I can't update?

I can't seem to update,

My iPad currently has 4.2.0GM (build: 8C134) I am not a developer but my brother is and he installed the GM on my iPad on his account.

Now that 4.2.1 is released I have tried to update but iTunes just says that the current software is the most recent. I have tried to restore the iPad in the hope it goes back to a previous version but iTunes says "the resource *iPad name* cannot be located" even though the iPad shows in iTunes as a connected device.

I'm guessing that my iPad is in someway linked to my brothers account and is for some reason stopping me upgrading?

I have tried downloading the new file from apple direct and clicking shift update but the file is not extracting as an ipsw (I have windows 7 - sorry!)

Any advice please?

Wish I could enjoy 4.2 (and my iPad), but unfortunately it's been stuck at the back-up stage in iTunes for the last day and a half!

Too frightened to cancel, in case it starts all over again...

Wow! That is a long time. Do you know why this happens? My backups are usually very quick and I have quite a large library synced.

There's a big thread on the subject at Apple Discussions...

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2391299&start=350&tstart=0

I'm away from home at the moment and syncing with my MacbookPro instead of my MacMini (the usual sync machine) so the back-up has to start from scratch.

I've got apps which required a lot of data to be synced (GoodReader, Wired, VLC etc) and apparently back-up grinds to a virtual halt while performing this.

Think I might try using the "back-up off" util quoted in the above discussion. Only problem is, if the firmware refresh fails and bricks my iPad, all my app data is gone!

LOVING the update so far. Especially combined with my Apple TV 2. (thx to Airplay)

  • iPad seems quicker, zippier
  • Text appears to be more crisp, as do icons. Am I hallucinating?
  • FOLDERS!!!!!
  • Multi-tasking works just a good as on my iPhone 4

Overall, feels like a brand new iPad.

It seems better all the time for me, has anyone else noticed safari improvements too, it reloads the pages less when switching betWeen different tabs and copes better with larger pages - so far it hasn't crashed out on me, it used to go once or twice a day pre 4.2.

If only I could use the browser to upload files too, then I could dump my MacBook pro for the majority of my daily stuff.
