Must say, if the tablet DOESN'T have this screen, it can't be a success for revitalizing the print industry. I have a Kindle, I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro... when it comes to reading, the Kindle wins in every possible way. If the Tablet is able to switch between a color eInk and a display that can still show video.... Damn that Tablet would REALLY be the coolest device around. I always said the Kindle would be a knockout success if it was color and had a touch screen.

what's the DPI of this display?

one of the main advantages of digital paper for a quality reading experience is the high resolution...

205 dpi according to the Techland.com article.

The current color readers mentioned above are VERY expensive. This seems to be pointed toward a more general public.

I liked the part in the video where she says the display would work fine as a Wacom enabled display..

If Apple's tablet has this sort of screen, Wacom-like stylus support and multitouch (like the new bamboo tablets).. I'll need one! I'd sell my MBP for one even.

I would really need to see the screen. So far what I've seen of screens that reflect regular sunlight without much use of a backlight they are week and dingy.

In all honesty I doubt Apple would use one of these screens in their tablet. Maybe once the technology can keep the beauty of a glass LCD LED screen.

Jimmy, I had a Compaq PDA years ago, the first one that they made and it had a transreflective screen and it was stunning! In fact the more sun light the better it displayed. It's colors were simply awesome!

Just some food for thought. ;)

promising but no mention of "touch screen" though.

Not sure if it would be ready by Q1 2010.

Wrong. Very capable of touch screen technology. She says it in the video.

Also guys you should check out 9to5mac, they have some very interesting things to add to this story. Seems Apple and Pixel Qi have had more than just "anecdotal ties." And down the rabbit hole we all go...

MacRumors today reports that Pixel Qi's screens would make a great match for the rumored Apple tablet. Indeed, 10.1 inches and the ability to display eInk-like text in full sunlight as well as full color video -- and at the same time using a fraction of the energy could make Apple's tablet a real "game changer". This isn't the first time the two companies have been seen together, however. Many reports from 2008 and this year have wondered the same question: Are apple and Pixel Qi working together on the Tablet?

Beyond the questions and the obvious excitement at the technology - which would seem to be a perfect fit, we've found some very interesting additional connections between Apple and Pixel Qi that aren't as anecdotal.

Pixel Qi's VP of Engineering is a November 2008 transfer from Apple. What did he work on? He "engineered new generation display electronics for the iPhone and other devices". His official title was Principal Driver Architect - Displays at Apple Inc. This is a huge connection. It is hard to imagine a person as tapped into Apple's tablet plans as this guy.

Dr. Carlin Vieri - VP of Engineering
Carlin Vieri joined Pixel Qi from Apple Computer where he engineered new generation display electronics for the iPhone and other devices. Previously he pioneered liquid crystal on silicon electronics backplanes, drive schemes and interfaces with the MicroDisplay Corporation...

Pixel Qi is currently building a display for a multi-touch tablet. Which tablet? We're not sure, but here's what they say:

"Our first production batch of screens will be ready shortly. We will be ramping production scale over Q1 2010. We can now announce that the first units are going into specialized tablet devices with multi-touch. Increasingly these screens will be super-slim, but some customers prefer the standard thickness."

Also, the Pixel Qi displays were originally due in Q3 of 2009. The delay in the delivery of these displays would explain the delay of the tablet which was originally forecasted to be delivered in late 2009.

"We will be sampling our 10″ screens this spring and plan to be in high volume mass production this summer. These screens have an epaper state that rivals the best epaper on the market today. What’s different: unlike the other epaper products where one must wait a second or so to change the screen – we provide video rate refresh. Also, while we have a high resolution paper-white black and white, we also provide, in the same screen fully saturated color fidelity – the same as a standard laptop screen – same color, contrast resolution, field of view etc"

This is it.

This technology would have all the advantages of 3Qi and then some. Seems just as (un)likely a candidate for the Apple tablet.

Yeah, after looking at your website and noting a complete lack of any actual product, I feel compelled to quote one of my favorite musicals:

There is no Dulcinea,
she's made of flame and air.
But, oh, how lovely life would seem
if every man could weave a dream
to keep him from despair.

It seems there are some additional connections

You can't judge the full quality of the display from a low-quality YouTube video..

I downloaded the videos h264 (Click2Flash) and:

-- the one with the woman is 1288x720 30FPS
-- the one with the man is 480x270 30 FPS

Both look pretty good ,Full Screen, on a 1920x1200 iMac 24

The other interesting thing is the interviewer challenged the woman that $200 was too much for the screen... her answer was, paraphrased: its more like $200 for the whole computer with the screen built into it.

This is it.

Not only is this the first news that may seem legit to me, but it actually seems REALLY promising. Wow.
And although I will still purchase it, I am still trying to get out of denial that it most likely wont have OS X.:(

"I will buy anything if its shiny and made by Apple."

I will almost certainly buy it too. I really hope we can take our iPhone's SIM out and put it in the tablet. That would be amazing and I wouldn't have to chop off my other arm to give to AT&T to pay for data.

Two words: Boooor rrrring. IMHO, this would be a HUGE step backward for Apple who is known for making things insanely great. This display, IMHO, is total sh*t.

Really?

I've been eagerly awaiting these screens for about 6 months now. Being able to use a laptop outside is a killer application. It looks like they will start showing up in products around Q2 2010.

