Like how you mentioned galaxy alpha and not galaxy s5 or even galaxy s4.

Galaxy alpha is a budget phone so of course it is not going to have a top of a line screen.

No, It's marketed as a premium phone, to compete with the iPhone 6. It is far from a budget phone; it costs £500 unlocked in the UK and $600 in the US.

It's the design Samsung has focused on- something that will help it compete in the premium market with Apple's upcoming iPhone.

Samsung lowered the high standard of the S5 ......To compete with the iPhone 6. What does that say.

Style over substance!

To what benefit?

Battery drain due to more gpu resources used.
Battery drain due to more RAM circuits energized.
Battery drain due to more backlight needed to illuminate through ever smaller pixels.

I only see negatives to the pointless epeen specsheet war.

The iPhone is renowned for never having the best battery life, so these are all moot points as every other phone with high res 1080P screens have enough battery life to match an iPhone.
It's Apple's fault it chooses to fit tiny capacity non removable batteries. Even the rumoured capacity for this 4.6" iPhone is frankly a joke these day's. They should be aiming for 2000mah minimum.

It's also embarrassing to have a phone with the resolution stated in this article, and then have a tablet range with much much higher standard resolutions across the range all above 1080P!

There is nothing magical about the 1080P resolution, especially when considered in a vacuum isolated from reality of differing use, viewing distances, and display sizes.

FYI, the 'tablet range' has much larger displays.

Also the iPad's 2048x1536 resolution is not a standard broadcast TV resolution, like you for some reason seem to want and value so highly.

And yet they are common in phones while 1472 x 828 isn't a standard anywhere at all.

You don't have reading skill, are you? Again, just to be sure that you can read, those are not standard for phone.
And why should I care when the resolution is above 300 PPI?

----------

..then have a tablet range with much much higher standard resolutions across the range all above 1080P!

Hmm.. that's because people actually watched movies on tablet because the screen is much larger. What so hard to understand?

No, but it is (was) a standard monitor resolution, but since that aspect ratio - sadly - has gone the way of the dodo you won't really see it anywhere any longer.

Anyway, I'd rather see 2560x1600 on the iPad as well.

Because you don't want to settle for the barely adequate 300 ppi but instead want a true high res display that's around 500 ppi or so?

Why would I want to waste battery for no reason?
And how 300 PPI is "barely adequate"? You seem to have no knowledge about video standard. Now you wanna claim you're videophile?

When you're talking about something stupid like 1080p is a phone standard, then be prepared be called out as such. Shouldn't we make sure we know what we're talking about first?

For the same reason no one in the entire world will ever need more than 640KB of RAM. At least according to Bill Gates.

What's that has gotta do with each others at all?
Can you write longer?
Can you see a molecule?

They expect people to watch movies on their iPhone though. At the iPhone 5 keynote they were showing off the new 4 inch, widescreen display, saying how great it looked for watching movies.

It really should be 1080p minimum. I wouldn't buy the galaxy alpha because amongst other things it only has a 720p display. On that note I think I'll have to pass on the iPhone 6. Looks like the note 4 has won.

I'd just like to say that Steve Jobs was probably wrong.

This has nothing to do with SJ. People in printing business knows this a very long time ago. Since we had first color printer, or so...

And it's really great watching videos on iPhone 5. So what's your point again?

That's because you fell prey to the marketing gimmick.

Maybe I'm the exception of the rule, but I can easily see the pixels even in a 5 inch 1080p display. I don't care what the printing business says. I've seen tons of books with blurry text and pictures.

And too many of my audiophile friends claimed they hear what they're not supposed to hear. When tested scientifically (blind test) it's proved they didn't hear it at all. (They claimed they can hear the difference between SACD and a normal CD from the same master)

Have you considered the simple fact that some people hear better than others? Many young people can easily hear sounds of 25000Hz and beyond.

I have, frankly. I yet to find one. (I'm the one who did the blind tests)

No I've used 720p, 1080p and 2K displays and can see the benefits of higher resolution. I really want to give apple another chance, but the way things are shaping up, it looks as though it will just be another step backwards as it was when I tried to use the 5S earlier this year.

I don't watch movies on my phone but I do watch TV shows and for that I want the best resolution possible.

Whichever phone I get, I'll have to fork out around £500 so I want to know that it's money well spent. I suppose if you're used to using the sub HD display on the iPhone then, 720p is a good upgrade.

Well, I know what I'm talking about, but your lacking language skills make me doubt you actually understand me. (See, I can do this, too!)

Let me enlighten you: ever heard of things like standardised resolutions? Well, you don't have to answer, because obviously, you have not.

Resolutions like 640x480, 1024x768, 1440x900, 1920x1080 or 2880x1800 have one thing in common: they are standards. Even the iPhone 5's 1136x640 can be related to a display standard, although it's already slightly odd.

1472x828 belongs to no ever defined display standard. It's a combination of numbers that no one has ever used before or currently uses.

Clear enough for you?

Then don't expect others to have the same eyesight you have when it comes to smartphone displays.

Since I yet to find one who's this extraordinary, I expect people more or less have the standard eyesight that scientists had studied thoroughly. People will believe what they believe. You'll be very surprised to find many of their beliefs actually don't hold any water when tested scientifically.

Resolution is just one quality of pictures. When one like what one saw it doesn't need to be because of resolution.

Except you're wrong. Yes, 20/20 is generally excepted as normal vision, but the truth is that many people see far beyond 20/20.

It's nice of you to talk about real standard now.

Clear enough for you?

But again, why do you care that it's not standard? What's purpose? Those standards are for easy support. If Apple can support strange standard, why do you care?

Again, I didn't deny it but it's the exception not the norm.
