Anybody in NYC using this?

Also, what's this deal with "refilling" the phone? Meaning, if you want another month, you have to purchase another 30 days each time? Or is the refill something else entirely?

I am in NYC and just ordered my SIM. Should get here Saturday. So can't comment on experience yet, but I'm hopeful. The 'refill' thing is for the plan, so yes every 30 days you have to add another $45 30 day plan to keep going. I think they have options to buy like 6 months in advance at a discount rate, but I opted for the month-by-month until I can confirm how solid it is.

Oh - question for those who have ported their old # to Straight Talk service: when do you port the number? After you get the SIM and are activating it? Did you encounter any trouble from your former provider? I am porting my old # from my current coverage with T-Mobile...Straight talk says something on their site about how if there is 'trouble' with the provider there can be up to a 7 day delay...? Anyone experience anything like this?

Yes it is true, Straight Talk "Unlimited" Data is not really so. And they will not specify or tell you what their limits are. But if you go over, you will get a warning and then they just cancel your account -- and no refunds, either.

Are you serious? They cancel your whole account? Has this happened to you? I'm tempted to download something to get my limit over 2 GB to see what actually happens. No one has my new number anyway...

What I meant was that they seemed to be suggesting that the type of data you use is restricted. For example, that you can't browse the web AT ALL. I was just trying to point out that I think the restriction is how much data you use, not how you use it. So of course you could use up 2GB by browsing, streaming, tethering, whatever. I was just saying that you CAN browse and do normal data functions...up to the limit, which is the real restriction.

Gotcha.

to get mms working u need to use 3g or wifi ?

Yes, you either need to have cellular data enabled, be that GPRS, EDGE, or 3G.

Please let us know how it goes!

Ok, I just got my micro SIM right now from fed ex. I'm so happy, reading the instructions on how to activate and port number. I'm in Miami if anything when I sucessfully activate, I'll keep everyone posted.

Awesome, please do post your experience. Was the # porting smooth? Service seem good? Good luck!

Thank you, I called the customer service number (855) 222-2355 and after like 3 mts. I was able to speak with someone. The gentleman was very nice, he walked me through the process and I'm already on the home network and have my APN settings working, except for MMS until the untethered jailbreak for 5.1 is release (that is an iPhone limitation, not network).

I will keep you posted about other things, I think I was charged twice, one in my debit card and another on my credit card. I will have to call back the customer service number.

I guess the best thing I could have done was to call it in instead of doing it all online. At first I had regrets because I tough the guy in the phone system was going to mess up with some number but then looking at how long it has taken other people, I made the right choice.

I still don't have MMS because I'm on 5.1 but we are all waiting for the untethered jailbreak for 5.1 and it will arrive soon.

Thank you guys.

These are the types of speeds I'm getting.

Doesn't the APN numbers work to activate MMS? It's in the earlier pages of this thread.

Or is that solution not working anymore?

Also, any NY users can chime more about the service?

No, it doesn't, the only way is to jailbreak it based on what other users have stated. I'm trying to get working the iphone configuration utility to make those MMS changes and actually create a straight talk profile with the MMS settings built in, but my netframe 4.0 was getting in the way from making the program work. I believe this could be a work around.

Ok I found a solution on how to set up MMS without jailbreaking. The process is based on a video I saw on youtube recently in which you have to swap a tmobile or simple mobile SIM into the iphone (hot swap) while the phone is on up and running and the cellular network settings suddently appear for a brief time before the iphone asks you to activate the phone via the itunes, or wi-fie method.

I had a couple of spare tmobile SIMs and it occured to me and bamm, I got it working, I was able to change the settings and after I did, I swapped back my straight talk SIM and I was able to send MMS msg to my wife's iphone running on H2O, I have to go check her iphone to see if the pictures are there :) if they are, it works and everyone here can do the same thing.

Ok I got it and it works confirmed. Find a tmobile SIM, hot swap it, "cellular data network" will appear, put back the ST SIM, make the proper mms changes and hit back, where "cellular data network" will once again disappear it works without jail breaking on 5.1.

I have done it repeatedly to make sure it works, and it does work. I would recommend the MMS Max Message Size: to leave it blank because it worked for me :)

note: where it reads "No Service" it is when I had temporarily the tmobile SIM inserted in order to make "cellular data network" appear, then swapped back to the ST SIM and start making the changes.

Sweet, thanks for sharing your experience. I am porting from a t-mobile phone/number so I should have my old tmo SIM to use for this fix and will definitely try it.

Also think I might try activating over the phone after reading how quick it was for you. Congrats!

Unlockit.co.nz didn't work? I don't think you have to be jail broken to use it. That's what I used.

Please note that this trick only appears to work with the 4S, no other iPhone.

Thank you for clarifying, yes I have an iPhone 4S so I don't know if this will work with other models to get MMS to work.

You welcome and yes call over the phone, to do the activation process. Also with the inactivated tmobile SIM you will be able to apply the MMS fix :) good luck and let us know how it works out.

Hmm, well after reading the last few posts, it seems the tmobile SIM trick may not work for me. I will be using an iphone 4, without the s :-/

But does that unlockr site make the mms work? Or is it just to fix the apns for data?

Unlockit.co.nz also installs the APN and proxy for MMS.
