The untethered JB 5.1 should work then, just install that app called: tether me or some other similar Cydia app to make the proper MMS setting changes.

Question: On their website, they seem to differentiate between ATT and Tmobile activation.

If I have an unlocked iPhone, I assume I'd go with ATT to get the micro SIM right? (I have a Tmo number but want to get a new number anyway).

Get the AT&T compatible SIM because it will give you the 3G access, the iPhones support only 850/1900 MHz 3G frequency from AT&T and tmobile compatible 3G is 1700Mhz which the iPhones will not support (you'll be stuck with EDGE).

Well I bought an iPhone 4, ported my number over from Virgin Mobile a few week ago and it has been great. Full signal at work where there was marginal signal at best before.

I used unlockit and I had MMS in the beginning, but now I can only send pics to my iPhone only contacts..

Looks like the T-Mobile swap trick won't work for me, should I just jailbreak untethered 5.1 then to restore MMS?

Is there an untethered jailbreak for 5.1?

Good call. Also the Tmobile sim wouldn't fit the unlocked iPhone micro sim slot anyway.

Or since unlockit worked at the beginning, try it again?

I don't think there's an untethered jailbreak for 5.1, and it's very annoying to have to tether just to reboot your iPhone.

Activate MMS on iPhone 4 w/o jailbreak!

Excellent news! It is now possible to activate MMS capabilities on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 without jailbreaking.

Thanks to gillham over at HowardForums

I had tried it a few days ago with no success, but with additional testing, was able to get it to work.:)

Question: is anyone using StraightTalk that was on Tmobile prior? If so, can you comment on whether ST is better than Tmo? In terms of call quality and data?

You know I actually learned about this via the youtube video I saw here and on my very first post, I did state so but I'm sorry I didn't provide the video tutorial here ==> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9wU8J24RA4&feature=my_favorites&list=FLJZUvSCpSGql5vNBv6el7QA

Hi folks

sorry i haven't been posting for a while. Busy busy busy here in NYC. Well I been happy with my ST iphone 3G. Yes I did the NZ unlockit so i can use ST. when it ask you to pick . Pick ATT MVNO, not ATT ok. Also the MMS fix for older Iphone use the "TetherME APN" and you will be running MMS in a heartbeat.

I am in my first week of ST, after being on tmobile for years. Have been in CA, though I live in NY, so can't comment on my usual NY coverage until I get back next week. But call quality and reception has been excellent so far. Pretty much as good or better signal than I had on TMO. Only 'drawback' vs. TMO is on TMO I had 4g (hspa+) so data was a little faster, but 3g data on ST ATT micro sim card is not too shabby, totally usable.

And fwiw, I'm becoming less worried about the data restrictions with each day of use. I'm on my 4th day of service, and have been using the phone normally (although connected to wifi at home), and have only used about 120MB in those 4 days.

Data usage

I've racked up just 1 GB of cellular data usage, and I'll need to load more "time" on the SIM card on the 11th of April. I'm tempted to try downloading something to see what happens if I go over 2 GB.

Nothing will happen.

Went wayyy over myself.

How much over? Someone back at the beginning of this thread said you get your account cancelled after you go over 2 GB. I thought that was bogus, because he didn't offer any proof, and why would they cancel your whole account if you went over? Sure, maybe they'll throttle, but cancel it?

There is definitely valid concern over that, and it has happened to some people.

I tested it and used 4-5GB, with no throttling or cut off.

However, I wouldn't overdo it, as your mileage may vary!

Around a year ago I was cut off after about 6GB of usage on my iPad. That was me intentionally abusing it to see what I can get away with. At that time, you had to buy a specific phone with an unlocked SIM for it to work in other phones. Don't know what has changed since then.

Will the hotspot feature work with ST like it works on AT&T? If so I may consider switching to this.

No, but you can activate it by Jailbreaking and using TetherMe or another tethering app.

Be advised though that the terms of ST prohibit tethering.

And as far as I can see, this does not work on the 3GS. I have TetherMe installed, and I can do personal hotspot via Bluetooth and USB, but not wifi. That might only work with iPhone 4 and up.

Here's What I know about Straight Talk, I used it while back When I was attending school in Michigan, Back in early 2011 and I had to do it the hard way (buy a Nokia E71 and then cut the sim and put into iPhone 4)

Here is what worked:
- $45 Unlimited Plan
- Text/MMS (Set-up MMS via TetherMe...)
- Internet at pretty good speeds on 3G (I went 4 months with approx 1.5GB and on my 5th month I got a call about going over as I was travelling to Dallas and used 2.5GB total most of it in Dallas, TX.....so new customers be aware! after few months they will not tolerate your high data usage most likely but also depends on what area you live in as in areas where network is more congested they will cut you or give you a notice. My internet usage included browsing, downloading apps, streaming music, email, Tethering my laptop and just about everything you can do on the iPhone)
- I was also able to use HotSpot feature without any special instructions or setup....

Overall it is amazing and I had no complaints with Straight Talk and its service for $45/Month I was more than happy and honestly don't abuse the service because no one has a better deal for us Apple fans! and Soon ill be returning to the states and this time ill be enjoying my iPhone 4S (Factory Unlocked) on Straight Talk in Atlanta and with a official Micro SIM:D

PS I sold my E71 a little before I left the states/en route to Canada:)

This sounds really interesting!! I just may switch.... I could sell my iPhone 4S on iPhone 5 launch day and pay the fee.....

The 2GB limit scares me.... I've changed a bit and now I got my unlimited usage down to 3-4GB.....

You mean pay the early termination fee? Or is your contract period already over?

Anyone try using WhatsApp for MMS to other other smartphones. Almost everyone I know that wasn't using it I have got them to use it and now that pretty much all we use for all txt'n/MMS. I'm just going out on a limb here as no1 I know uses ST although I have a SIM just haven't activated it just yet.

Satmam1989 post#220 that is a wonderful story. Yes I agree with you that it doesn't get any better for us Apple iPhone users with ST. I switched from AT&T and I'm very happy and don't plan to abuse the service either. I usually did about 1.8GB per month on previous unlimited data on AT&T but I just couldn't take a hit of almost $100 per month.
