Right back where I started...
Happy New Year to all! Hope everyone had a great end of year celebration. Now is the time to get back on board with the new year and use your new 'gifts' to keep in shape, get in shape or keep a resolution.

For that to happen we have created a variety of Challenges for participation.
Each Quarter everyone will be invited to a 5k and 10k time trial - this is to promote speed competition and to keep everyone honest...;)

For the Group - we created a very high goal of 25,000 miles in 2008, we will need everyone to help out to achieve it. Here it is
http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/?l=all_challenges,1358401172

I am also going to add monthly challenges for the group as well. I will take applespider's suggestion of the run for your birth month to start us off and make that a 2 month challenge for the slow starters.

Now for the make yourself a better runner challenges:
There are 4 Clubs set up:

I am in all of them since I created them (except the 1000 Mudbug - thanks).

If you start in a 500 and want jump up to the 1000 then just let the organizer know - all miles ran in the year are counted so it is not like you have to start over.

I placed the majority of folks in the 500, for the 1000 I think you can link to it above, for the 1500 and 2000 I placed some folks in already - if you want to be in one you are not then let me know.

Have a great year of running and you will find plenty of support here to encourage you along the way.

Thanks Ziwi.

I've just started short jogs again.
My ankle still has a bit of swelling but no pain:).
Frustrating. Out for 5 weeks:mad:

I'm going to give it a workout today, fast as I can for 20 minutes.

Cheers, Ziwi. Thanks for keeping the ball rolling into the new year.

I put this up on MacRumors Page 2 as well as MacBytes - we'll see if we can get a bit more exposure and participation.

Awesome. I'm planning on getting back into running this year (the last 6 months I've been a sloth), and already have a 10 mile race (the Cherry Blossom in DC) scheduled, and am hoping to run a fall marathon.

I'll be signing up for the 1000 mile challenge, but I have a stretch goal of getting into the 1500 mile bracket....

Thanks. This will definitely help the motivation.

Paul

I have a question. How long does the Nike sensor last?

My understanding is it generates the power needed as it goes, so it shouldn't die due to battery life, but beyond that (wear and tear, etc...) I don't know.

Paul

PS- Please don't ask me HOW it generates power. I have visions of tiny little hamsters who get woken up by movement, and start running on tiny little wheels attached to even tinier generators...

Good question.

I was using mine the other day, for the first time in a couple of months, and it went straight to low battery, not really recording anything.

It seems those 1000 hrs are just bulls...eh...pooh, mine has just under 100 hrs total time on it. It seems a large portion of them seem to 'expire' around the one year mark. Mine was 11 1/2 months old, but since I couldn't find my receipt anywhere (and bought it with a gift card, not my debit card, double dammit), I had to order a replacement sensor from Apple. Good news is that it shipped today, bad news is that because of New Years Day it will probably not be here for a week or so.

Which means I'll be ready to start training again (from near zero ) now in January, and will probably enter a few challenges (mostly as 'listefyll' as we say in Norwegian, literally 'list filling' ;)).

great job getting these challenges made and getting them publicized ziwi and mudbug! Looking forward to seeing more new runners in these challenges for 2008. :)

dang, you still have swelling? that's not good, but at least it's getting better.

i don't know if running as fast as you can for 20 minutes is a good idea, but i know you're frustrated. just try to be patient.

thanks Mudbug. hopefully we'll get more runners

2008 I know will be a great year for me and running but I wish I could spend more time logging my miles. Indoor track starts a week from today and I will go to where I only log the runs I do by myself because I don't think it is a good idea to use the iPod during practice. Still going to help with the 25,000 miles. One day I'll win one of these challenges.

I don't get it. Will I have to get out of my chair?
Not if it has wheels... :p

BTW, has anybody wondered what the Nike+ sensor looks like on the inside...?

I'm pretty sure I'll find the receipt now... :p

I just signed up for the 500 mile challenge. Now all I have to do is remember to take my iPod with me on my runs. I usually just use a Garmin 301.

Nice that the challenge starts at 10 PM today because I'll be in a 3-mile race starting at 10:30.

It was all or nothing time.
I ran to a coached 20 minute interval workout MP3.
3.3KM @ average pace of 6:06 per KM.
That's about 90% pace.

Everything feels ok (20 hours later).
I need to be ready, 25,000 miles in 2008:cool:

sweet! thanks ziwi! 1000 mile club for me! after finding the Los Angeles Historic State Park about 1/2 mile from my apartment, should be no problem. anyone who wants to check it out: here. its about a 2km loop. signed up under my nike and xbl screen name backasJac.

i still say it's fine to run regular distance runs with it in your hand, just no headphones.

Very cool to see that MR Nike+ challenges are still going strong. When it comes to running, I'm not really into challenges personally, but this looks like a great way to get people involved who otherwise wouldn't be inspired.

I encourage anyone who's even remotely considering the Nike+iPod thing to jump in and give it a shot.

Good luck, all!

Hey ZIWI,
I'd like to join your challenge. I currently can not join the challenge on the Nike webpage. Let me know what I need to do to join this.

Okay guys I am in the 500-mile club now. Let's see if I can stay committed and pull it off!
