I could care less, we are now going to bitch about how the signal bars look?!?!?!?!?! What next, the font that AT&T is written in should be a fancy script? come on!!

We're bitching about Apple inventing tricks to fool their customers into thinking they actually increased the signal strength. Does Apple think their customers are idiots?

I don't really care. They're just bars,.

At least you can see them, though! Mine says it's going to take another two hours to download. WTF? Downloads never take this long for me!

It's not only the point of how bars look but Apple's way to optically trick people into believing they fixed something with some ugly bars that are almost equal in size

Meh, it's an illusion to make you 'think' you're getting better service when you're on 1 or 2 bars.

All they did is up how high the lowest signal strength bars go. To make it look like you're doing something, when you're not.

Pointless and sneaky. Disapprove.

You've got this backwards. The OLD bars made it look like better reception. The NEW bars are more accurate.

how does changing size of the bars make it more accurate? why not
1 bar = 20%
2 bars = 40%
3 bars = 60%
4 bars = 80%
5 bars = 100%

there you go a winrar crabby patty formula, no need for any fancy different size bars.

Aesthetically I prefer the original way but I do agree that it'll be easier to tell when you have 1 bar versus no bars.

The new look is more accurate given the change in how signal strength is displayed.

This image shows how:

But if the new way is more accurate per this chart then I guess it's ok. I really don't care one way or the other as long as I can make a phone call.

I can see scratches in the new bars. I think I will run out and buy a pouch for them.

Not to revive an old thread, though it's not that old...To those saying it's easier to see 1 bar vs no bars; IIRC iPhones have never shown 0 bars. It's either 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, or No Service.

For what it's worth, my OCD goes crazy when I see those ugly new bars.

I agree!

Instead of Apple wasting programming time on this pointless change, they could have addressed the slowness of iOS4 on the iPhone 3G.

Not true. I've always seen no bars but still have service.

I like them.

They're more accurate, more honest, and now I can see the '1 bar.'

Plus, 2, and 3 bars are finally useful indications of something. They used to just pop up for a second as the phone zipped by them. Now they actually SHOW you something.

It is nice being able to actually see the bottom bar now, but yes - it DOES look very goofy. It looks more like a curve now instead of a diagonal line (when full strength) and it makes it look weird. But yeah, it really doesnt make much difference. I mean, they can program it to show whatever they want, it wont change what your reception is.

Can someone take a screenshot of their homescreen with them? I want to see what the new bars look like on the regular screen.

Anyone annoyed by the new bars can jailbreak and install '4.0 Signal Bars' from Cydia. It doesn't change the newly improved accuracy of the signal bars, it just gives you back the old signal bar images.
