I was looking on ebay today and there seemed to be quite a few 3G's going for well over $100. What am I missing? Why are these going for so much? Not that I'm complaining...

Wow... I didn't even check because I thought it would be pointless given the 3GS will be free with contract. I might actually give it a try.

I'm going 2G > 3GS > 4S and I'm happy about it.

I, too, was disappointed a bit at first. I wanted a bigger screen for my aging eyes, but really the 4S gave me everything I was expecting except for that. It's a significant upgrade over even the 4, let alone the 3G(S). It also has the added benefit that there are many accessories that work for it, which a new shape would not.

Bring on the 4S!

I'm in the same boat as all the 3G folks here. Glad to know there are still so many!

I want to upgrade to the 4S, but may have to go with the 4. I'm running SL 10.6.7 and have a MobileMe account - not iCloud. I can't upgrade to Lion (3rd party software issues), so I don't know if I should stick to the 4 to avoid the issues sure to come up with no Lion/iCloud. Am I being crazy - or an idiot? Sorry to derail things...

I'd say that if you can afford it, go for the 4S over the 4. For another $100 (which is certainly not nothing) you get a significantly faster device, a significantly better camera, twice the memory (8GB to 16GB) which you will likely find you want, Siri, a likely better antenna, and your device will have a longer lifespan against OS updates (hardware always chasing software).

Finally I can upgrade my 3GS, not that I don't like the 3GS, for m it is a major upgrade coming from 3GS. Put the order in today with my corporate account manager (AT&T), not sure if he can place the order now or have to wait on Friday. Since its a corporate account hopefully they can expedite the order (also they waive the upgrade fee), can't wait.

I can easily see why this is going for that much, and possibly the 3GS as well.

If the 3GS has not been updated to IOS4, you're looking at an easily jailbroken and unlocked iPhone that cou can sell. Granted if you have the money to spend on an unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4, it doesn't matter.. but for one that is cheap and able to be used on any GSM network, this is a good phone to have. So they are holding some resale value.. better than most would think..

I'm a maybe. I still like the form factor of the my 3G, and am unusually attracted to my cloth black pinstriped *Speck cover.

I can't/won't upgrade to Lion due to various hardware and software needs that will never be Lion compatible. So if iCloud is compatible with 10.6.X, I'll go with the 4S. If not, I won't. Getting the iPad when it first came out postponed my iPhone upgrade desires, and now, even though it is horribly slow, it works fine for what I use it for. Mostly, I'd upgrade to get tethering.

I don't have any macs, but why would the mac operating system influence your decision to get an iphone?

With Snow Leopard and Mobile Me, I can transparently share the Contacts and Calendar among our three Macs, my iPad, and three iPhones. I change an address or add an appointment on any device and it is on all of them.

If I get an iPhone 4S it will come with iOS 5 and iCloud. Snow Leopard does not support iCloud, so I will not be able to sync Contacts or Calendar on the new iPhone 4S with any other device, and I will have to manually enter all of my addresses, appointments, etc., because I do not want to convert my Mobile Me account over to iCloud.

Instead, I'll keep my current iPhone 3G until MobileMe is closed next June, and then find an alternate method to sync, not sync any more, or move to a phone that does sync. One daughter has Windows Phone 7, and while nowhere near iOS, it is a very nice mobile operating system. Rumors of a Mac sync may lead me down that path. After 12 years of usingiTools/Dot.Mac/MobileMe (and even e-World before that), it would be ironic if Apple's iCloud didn't work with my Mac, but a Windows phone did...

My GF is going from my old original iPhone (her blackberry died two months ago) to the 4S. Should blow her hair back!
Wonder if an original iPhone is worth anything?

Ordered this morning. It's official, 3G-4S (white!)

Well, we ended up replacing my black 16 GB 3G and my wife's white 16 GB 3GS with a black and a white 16 GB 4S. I've been assured that I can use Mobile Me on the new phone, so I'll be good until June. Then I'll have to go to Google for syncing if there's no solution for iCloud on Snow Leopard by then.

I passed on the last two phones as well. My 3G is now over 3 years old and performance is really slipping. The battery is really poor at this point and it locks up quite often. I'm really excited for the 4s and all of the new features. I plan to have the 4s and Ipad 2 for several years as well and then will jump to the latest and greatest at that time.

Does anyone know if the 4s and 3g have compatible docking (i.e. for clocks and Apple docks) units or will my 3rd party supplies be obsolete?

Does anyone's 3G have massive home button issues? Like, you can press it 100 times and it still won't wake up or exit an app?

Mine's unresponsive - not as bad as yours by the sound of it, but takes a few presses or a long, hard press at times! Sometimes it won't respond at all and needs a restart.

I bought the first iPhone then upgraded to 3G, but since then I've been patient. Now's the time for me to upgrade, as in addition to the above problem I'm tired of the general lag, the battery is on its last legs, I'm getting random re-boots occasionally etc. So, I've ordered a 64gb black 4S this morning - looking forward to it. :D

Sometimes I'll press home button and it will act as a double click too. I think it might have something to do with ios4. Oh well, next Friday, I won't care anymore =)

I have a similar issue, I thought it might just be that the phone is getting on a bit and the home button itself is dodgy, as if I press it in a certain way it usually works, whereas a normal press doesn't often register :/

I have a Vers speaker/dock that I got 3 years ago with my 3G. My wife's 3GS will not charge on it, but it will play music through it. I don't really use it for charging anyway, but that would suck to have to get a new dock as well.

My wife and I are going to upgrade from a 3g to the 4s but not for a few weeks. We've only had our 3g's since last December (our first Iphones and we bought them used). 3 out of the 4 phones on our plan are eligible for upgrades, but we will only be upgrading mine and hers. I can not wait to get it. :D
