhere, but even in midtown where I bought the phone it seemed super slow. What in the hell ATT/Apple?

absolutely true...there have been many issues and threads regarding slow 3G...NYC 3G sucks!:mad:

this is disappointing. In new york city, i was getting 120 kbps in edge. With 3g i am consistently getting below 100kbps.. i got 356 kbps few times. What a disappointment. I am about to switch of 3G, cuz its doing nothing but consuming more battery.

Has things improved for anyone?

Up at my school, I am starting to get 500-600 on a regular basis which is nice! Before I was stuck in the low 200s (at Edge speeds). I think the network may have gotten overwhelmed, I don't know.

Called ATT about problem

I called ATT the other day and made my way to a technology/network guy to seek advice. He reset my settings on the network and immediately my speeds increased. He said that the old settings might have restricted my new 3G phone to only use Edge speeds. Anyway, I told him lots of others in the NYC area were experiencing the same problem and he said he would raise the issue with the higher ups to see if he could get a reset on all the new 3G phones. Anyway, if you're still having problems you may want to call and see if they can reset your network settings from their side.

Up in Newport News mine seems pretty good since launch day. Just did testmyiphone.com and got around 1350kbps. 5 bars 3G btw at my place so no signal problems.

Nice speeds here in Britain

I'm in Dorset, UK on the 3 network and am getting speeds of well over 1 MB/s on 3G, this sometimes dips down to around 900 KB/s. But still fast.

EDGE speeds are slower - 150 KB/s

GPRS speeds are incredibly slow because so many people in my area use the GPRS network. At peak times it can reach down to 18 KB/s, I have never seen it faster than 42 KB/s.

I visited St. Louis on business and was surprised how slow the 3G (And especially EDGE) Speeds were. Data usage in the US is higher than Britain but I still think that the USA networks are pretty poor quality to be honest. I had never heard of a 'Dropped call' before I went to the US, I have never had the message 'Network Busy' when I try and make a call until I went to the US. Me thinks you should get your act together! ;)
