Does st works anywhere theres AT&T signal. I travel around a lot for work.

Thinking about signing up....

In the 6 months I've been with ST - I've traveled from Coast to Coast with absolutely no issues.

I live in SoCal and travel twice a week between San Diego and Los Angeles, and everywhere else in between the other days of the week. I was in New York in March, Boston in June, and did some driving up and down the Both States on each trip - Not once did I have an issue. Only time I lost service was on the ferry to Martha's Vineyard.

Other than the Data outage in August, I've been happy but the data inconsistency had me looking elsewhere.

simple man with a simple question

I am not all that tech savy but I get by and want to save a few dollars so... I have an ATT iphone 4 and am thinking about going to straight talk with it but have a few questions. I have read lots on this but still feel I need some clarification.
1.To get phone and text use (not mms) I simply put in the straight talk sim card?
2.To get data like 3G I have to go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz and click on APN and change it to straight talk?
3. What about imessages? Does turning on the data allow imessages with pictures an so forth?
I would like MMS too but it seems more complicated and with imessages working I think I can get by.

1. yes
2. Yes
3. As long as you have data, you have imessage. Imessage allows you to send pictures.

I don't have anymore data inconsistency since that August blemish...everything is great now..

The iPhone 4 my brother in law received from me had IOS 6 beta, which I found out expired Sunday. It is in the middle of the month with the current ST plan.

To get the phone unlocked, a friend of theirs loaded the release version of IOS 6 on the phone.

Are there any known issues with "reactivating" the phone with the current SIM and number? I'm told the activation phase of the phone is failing. I'm still trying to find out more information. They are 190 miles away.

Nothing that says you have to get a new SIM in this case?

I have activate my old iPhone 4S using a ST sim. You have to have the phone connected to wifi. This can take a few minutes to get right. Yes, it was a locked iPhone btw. The genius didn't even know that was possible when I got a warranty exchange. I'm sure it's the same in iOS 6.

It turned out that the person who was going to load the official release of IOS 6 didn't. Thought he was someone who would know what he was doing.

My sister went to the apple store, and they reloaded the out of warranty iPhone 4 for free.

Now I just have to talk her through going through the unlockit web site to get data working. She isn't able to access the web at home or away. I have trouble with this, since her router acts up. She keeps on wanting to know whether she should call ST for that. I tell her NO, that they can't help her on stuff like that.

One thing I had apparently forgot is text messages. I was thinking that you had to go through the unlockit page to activate that too, so the fact that she could text me with it led me to believe that, either wifi was working (and therefore using iMessage), or somehow she had gone to that site. I just checked my ATT page, and see that it is actually going text.

Yeah, thankfully text messages work out of the box.

Does this work? And would anyone know if it works on LTE?

Does this "work"? If you mean StraightTalk service in general, yes it does. Out of the box, voice calls and text messages work. There is an extra step required to configure data and a variety of methods to get MMS working. There were several people who had problems with data back in August (and might still be having problems), but generally their service is what you pay for.

As far as anyone know on here, StraightTalk probably won't get LTE any time soon.

Is it true you can loose your number with straight talk?

I heard some (horror?) stories about Straight Talk terminating users if they exceed an unknown quota of data, not only would they terminate the user, but apparently they hold the phone number as hostage for 30 days, effectively rendering the account inactive and the user loosing their number.

Someone even described it as 'playing Russian rolette' with your number. Is this true?

The magic number is reported as 2-2.5 GB, stay under 2 and you'll be fine.

I have been using straight talk since Feb 2012 on 3 iphones and have had no issues. All our family members stay below 2gb and the HSPA + speed are awesome. Paying less than $45.xx per month for iphone 5 line with unlimited min, text and 2gb of data is worth it.

Though I am on 'unlimited' on Sprint, and even last year when data was very reasonable, I never exceeded 2 GB a month. However, I sometimes Pandora a 2 hour drive, so I may exceed 100 MB per day (and use like 2 MB other days). Is it true there is also another soft cap of 100 MB per day?

Also - assuming I exceed it, is it true that I loose my number?

I've heard rumors that this is the case, but even for those who have gone over both the daily and monthly limits, they haven't mentioned losing their number. It just seems to be rumors at this point.

Port your current number to Google Voice for $20.
Then it doesn't matter how many times they change your number, or how many times you bounce between carriers and change your number. You just update Google Voice and you never have to give out another number again.

I changed my number 4 times last year and never had to give out any of them. I don't even remember them myself as my Google Voice number is the same number I have used and distributed for the last 10 years.

Google Voice is very inconvenient on the iPhone. The integration sucks compared to android.

Super smart suggestion, thank you! So this means my number is forever mine, and rather than porting numbers between carriers, I can just take a new number and setup a forwarding number.

The question is, does this setup work with iPhone visual voicemail or iMessage to your phone? I heard straighttalk does not work with visual voicemail regardless

No visual voicemail.

For iMessage it's best to use your email as caller ID. You won't be able to use the google voice number as caller id.

iMessage works perfectly. I believe it is because I have it linked to my email.
Visual voicemail does not work, but Google Voice has visual voicemail built in. (don't setup your carrier voicemail and the Google Voice one picks up automatically)

Google voice integration is frustrating without jailbreak.
You have to go through the app to make calls and non iMessage texts if you aren't jailbroken.

If you are jailbroken SMS GV Extension and Phone GV Extension work it natively into the operating system. You will never even know its there:

Question for you straight talk users.

A friend of mine is trying to get her portable hotspot feature to work (iPhone 4s iOS 6) and when she goes into the settings it says that the hotspot is active and everything but yet it still doesn't show up when searching for wifi hotspots with either of our laptops.

Does straight talk not allow hotspot and tethering or is there something with the phone?

This directly violates the terms and conditions of the agreement with Straight Talk and they can throttle or deny you service because of it.

Whether they will catch on or not is anybody's guess. If the phone is jailbroken, use TetherMe. It has always worked wonders for me.

Oh ok. I figured it was probably not allowed. iOS 6 can't be jailbroken in the 4s yet so no tethering for her.

So does anybody have a definitive answer on if our current settings work with iOS6? I would like to update but not yet if there is no known settings for MMS to work.