This video is what really sold me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oawX3wenxNc&feature=related

WOOOOOOOAHHH!!!! I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT!!!! Good thing AT&T has one of the best most reliable 3G networks
***Unfortunately I fear AT&T would have a sh*tfit. They are having trouble with the network in some places still just with data from MMS...Furthermore, it seems they would require to be "tied in" some how with the tablet ie contract or something, I don't know.

Very intresting technlogy, would really fit into an imaginary Apple Tablet.

Also the 10" screen size and the low power technology and also the date available seem quite match the past rumors...

... but have you seen this image from their Website

http://pixelqi.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/color_stripes.155134929.JPG

That aluminium bezel and that round corners literally look very familiar to me.

Also interesting is that the EXIF of the image reveal that this has been shot with an iPhone whereas other images on the same page are not.

I've been wondering about whether Apple would use this in their tablet... it seemed a little far-fetched, because it is such a new technology, but I guess we'll see. If so, that would be great. It could actually get me thinking about buying one--assuming handwriting recognition is very good on the device.

Apple Owns a stake in pixar right?
Pixar is owned by disney right?
Disney recently bought marvel right?

Wouldnt a good use for this e-reader/netbook/tablet be to view comics?

I wouldnt be surprised if itunes made all of marvels products available for purchase for viewing on this tablet.

if apple use this ugly screen i aint buying one... i want to see an iphone/ipod touch glass screen!!!  :apple:

Then get a macbook instead. You haven't try this tablet in person yet, and yet you're already making assumptions about the screen of a product which hasn't come out yet.

Do not make such assumptions without trying something first.

Are you suggesting that Apple would scrap their current LCD plans, production orders & contracts, etc for this product? I don't believe that...while it may be nice, I think it would be more realistic to expect this technology in a second generation of Tablets. Or possibly the new iPhone (presumably released around June), if the technology scales down nicely to that size. I would definitely like to see some new screen technology in the next generation iPhone (at least with a higher resolution LCD screen so it is on-par with that of the Droid).

Umm, you're assuming Apple didn't know about this before, that Apple has the plans, production orders and contracts ready now and that they were planning for an LCD tablet of which is also likely that they may have those Pixel qi screens in production for the tablet.

We still have no proof that Apple will even release a tablet, yet alone know what kind of plans they have in place.

A tablet's battery life could be MORE crucial if it ends up being used in a hospital setting (like many, many tablets are being used in these days). If this is just a device to read books and play movies, then poor battery life is only an inconvenience. But if Apple wants this tablet used for more than just entertainment, they need to get battery life way, way up.

Done right, this could be a _killer_ device for use by nurses and techs in a hospital (or similar environments).

Hospital should be using thin clients instead of tablets, all the data should be in a secure data center in the hospital so that when the thin client dies, the nurse can just go to a charging station, pick up another thin client and get back to where they were left off. That's the smart thing to do.

i thought those screens were not nearly as vibrant as regulay LCD's.

with the tablet rumored to be a video watching device i can't see apple using them.

apple usually uses the best screens for watching video (within reason, within price).

those screens certainly would disappoint many who are used to the MBP screens and expect a similar experience.

They can just get the macbooks instead of a tablet, it is not a MB/MBP replacement. It is to complement your daily life by being a thin simple device of which you can quickly gain information and stay up to date all day long.

The Pixel Qi as far as I am aware, can be made using the same LCDs that Apple use but with the backlighting technology switched to have the ability to turn it off so that it works.

Most people would rather have 10-14 hours long battery life with to have super high Apple display. Videos aren't the only function of the tablet, ebook reading, note taking, email checking, social networking and so on are major functions of it too.

It is not a brand new technology, this kind of backlight technology actually have been around for a decade or so, it is just that nobody had any use for it in the past decade or people just didn't realize the technology could be useful for ebook reading. This screen technology does not require any major changes to the factories, any LCD makers can do this screen.

Yeah, this seemed like a really promising technology when I first learned about Pixel Qi a year or 2 back. Given all the rumors recently about magazines and e-publishing on this new Apple tablet, this is starting to seem like 2 + 2= 4.

I think the big question is how good regular color and video/photo playback will look on the screen.

Just to add to your comment, I think the Apple tablet will be perfect for this. I don't think it will be a full fledged Intel CPU with full Snow Leopard, I think it will be closer to a iPhone/iPod Touch OS for better battery life and better form factor. So it should work great as a thin client if the software to do so is developed.

Did you just say iPhone OS for better battery life? Did you really just say that? Because having the same iPhone for 2 years, I can assure you, the latest versions of the OS is horrible for battery life compared to the 1.x and 2.x. Don't tell me about the life of the device, my sister's iPhone suffered the same thing and it was only 5 months old.

Secondly, the OS will probably be customized for the tablet, after all iPhone OS is just a slimmed down custom build based on the OS X. Three OS isn't horrible to maintain if they are all based on the same codebase with the top levels of the OS being different.

Also I think we can assume it won't be a full fledged Intel CPU in a sense that it's not going to be either the desktop or laptop CPUs. It'll be running one of those ultra low voltage consumer chips or the Atoms or even possible the PA Semi's CPU. At this moment, I don't care, I just want to know if the tablet will come so that I don't have to impulsively buy one of those netbooks running the Pixel Qi screen.
