I've concluded I'm somehow hactivated...... Although I've come across nothing definitive, except hactivation causes excessive battery drain.
When one checks off "Activate the phone" during the Pwnage Tool pwnage, then that's explicit 'hacktivation.' (Pwnage Tool = jailbreak/unlock utility that is only on the Mac platform). If RedSn0w, for either PC or Mac, automatically hacktivates when an official SIM is not present, then I dunno -- I'm not in tune with RedSn0w, because I don't use it. I'm guessing RedSn0w is the context iLover1 may have been speaking in early on about official SIMs being present and whatnot.

As far as your research about hacktivation => battery drainage:
Yeah, there is this article that references unlockers on baseband 06.15.00: "the issue comes from iOS 4.1 and 4.2.1 which constantly look for valid push certificates." I had originally merely assumed that poor battery performance was something endemic to iOS 4.1, since the release notes on iOS 4.2 specifically mention "Improved Battery Performance".

I too have a battery draining iPhone: specifically a 3G on 4.1 with baseband 04.26.08. Pwning to 4.2.1 with SAM may ultimately be in my future, but..

...But before I re-pwn, I am going to toggle off Data and see what effect that has (its the last one to turn off...everything else - 3G,Wifi,bluetooth,multitasking - is already off). Since I am on baseband 04.26.08 and not on 06.15.00 as that article specifically mentions, I'm not 100% convinced that the hacktivation theory of battery drainage applies to me.

I'll report later on whether Data=off seems to have any effect.

Follow up:

Already, after a quickie overnight experiment, it appears that turning off Data on my iPhone has resulted in drastically improved battery performance. Previously, leaving my iPhone unplugged overnight would see its battery meter down to the 20% zone as indicated by the popup warning window. Now, the meter still looks to be at 100%.

This got me to look at my internet usage via my carrier. Sure enough, the phone has been accessing the internet umpteen times per day since that day in the middle of November when I installed 4.1. And each time it accessed, the usage was around 8 or 9 megabytes.

Prior to putting in 4.1, my internet access records also appear to show that while on 4.0 I also had some pingage. But it was on a FAR FAR SMALLER scale. Like two times in one day at 0.0369 and 0.0008 megabytes. In fact, I don't know if these were automated system pings or something I effected as user.

So the hacktivation theory of battery drainage appears to even apply to me as a baseband 04.26.08 user.

Everytime somebody shows me a link for the ipsw file it's a zip file! Where is the actual .ipsw file when i unzip it? What am I missing here? Or can I just update using the itunes updater?

See post 21. All you have to do is rename the unzipped folder, but you have to disable "hide extensions for known file types" in control panel - folder options - view.

You are refering to the "cellular data" in Network settings, correct? I'm not on a cellular network so this setting shouldn't effect me, but I did turn it off a day or so ago and still have drain. Thanks for all the results though.

Yes. Although I don't turn it on/off in there. I have SBSettings installed, where it's simply called "Data".

still have drain?
If for kicks you want to try attaining the smallest footprint possible, do these:
Kill all processes except "Phone" and "Mail" (you can even kill "Mail" if you want to, but it always respawns anyways)
Make sure Wi-Fi is turned off
Make sure Data is turned off
Make sure 3G is turned off
Make sure Bluetooth is turned off
Make sure multitasking is turned off

(If you don't have SBSettings installed, get it. You can verify the first 5 things with it. I used another Cydia program called zToggle to turn off multitasking.)

I discovered the wifi setting was draining the battery. So far I've gone almost 48 hours on half a charge. Before it was 8 hours on a full charge. I'm glad I finally have a functional iPhone with normal battery life but am still curious why my wifi is draining the battery? I never had battery issues before the redsnow jb and ultrasnow unlock while on a greenpoison jb. I'm guessing the software is to blame? Could the battery issue still be caused by hactivation?

I think may be you had a perfect storm, because one of the mini-storms is indeed that hacktivation-activation-certificate-pinging thing that you turned me on to (BTW, thanks for that. I've now completed SAM and made a thread sharing that experience.)
Wifi, Bluetooth and 3G all require extra electricity to run. And leaving Cellular Data opens the door to more electricity use if your phone is always downloading. Let me do some quick math based on an earlier post 17x9=153 Megabytes a day is how much activity my iPhone was doing daily. So if you are\r hacktivated on 4.1 or 4.2.1, monitor your usage in Settings>General>Usage to see what your Sent and Received kbs are.
