I want 4 freaking inches, if Apple is really taking a while with iOS 5 and iPhone 5. It better be worth it, or it'll be my last Apple device.

This is what I've been saying. It's not possible in the same form.
This isn't the purpose of this thread, but, at MAX, they'd have to add about 1/16" to each side to make a comfortable fit and you'd be hard pressed to notice the size change (and it would KILL the competition). It would put it back to about the same width as the 3GS (that's what I meant by "shell").

Apple could also pull a fast one: Stretch the screen vertically so that it was 4" but keep the aspect ratio the same and limit it to the center (think black bars top and bottom), leaving the extra room at the top and bottom for title and notifications (and/or a touch home button). You'd basically be left with a 3.5" screen, but the peripheral stuff would be "off screen".

I'm sick of people saying "edge to edge would be too hard to hold". What genius holds their phone by the FRONT???
Top and bottom is different for landscape and gaming, etc.. but the vertical sides?? Give me a break.

Personally I'm happy with the current screen, or maybe 3.7" at most so that the same aspect ratio is preserved within the same case. A 4" screen in the same shell requires a change in aspect ration which, unless they also change the resolution, would distort all existing apps and cause them to look stretched; I really can't see Apple doing that in a million years.

One issue that I don't see mentioned much is power consumption. A big drain on the battery is the backlight and I would have thought that that is proportional to total screen area so any increase in screen size would be at the expense of battery life.

I have been saying it too, but it seems people still keep repeating it is possible to have a same size iphone with a 4" screen like a mantra .

Also many people keep saying this and that is not Retina. Guys Retina is just a marketing term created by Apple. This is not a technical definition.

Not true... Retina can be defined:

The innermost light-sensitive membrane covering the back wall of the eyeball; it is continuous with the optic nerve

Just may not be definition Apple is looking for :p

In the same size - bigger is better. However, I think you asked the wrong question.

Smaller 3.5"

or

3.7"+ in the same size

I would probably take the smaller 3.5" phone.

the iphone is already smaller than anything else on the market, would it then be the nano if it was even smaller

Don't get me wrong. I would love a larger screen in the current phone size. That would be a great enhancement.

However, despite the fact that I use my phone a lot, it still spends much more time being carried around in my pocket, along with my wallet and keys. Therefore, in terms of form factor, my number one need is "as small as possible".

I think that manufacturers have gotten off track with their 4" phones. First and foremost it's a portable device that most people take everywhere, so it should be as portable as possible.

I think that a nano-sized iPhone with a 3.5" screen would stand out in a way that would make the other phones seem gaudy and brick-like by comparison.

Another reason for Apple to keep the iPhone' screen at 3.5" is the iPad. I am sure they don't want the iphone to start cutting into the iPad's market.

There are plenty of smaller smartphones than the iphone like the HTC Aria which is a damn good phone with it's 3.2" display. They should just make 3 different sizes to make everybody happy, but that would make Applefans head explode. He would need to buy all three models to keep his OCD from making life unbearable.

You know you're right. My wife has an Inspire and it's like a brick compared to my iphone 4. The closest device that is pretty close to iphone form factor with larger screen is the Atrix.

I don't really think a 4" iPhone would cut into the iPad's market. Actually I know it wouldn't.

Neither do I but the business guys at Apple may think so. Remember all the 7" ipad rumor not long ago?

If the phone itself is the same size, then sure. The reason I can't stand Droid phones is that they are HUGE. I think the iPhone 4 is the perfect size. No reason to actively try to make it larger than it if you're Apple.

I posted this in the comments thread and though it would be interesting to post it here as well:

I live in Brazil and a major website in here included a poll in one of their iphone news where people could choose what they wanted in the next generation iphone.

People can only select one option between better battery life, adobe flash support, brazilian itunes store, bigger screen, 4G, dual core processor, NFC, more megapixels, thinner design, curved design, better screen resolution and more storage.

A bigger screen size is the 4th most wanted feature only behind better battery life, adobe flash support and a brazilian itunes store (we don't have music store here).

Since flash is out of question and the itunes store issue is a local problem, the bigger screen is the 2nd most desired feature.. Again this results coming from a news portal so not as biased as polls in tech websites. As of now it's been answered by almost 14 thousand people.

Here's the link if anyone's interested: http://tecnologia.uol.com.br/album/enquete.jhtm?album=iPhone5_enquete&idEnquete=1439#r

I vote for a 4" screen in an iPod Nano shell. (Hey, if we're speaking of impossibilities, why no go for broke? :) )

Back at the ranch in the real world, given the choice of the current iPhone 4 size with a 3.5" screen, and a larger device with a 4" screen, I'll take the 3.5".

I suppose another option is to keep the current screen width but make it taller, without the device itself being bigger. That's an interesting proposition I could probably go for.

Even if it a 4" could fit in the same shell, I really don't want to buy a glass phone. Maybe if I could get a metal replacement back I'd try it but otherwise no.

I wouldn't mind a larger screen as long as the frame stays the same size. I had a large PDA phone years ago and it was just too big. Sure, the large screen is nice for the internet, but the 3.5" screen is good enough for me. I also like that it fits comfortably in my front or back pockets.
