I am not all that tech savy but I get by and want to save a few dollars so... I have an ATT iphone 4 and am thinking about going to straight talk with it but have a few questions. I have read lots on this but still feel I need some clarification.
1.To get phone and text use (not mms) I simply put in the straight talk sim card?
2.To get data like 3G I have to go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz and click on APN and change it to straight talk?
3. What about imessages? Does turning on the data allow imessages with pictures an so forth?
I would like MMS too but it seems more complicated and with imessages working I think I can get by.
The iPhone 4 my brother in law received from me had IOS 6 beta, which I found out expired Sunday. It is in the middle of the month with the current ST plan.
To get the phone unlocked, a friend of theirs loaded the release version of IOS 6 on the phone.
Are there any known issues with "reactivating" the phone with the current SIM and number? I'm told the activation phase of the phone is failing. I'm still trying to find out more information. They are 190 miles away.
Nothing that says you have to get a new SIM in this case?
Sell your 3GS for $300 and it's not even $100!!![]()
One thing I had apparently forgot is text messages. I was thinking that you had to go through the unlockit page to activate that too, so the fact that she could text me with it led me to believe that, either wifi was working (and therefore using iMessage), or somehow she had gone to that site. I just checked my ATT page, and see that it is actually going text.
Does this work? And would anyone know if it works on LTE?
I heard some (horror?) stories about Straight Talk terminating users if they exceed an unknown quota of data, not only would they terminate the user, but apparently they hold the phone number as hostage for 30 days, effectively rendering the account inactive and the user loosing their number.
Someone even described it as 'playing Russian rolette' with your number. Is this true?
The magic number is reported as 2-2.5 GB, stay under 2 and you'll be fine.
Also - assuming I exceed it, is it true that I loose my number?
Though I am on 'unlimited' on Sprint, and even last year when data was very reasonable, I never exceeded 2 GB a month. However, I sometimes Pandora a 2 hour drive, so I may exceed 100 MB per day (and use like 2 MB other days). Is it true there is also another soft cap of 100 MB per day?

Port your current number to Google Voice for $20.
Then it doesn't matter how many times they change your number, or how many times you bounce between carriers and change your number. You just update Google Voice and you never have to give out another number again.
I changed my number 4 times last year and never had to give out any of them. I don't even remember them myself as my Google Voice number is the same number I have used and distributed for the last 10 years.

Super smart suggestion, thank you! So this means my number is forever mine, and rather than porting numbers between carriers, I can just take a new number and setup a forwarding number.
The question is, does this setup work with iPhone visual voicemail or iMessage to your phone? I heard straighttalk does not work with visual voicemail regardless
Question for you straight talk users.
A friend of mine is trying to get her portable hotspot feature to work (iPhone 4s iOS 6) and when she goes into the settings it says that the hotspot is active and everything but yet it still doesn't show up when searching for wifi hotspots with either of our laptops.
Does straight talk not allow hotspot and tethering or is there something with the phone?
This directly violates the terms and conditions of the agreement with Straight Talk and they can throttle or deny you service because of it.
Whether they will catch on or not is anybody's guess. If the phone is jailbroken, use TetherMe. It has always worked wonders for me.
