3G sucks. What a joke.

aka ur area doesn't have good 3G coverage which you should have found out soo there was no reason for you to go with the 3G aside from the fact that you didn't have the first iPhone or you wanted GPS lol

Um "good 3G coverage" was guaranteed by AT&T since their coverage map indicated solid blue all through the area. That and other 3G devices work just fine but the iphone simply doesn't. Are you 10? Did your Daddy by you your iphone? Time for bed.
Just a note - the 3G speed is perfectly FINE over here in Spain.
And since the iPhone 3G we have here is the same you have over there in the US, I would guess the fault is at AT&T crappy network.
I would advise you to complain to AT&T instead of blaming the iPhone.
Plus don't forget the US is not alone anymore in the iPhone arena.. if it works just fine pretty much everywhere else.. what does that tell you?

It bugs me when people take a single experience and extrapolate that to be universal. It's too bad you've had such problems, but really, does that mean that the entire product is horrible?

No, solid blue does NOT mean excellent coverage. It means you're in an approximate coverage area. AT&T does not have contours with service grading at this time for 3G coverage, only EDGE service.
It sucks that you've had so many problems, have you tried getting the iPhone replaced? Not everyone is having these problems, so you should ask for a replacement.
My 3g performance is just horrible. I have to turn it off to use the phone most of the time. My wife's iphone works noticeably better. Side by side, her phone works, mine doesn't. Two of the four other people I know personally who have 3g iphones have crappy 3g performance.
Every single person that goes on MR is a fanboy including me and including you so ya the iPhone isn't perfect but it's still one of the best phones on the market.

According to the 3G coverage map, (NW Philadelphia suburbs) there should be nowhere within 20 miles of my home that I can't get 3G. The best I've seen is about 2 bars, and at my home, I get No Service. So just maybe, AT&T could make their map a little less disingenuous... but hey, you're the expert on everyone's situation, so maybe I'm just crazy.

It really sucks that this is happening to you, but dont go saying that the iPhone 3G is a crappy product. You just happened to get a bad one. It sucks, but simply go and get it replaced.
As for your problems updating the old iPhone with the 2.0, call Apple. They should be able to help you more than any of us here.

Mine works as advertised. Did you ever stop to think that not 100% of the products that come off an assembly line are going to be perfect and that maybe you should exchange it?
'Kinks' my a**. I'm on my 3rd 3G. It sucks and DOES NOT work as advertised. I would expect this from Microsoft, but not Apple.

We got 3G coverage here 2 weeks ago (at most) and our coverage and speed is working GREAT. I tested it online and it was a little less than half the speed of my wireless from the router... so I'd say it's a region problem or a personal problem for you... but since others have it I would say it's all just regional problems.

Dude updated his girlfriends iPhone 3 times and "supposedly" messed up 3 times. What are the odds on that? I would like to know what his process was.
Also, why didn't he exchange his iPhone for a different one just to make sure it was the phone and not something else? No, what he does is comes on to these forums and b*tch. C'mon at least do some basic troubleshooting before ranting about an entire product line.

I would say it's regional (especially in big cities with lots of tall buildings). 3G is great in Colorado Springs where there is lots of open space. Even Edge is surprisingly quick.
