I heard some (horror?) stories about Straight Talk terminating users if they exceed an unknown quota of data, not only would they terminate the user, but apparently they hold the phone number as hostage for 30 days, effectively rendering the account inactive and the user loosing their number.

Someone even described it as 'playing Russian rolette' with your number. Is this true?
yes, very true. They terminated my account because I was receiving international text messages. They terminated my account with my phone number together. I had to buy a new SIM card from them and get a new number.

So, if your phone number is important to you, you should be very careful while using this company. You should make sure to not use too many data, or even sending huge amount of text messages or phone minutes.

Do you guys have the option to just have a data plan in the US? (We don't here with the main carriers). I say this because that's what I'd do and use Skype to call to other phones or Viber if available...

They terminated your account because you were receiving "international texts"? Are you serious? When did this happen? Why the hell would they do that?

Not only that, but I've sent/received many international texts (my parents live overseas, plus many friends) in the last 6 months and I've never had an issue.

Thanks! I got my phone number as a grad student, and it got printed on at least 5 different business cards over the past 9 years. There is no way I am willing to risk it regardless of how cheap StraightTalk is.

Right now to be honest T-Mobile (or their younger brother, SimpleMobile) seem to be the most attractive option, I live in NYC metro area so supposedly I have HSPA+ on the iPhone, and even with Edge speed, that's better than loosing your number

No it didnt work. i already made these settings when i first got it in the mail. i guess ill have to just keep messing with it. i dont know why im not allowed to browse. it just keep sending me to the tracfone homepage

Did you ever figure out how to browse the web using your straight talk plan with the galaxy x2? Im having the same problem!

Does TetherMe still work if your iPhone is jailbroken? I'm thinking about moving to StraighTalk as well, and surprisingly the APN settings changed on my iPhone 4 on iOS 6.0.1, so I can live without MMS until a untethered solution comes out to use TetherMe to get MMS.

After I use it, will the settings still be there even after I back up my phone and restore?

Ive had Straight talk for a while and love it. Just use a tmobile sim swap to get to the apn settings page and your set.

"MMS is dependent upon your phone model’s limitations. If you have an iPhone and you would like to use MMS, you will need to Jailbreak* your iPhone in order to update your MMS settings. *Search “Jailbreak iPhone” on-line for more information."

Apple's gonna sue them.

A friend of mine has an iPhone 4s.
I had it unlocked by AT&T.
I restored it in iTunes with latest IOS6.
I downloaded http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4839
Created new profile for phone with SIM Data
http://m.straighttalksim.com/view/page/p/89120/straighttalksim-data-apn-settings.
I got everything working. Phone,Text,MMS,Internet.
No jailbreak required
FYI, I can Talk and Surf at the same time.

straight talk runs on AT&T towers and all straight talk &T sims are programmed with AT&T carrier id on the sim. The iphone is looking for an AT&T carrier id to activate and work. The phone is locked to AT&T and straight talk is on AT&T. That is why locked iphones like the iphone 5 will work on straight talk since it is just straight talk sim programmed with AT*T info. You do not need to unlock any iphone to work on straight talk. Just buy the right sim or cut to size and enjoy that savings. Keep in mind 2gb of data, unlimited min and unlimited text.

Except that data and MMS need to be setup. And because the iPhone sees the ST SIM as an AT&T SIM, it won't let you go into Carrier Settings.

yet another reason why google voice is so fantastic

You can still perform flip flop trick using t-mobile sim or foreign sim and swap to straight talk sim to program apn and mms. You will always have to program apn and mms even on an unlocked phone unless it is jailbroken and using tetherme. Once you insert the AT*T/straight talk sim the option for editing cellular data disappears. Only under jailbreak and using teatherme are you able to manually edit apn and mms. You can always use unlockit.co.nz and use that to load straight talk profile but that is data and not mms.

I just meant it wasn't quite as straightforward as some may think.

Got my Straight Talk SIM sent to Walmart for pick up and I'm loving the service so far! It's up to par to my old AT&T speeds, or even faster. I ended up doing a tethered JB on my 6.0.1 iPhone 4 because I didn't have anther SIM and I needed MMS, and got TetherMe, as well as FakeCarrier to change HOME to SoftBank :p So, is it true that they aren't cutting out accounts anymore, and they're just throttling if you go over 2GB of data?

Has anyone on ST has been experiencing problems with MMS? My mms settings no longer work, I'm on 6.0.1 as well.

Did you recently update from iOS5? I am on iOS5 and would like to update but am afraid if I just update the settings will be erased or nonfunctional in regards to MMS.

Yes I upgraded to 6.0.1 version. I think that may be part of the problem.

When you updated we're you required to reconfigure all your settings or did they carry over automatically?

Yes, updating to iOS 6 will remove the old MMS/data settings. If you want to hold on to your jailbreak (or customized MMS settings), I'd hold off.

Chestvrg, how did you originally set up MMS? By jailbreaking? Or sim swap?

I originally configured the mms settings using the swap SIM method but those same settings don't seem to work now. I don't know what to do, tomorrow I will try again to see if I can fix and put the correct settings.
