i had updated my 3gs 16gb to iOS 5 gm edition and did not face problems at all. no lag or such. just a bit slow when changing to different apps. other than that I'm ok! as smooth as my 4.3.5 which was running earlier. hmm.

You cant really expect a phone from 2009 run that fast with the latest and greatest iOS.

I couldn't handle how slow iOS 5 GM made my 3GS run. [...]

Note that I'm not using any services and 3G data is turned off, with the occasional wifi use. Perhaps those are to blame?

That said, my 3GS actually feels zippier after updating to iOS 5 GM. Smoother animations, less stuttering in lists, battery went back to normal (might have been some indicator display error but I had my 3GS turn it self off in the previous 4.x version due to no battery after far, far too short time).

Interesting that my experience is almost the opposite of yours. Had anyone asked I'd actually recommended the GM over previous 4.x versions for the 3GS.

Something that I have personally noticed is that you upgrade into a major release such as iOS 5.0 it is very glitchy and slow but if you do a clean restore into it and don't restore from backup it runs really well.

I am running iOS5 GM on my old 3GS and it runs perfectly. I never notice any slowdowns.

I got a 1015 error. I always get a 1015 error on my 3GS. Fix recovery does not work. Tiny Umbrella does not work.

I've been running the betas and now the GM on my 3gs for a few months, not had any real problems with speed or battery life. It seems to run fine, just as well as before.

Then again, it's not my main phone, so 3g is turned off (no data plan), and it's not used all that heavily.

I did a clean, DFU restore to 5.0.

Yes, but they are not selling it as the newest and best phone. It will run it, but not as good as the newer phones. That is the main point.

Obviously it won't run like on a 4S, but Apple is about user experience. If it's not nice to use, they shouldn't sell it.

I have the 3gs and after running ios 5 for the last 4 days i have no problem with speed. Maybe a bit zipper.

I've also been running the GM for a few days now too on my 3GS. I don't notice any slowness, but then again I'm kind of anal with closing apps I'm not using right away. Music app has stuttered and stalled a few times, but I'm sure it's nothing that can't be fixed as updates go on. But definitely no slower than 4.3.3.

Honestly, my 3GS is definitely running faster with 5 than it was with 4. Still not nearly as fast as 3 was though.

I haven't loaded it on my 3GS, but it's perfectly fine on my third generation touch. It's just as fast as iOS 4. OP, did you set it up as new, or restore it from a backup?

Aw, cute. Go ***** yourself. :)

It ran slower than normal and Safari crashed quite a bit. Also, if I was playing music and received an alert it sometimes would make the music stutter. Opening up the multitasking tray and "closing" apps helped it run better some of the time.

Wow. Gotta love the comment rating system MR implemented. 4 votes down for posting a helpful link? Some of you guys need to grow up.

Get used to it here. These putzes on the forums probably haven't graduated high school yet. There should be an age limit on here, say about 35.

I've been running iOS 5 on my 3GS since the 1st beta. I've had no problems with it at all.

There seems to be quite a few different opinions on iOS 5 running on the 3GS. A post in this thread suggests that it runs better than iOS 4. Does anyone else have the GM running on a 3GS?

Yeah... it's reliable, but definitely slower than it was with iOS 4.
