It amazes me that Apple continues to charge exorbitant amounts of money for their RAM, when the market prices are so much lower. I find it difficult to believe that someone who is even a marginally astute shopper would pay the prices they have for RAM.

I don't know what it's like Down Under, but a 1G RAM module for a MBP is under $USD 30 these days.

Yep, 1GB is that cheap in Aus and yes I agree - Apple needs to see that lower prices overall means greater marketshare which equals greater exposure which then equals more revenue. Its better to make money that way than to suck as much out of its customers as it can...

The new Macbook Pros support 4GB of RAM. That is any 2.2 or 2.4ghz MBP will fully support 2-2GB sticks.

Anything before that will only recognize 3.3GB of the 4GB.

Just as an aside to this question, will the 2,1 generation MBPs show that they recognize 4GB, but only use 3.3, or will they show a hard 3.3 in the "About This Mac" and Apple System Profiler.

I simply ask, as I've got 4GB in my 2.33GHz 17" 2,1 MacBook Pro (budget approved for Penryn upgrade whenever the hell they'll get here) and it shows all four.

Now launch Activity Monitor and go to the memory section, now see what it says ;)

Just checked...

I must be missing something. Everything I've seen shows the full 4GB...
You are. Add your 'Free' and 'Used' together what do you get? Ok, I'll tell you, 2.99GB. Now, if you look at my 4GB in my SR notebook and you add the 'Free' and 'Used' you will see nearly 4GB. You see, the OS sees all 4GB of your memory but the CHIPSET can not make use of it.
