Apple could run this very same ad with one minor change at the end. A simple tag line that says "Dell support, always there for you 24/7. Because you're going to NEED them. Count on it."

Exactly. That and not needing advice on how to get rid of spyware, spam and virii. Advice on why hardware additions won't work, or advice on why Windows applications like IE are so inferior to apps like Firefox. (Cause Safari isn't available for Windows users.)

At the same time they should tighten quality control and reduce hardware problems as much as possible so that it matchs the quality of the software.
The less there is to complain about the better the product will be.

Listen to the posters talking about TV

This will be the year of HD for Apple. HDTV.

It will happen at the perfect moment in time, in a well-executed manner, and Apple will make a killing.

Only if it works, though, and well.

A bad Apple consumer product will damn the company to the three-percenters they are now.

A good one will rewrite the history of moderately expensive electronic devices.

Enjoy.

It probably will have no or limited expandability. I'm guessing 1 or 2 slots for RAM and you can replace the HD if you want. It's going ot be the ipod of computers... simple, to the point and AFFORDABLE... Right at the same price point of the ipod. People buying htis computer are going to do music, surf the web and do email... maybe handle some basic imovie stuff. A G5 will do all of this no problem. Maybe they'll even put TV out..... or build tv out into airport express. 802.11g is fast enough to do acceptable quality video, right?

which is all i really need to do since apparently my lowly g3 ibook isn't super enough to run idvd effectively (encoding) and when i download a couple GBs of something, my lowly 20GB HD goes all aflutter with "low application memory" issues. this is something i can commit a small amount of cash to, satisfy the few problems i'm currently experiencing without rolling all huge like you rich DP G5 and G4 PB users.

not everybody, just "switchers" and even then, those who already have monitors, crt or lcd

Since I quoted the guy it should have been clear that I was referring to "switchers" just as he was. I suppose I should write more pedantically? :)

Yes, I do. I'm doing quite well actually, and at a school that is considered to be quite difficult. I only game on my free time, and then only when I have nothing to do with my friends or outside (I'm a fan of exercise and the like).

Much-maligned macosrumors had this back in April

I've often wondered by macosrumors.com gets bashed so often in forums at various other Mac rumor sites when it appears that they had tidbits of this back in April that now appear likely to be quite accurate.

http://www.macosrumors.com/42704L.php

Regarding the "iMac Mini," that compact/portable/headless desktop Mac we've been talking so much about lately: we've been getting a lot of interesting new recon on that front. Nearly all of it is long-term, with product not shipping until sometime next year.

http://macosrumors.com/42504A2.php

The latest iteration of these rumors comes in the form of the "iMac Mini," a super-compact rectangular computer in the Mini-ITX form factor. It would be only about half the size of a G4 Cube, with soldered-in graphics, no internal expansion slots, a 2.5-inch (laptop size) hard disk, and a mid-range G5 processor. We'll get into more details of the iMac Mini rumor soon, but know that the inexpensive, ultraportable, headless desktop Mac isn't an impossible dream.

It's not my intention to pit rumor site against rumor site (I love them all and I think there's plenty of room for more) but I've asked here before and wonder still. Macosrumors seems to have a few real connections into some insider info, and they get dumped on fairly regularly. I don't get it.

It may not lead on Rumors but it leads in the community department as far as I am concerned. That, (I feel imo) in the long term is going to lead to some resentment isn't it? the goal of a website is to attract people and Apple is not yet big enough to survive on rumors alone, for many websites. By far, I have found that this Mac Community is a great group of people and I hope that is expanded upon. Excuse my candor, it is just an opinion.

Name Game

Apple can do it this way. Get rid of the "e" originally for "education" eMac and welcome the "e" for "entry" or "easy" (on the wallet) eMac.

Actually, that's a point...

Actually, that's a point. Apple are still in the CRT display market with the eMac, so getting the CRT mounted into an 'ordinary' chassis (albeit a very nice-looking 'ordinary' chassis ;)) shouldn't be too difficult either. The advantage of selling an entry-level device, but also being able to offer the complete solution. They could offer the CRT only with this new device, as one of the available configurations (like they do with the other lines).

Of course, all this assumes there will be a new device. I agree ThinkSecret has a solid track record, but keep in mind this was posted on December 28. I could see this as being Steve's annual rumourmonger 'jab' at MWSF if no such device is under consideration.

1 - Thank goodness its Christmas holidays, else I would have been fired by now for reading this monster thread for hours and hours. There are some really witty posts knocking about.

2 - As a random Brit, I really dont get all the mirth over iCabod. Not wishing to sound like Margo Leadbetter from the Good Life (classic British comedy show character) but What's so funny? Please explain the joke.:(

3 - Nobody mentioned the connection between the rumoured mini Mac and the mini Apple Stores recently opening up. Small is beautiful and all that...

4 - I'll still get one the moment it is available for order, even though it isnt cutting edge. For all those people whittering about oh it should be 1.5 or 1.7GHz, forget the hang-ups. For the vast vast majority of normal folk, the processor speed difference is unimportant, its the RAM that makes a machine fly with iLife. So, a bog standard 1.25GHz G4 with options for upping to 1GB of RAM would kill my Powerbook, which, even as an 867MHz with 768MB RAM and a really slow hard drive is a monster machine that multitasks like a champ and is the envy of all the "normal" PC users I know who are into music and photos and web design. And I will have access at work to a G5 Powermac if I need to do any real crunching, so Im looking forward to the announcements if they come.

