This is actually brilliant. Let the competition waste CPU and GPU cycles on 2K and 4K displays on 5" devices that show no more detail than a display like this. Let their OS and hardware try to keep up with that many pixels to no real advantage.

That allows iOS to appear snappier, faster, more responsive because the system has less USELESS pixels to drive.

I still don't understand why people think that developers are suddenly going to abandon iOS if Apple switches to another odd resolution. Yes, it will require work to redo graphics for apps, but I find it hard to believe that they'll ditch one of the two biggest smartphone ecosystems because of something little like that.

The whole retina iPad mini was just apple being apple gimping the screen maximizing profits. Their iPhone's never do that, thank goodness. I think it's a good idea this way like many have said to maximize app compatibility. They sorta dug themselves in a hole really.

Just like non 16:9 screen with their previous gen iPhones and now with the iPhone 5+ they decided to go with 16:9. But of course they aren't gonna bow down to industry standards and go with 1080p displays. It's not in apple's DNA because snobbery is what apple is best at.

Doesn't even matter, there are millions who will line up for this because in this world, there are few smart people, but plenty of dumb people - with lots of money!

Nice, you just explained Android's higher marketshare.

You need to address this question to apple. Of course they need more iPhoneX models each year to milk from you kool-aid lovers!

Why do we keep using that term to refer to any group of people who are clearly not killing themselves over a religious zeal?

I think he's just trying to be smart; I'd like to know which pokedex has 1080p in 1995, however.

When there is lower than standard resolution on an apple device, every apple fanatic says it's better for battery life and not needed. But everyone who owns a note 3, s5, g3, and the list goes on has better battery life than any apple iPhone.

For those who say they can't tell the difference, when going back to an iPhone, the screen is just blurry. This is coming from 400-500+ppi devices. Same goes for the iPad when you've been used to 2560x1600 resolution on an 8.4" super AMOLED screen, you can't go back to anything else apple has.

Just for the sake of discussion, why are you on an Apple rumors site?

And having spent a good deal of time switching back and forth between a Galaxy Tab and a retina iPad, I can honestly say that my personal observations do not corroborate your claims. If anything, I think the iPad looks better, though that's probably just the OS. The screens both look equal amounts of great when consuming content. I just think it's a pity that the Samsung panel is attached to a Samsung tablet.

You don't understand android users, they like to be fooled by a vivid color saturated display and don't care about color accuracy. Trust me...since when android users are artists? Nope...they're geeks. Geeks and art don't go together.

The picture seems to tell 1360x768 for 4.7" with a slightly higher pixel density than current iPhones. And that would mean 1600x900 for 5.5" if this size is considered/coming.
No retina 3x for sure.

You'd have everything on screen too small at 2x with a 1472x828 resolution at 360 ppi for 4.7", and it won't be at 3x because you'd have a smaller effective resolution than the 4" so even less practical real estate. And 1704x960 at 3x for the 5.5" would mean current 4" apps blown-up on 5.5", that's not happening either.

Oh, but you will be able to tell the difference. You'll take one look at it and notice how much better it is. More crisp and clear.

Cut the crap. Put iPad Air 15" and iPhone 5 10" away from your eyes. Tell me if they look different because I can't. It's 264 dpi vs 326 dpi.

You know what 11" is? Who in the hell never holds their phone closer than that? By the way, there are actually numerous other factors but I won't post a link to a video describing them.

Um, me. The only time I hold my phone that close to my face is when it's next to my ear for a phone call.

I put my 5S next to a G3 and I absolutely can tell the difference. There is a variation in how well people see.

How much of that is AMOLED vs. LCD, though? PPI may not make an appreciable difference. AMOLED tends to be oversaturated, and Apple is unlikely to use it in an iPhone or iPad anytime soon.

Here's a thought: What if this is actually a screen from an iPhone 6C?

It does seem like Apple would have increased the resolution more dramatically if for no other reason than marketecture.

Why all the pixels needed? My Samsung Galaxy Note II has a ppi of 267. And the screen on that is way good enough for me.

Too many pixels for a device no larger than 5.5 is a waste of time. Only so much detail the human eye can see on a device that size.

Also more ppi the more wasted battery. So higher res screen and less battery.. Or still good enough res screen and slightly better battery life. Choose.

Also, to be very clear:

Any screen claiming 1920x1080, that is also PenTile, is not, in fact, 1920x1080. The green channel might be 1080p, but red and blue are badly subsampled, making the overall display gritty.

Claiming 1920x1080 with PenTile is pure marketing nonsense.

Interesting point.

All these people complaining about pixel densities of 350 not beeing sharp enough. Still most of them are on computer screens of 130ppi-ish...

I have never ever thought that my 5s isn't sharp enough and I'm really nitpicky about stuff like that using retina on Macbook and iPad as well. I admit that I see difference between say my Macbook and my iPhone when i look at same viewing distance, the text is sharper on the iPhone but that's kind of expected comparing 227ppi to 326ppi. This difference doesn't really carry over when I compare to a 400+ppi screen.

Still no one is complaining that Macbook retina screens are blurry, not even their cMBP and MBA. This whole issue is just because there are others out there over doing things because they can. This is the very definition of not putting focus on the things that matters. All these other manufactures will still stand there with their 500ppi displays while Apple have put focus developed new things that will actually benefit the users.

You know what I find the most funny.

People here defending this rumor.

And yet, come launch day, if the 4.7" iPhone has a better screen than this rumor is reporting. Those exact same people will be saying, Yes, Perfect, it was right of Apple to go with this new, whatever is might be, screen res.

It's so predictable.

The G3 (LG phone here, not Samsung) uses LCD technology, not AMOLED.

You must look funny holding your mobile phone as far away from your face as you do your computer monitor. :D
