I see the upgrade very worthwhile since now it has a compass app. I am on my motorcycle and WILL NOT carry around a GPS so the iPhone 3G S will be perfect.

You do realize that the GPS and compass have very little to do with each other. Many GPS systems do not have a compass, nor do they need it.

Well now he has both, and the two are tied together in Maps.

I'm saying, now it tells me the direction I am heading in so I can't get lost. It's a just in case feature that's actually pretty convenient for me.

people who have the 3g think its not worth it and you can't change most of those opinions. Its the same looking phone that has compass and video. honestly the speed isn't a big deal since how much faster can an app open seriously .5 seconds faster is not worth 500 dollars.

Maps already knows which way you're going based on your movement.

And if you're not moving....look at a street sign.

God forbid anyone ever make anything more convienant and easier to use

Maps now gives you a POV indicator and can orient the map to whatever direction you are actually facing in real time. Thats a good tying together of the compass and gps.

Care to tell me how you will look at street signs when your hiking or something like that?

Make It Really Fast

I guess I don't care how they make it faster, just that it is really faster running the OS, and of course eventually on the wireless network. Maybe Apple should have gone retro and put an ethernet jack in the thing ;)

What maps are you going to follow while hiking? Unless you mean trails, which should be a small path right in front of you. I don't know of many GPS services that offer directions on trails. But I guess it could be an additional app, rather difficult to obtain trails of every hiking area though.

But yes, generally if you're that lost a compass is a good bet. Then again, if you're that far out and you need something like that you'll probably be out of service range and likely out of battery. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it would be better to take a real compass than an electronic one that could die out on you.

Its one of those rather small things that are novel more than anything. Not a reason why its "very different".

Upgrade

I have an iPhone 3G and the upgrade to the 3G S is worth it for me, the better camera, video, larger storage, and more speed. This is totally worth it, and who is paying $ 500, sure I paid that much but once I sell my 3G it won't actually be $ 500.

European networks maybe?? There is a world outside of the US ;)

Yup, and then there's the market which created and is driving the iPhone. The good ol' US of A. Why do you think European and American cars are so different?

Probably could have saved Apple a pretty penny by not implementing this.

Don't get me wrong I'm going to upgrade - seeing how my first gen headphone jack is totally busted. But its a little disappointing after a year to really only get a faster 3G.

It's not only the 3G that's faster. While it isn't official, Apple has bumped the up the RAM and CPU. Are you telling me that apps open 3x faster because of the enhanced 3G? It's definitely a CPU and RAM bump, as well as the faster 3G.

I'm actually partly glad they didn't change the physical design. A new look would have been cool, but at least I don't have to buy another dock and case. And I finally get the full use of the remote in my $79 Apple headphones.

I am THRILLED about the fine-tuning of GPS: the map orientation thingy.
I have depended on the GPS many times and have had to turn the iphone so it was in the same direction that I needed to go.

This is great.

This is how bad rumors get started.

From the apple presentation, it would seem so. But let's all just wait and see how this thing performs in real life. I'm sure it's faster, but if it's like Q9550 vs. Core i7 920, then I'll say no thanks.

Do you really need someone else to notice you have the 3GS-- If you wont buy the 3GS b/c it looks the same then you must only be buying it to look cool. Its like when an 80 yr old millionaire buys a Bugatti Veyron but never goes over 70MPH. It is only you that really needs to no that you have a faster and updated phone. Do you also want Apple to make the 2.53GHz and 3.06Ghz MBP diff too so everyone knows you have a faster processor or RAM or Larger HDD. Or every update to the MBP they have to look diff so you can impress your friends