The Rumors are Grand...

...if they are true. Macrumors is populated by so many übergeeks... hold on to your jockstraps mini–gents!

Let us see what happens then we can go for blood, okay?

For the record: this will not give Apple a market share bump if true. Americans (ergo the rest of the world, SADLY) are too Stupid and Ignorant to ignore what they have been programmed with: and that's Windows. Work=Salary=Money to Spend @ Home=Windows PC. Now, don't give me the whole "but my 'fam uses Mac and Loves it Spiel." Of course they do, or you would not be posting on a Mac site, so spare me. What can we look forward to? Adoration of Apple on this site and stories and columns by PC writers about... oh, never mind, you should know the drill..

Who in these forums used the very first version of Aldus PageMaker to create a publication? Exactly. You upstarts know nothing...

The best value for price Mac I have ever owned was an SE 30. Ask anyone you young whipper snappers. And what do you want for 499? Stop whining, I paid 2100 for my SE 30. And I can assure you that the new Mac can handle anything that the SE 30 could handle at the time CREATIVITY-wise. Who do you guys are, freakin' Ansel Adams prototypes who are allergic to the dark? Macrumors has gone down hill... we really need a High School Goody Good version or a College Up All Night Version. I can see why Arn left...

Considering everyone wants a tablet or a PDA, this could be it...
minus the screen... and battery...

Either way, a G5 iMac for moi.

It's going to be $599, not $499...

The high-end iPod (60GB iPod Photo) costs $599.

There is no way Apple Marketing would make the mistake of releasing a Macintosh that costs less than an iPod.

So it's pretty clear that the $499 rumor is bogus, and that the actual price will be closer to $599. Wouldn't it be an interesting marketing ploy if for the same cost as the most expensive iPod you could buy the least expensive Macintosh?

Informal poll of Windoze using friends...

I talked to two friends at work about the new low cost Mac. They have tolerated my Mac evangelism for nearly 8 years now and I had both on the verge of getting a Mac at various points throughout that time. However, never did one pull the trigger. They each were very interested in the thought of a low cost Mac for the purpose of basic web browsing, e-mail and most importantly, living the iLife! I hope Apple markets this new Mac (if it is indeed coming that is) around the power of iLife. The emphasis on computer advertising has always been on the power of the hardware, when without excellent software, fast hardware is useless. The Apps of iLife are truly wonderful. They are intuitive, seamless, and empowering. It is through iLife that I personally sell the benefits of the Mac life.

Is this a coincidence?

My brother constructed a PC for my mom several years ago, loading it with Windows ME. It's so unstable she spends hours on the phone a month with him running Scan Disk, reverting to a previous day's system, and so on.

I started looking at used iMacs (G3) and eMacs yesterday. I thought about resurrecting my powerless Pismo laptop (400 MHz) with an $80 power supply--just so she could run OS X and do her web surfing and camera downloads without all the Windows hassles.

Returning from my browsing trip, I went online and found this rumor. This would be a perfect machine at a good price point for her. She's got a wonderful monitor and doesn't need to buy an eMac with a so-so monitor. And the size would be a perfect form factor for her cramped corner poker table on which her PC and monitor currently sit.

Go Apple go!

I've given up.

I showed some of the concept drawings and renderings to my coworkers and friends yesterday (who also put up with my Mac evangelism) and it met with the usual comments:

"I can buy a Dell for that much."

"I can build my own for that much."

"I'll have to buy software for it."

"It's still too expensive."

I'm tired of trying. Let people keep using their trash winblows machines. I'll let Macintosh be my little secret.

Morons.

it's gonna be...

a G5. 1.5ghz. 512mb Ram
THE WINDOWS KILLER
us$599

if you want a screen,
15"lcd $299

YEAHHHHH!!! :D
c'mon steve, make it so.

the so called insider reports -- that's just misinformation seeded to employees by apple execs

after going through the 27 pages of posts (and that's just on this site) i am going delirious

Relax and get them to Add to their computer experience, not switch.

At this price, they can keep their crashing PCs and their new ultra stable Mac side by side linked to the same monitor, and without buying a red cent worth of new Apple software get to do all their multimedia stuff, surf and listen to music on the Mac and play games or use whatever priceless software it is they cant afford to replace on their PC. One day it will dawn on them that they are using their Macs quite a lot, and the switch will be of their choice, not yours.

wow, this is great news - I think steve realises all us Mac-Geek types are gonna go and buy these things straight away for home servers.

I know I definitely will. I would love to be able to use things like Netboot /fileservers at home without having to buy a used PM from eBay. This could be the answer!

give it some funky green and blue lights like the xServe and we're sorted :D

I cant wait for the Stevenote - does anyone know if it's gonna be streamed live to Apple stores? I hope they show it in london.. :D :)

Apple would be smart to drop prices of their LCD line or offer a smaller cheaper LCD option or else everyone buying this Sub $600 mac will get some other brand of LCD to use with this cheap mac. Imagine how many monitors Apple could sell if this sub $600 Mac takes off. Perhaps Apple should also offer a Sub $500 17" LCD as an option with this machine or if not drop the price of a 20" Cinema Display to under $1000. Apple's cheapest display offering is at $1299 and I doubt anyone would spend that much too complement a Sub $600 box. If Apple does not have an affordable monitor offering all those possible sales will be lost to competitors.
