"Perhaps an agreement has now been reached, although this would be all the more surprising given that both Apple and Disney are about to go head to head with their own rival streaming services."

You misunderstand the nature of their relationship, and what Apple is trying to accomplish with their streaming service. Apple and Disney aren't "going head to head." Disney's CEO, Bob Iger, sits on Apple's Board of Directors and intimately understands Apple. Cook and Iger see their businesses as complementary. That's why, unlike Netflix, Disney agreed to have a channel on Apple TV and give Apple a cut. Indeed, don't be surprised if Apple announces a bundle with Disney today.;)

Moreover, you're making the mistake people make over and over that in order for Apple to succeed, others must fail. When Jobs came back to Apple he shared his epiphany that Apple had to realize that it wasn't necessary for Microsoft to fail for Apple to succeed. Not understanding this is why so many pundits are consistently wrong in their predictions. They think that Apple has to be #1 in sales of a product to be successful, e.g., sale of phones, most music subscribers, most smart speakers sold, etc., when that's never Apple's goal. No, Apple TV Plus is all about adding value and hence some revenue to the Apple ecosystem, not being the most watched or beating Disney, etc.

Disney also wanted to build in VHS Playback Simulation whereby the quality of the movie would decrease every time it was watched so that parents of children would need to pay for multiple copies
Pretty sleazy tactic if that's true, and that did happen to me a lot when I was a kid, makes total sense now ;-)

Disney has been dragging it's heels on this, wanting to charge users 25$ for 4k movies but Apple wouldn't allow a price go above 19.99. Every company has been selling 4k for 19.99 and Disney was being greedy.
It's funny that Apple of all people takes a stand on movie pricing, when they overprice everything else they sell.

Hoping it will be soft announced. Not really keynote worthy for Tim to say “we stopped bitch fighting with Disney.“ on stage.
Lol that be funny if he said it liked that. I thought they would have said it at the end of the Apple TV announcement quickly. But if they do a soft announcement that works :)

Hahah me too. I’d guess if it’s going to happen it would be next week with iOS 13 launch.

Really hope so! I was excited about this and then it disappeared. It makes sense that it wouldn’t be announced at an apple event, however this is something that really shouldn’t be missing given how closely these companies have worked together in the past.

As of today 9/22/19, these are in TV app as 4K! Also, the same for Dark Phoenix!

Spider-Man far from home is a Sony film so always was 4K same as the last one. Dark Phoenix is a Fox film (though Disney now own fox, it’s separate).

Can you confirm any Disney films are 4K?

Just checked and it’s still HD :(

oh darn, didn’t realize just thinking all Marvel based content would be exempted; guess not! Thanks for the extra detail.

How has this still never happened? I'm so sick of my Disney movies (even the one's I've purchased in 4K either on disc or from other retailers) are limited to HD on iTunes. It's ridiculous. Get with the times, Disney!

I doubt it will ever happen now with 4K Disney movies on Disney Plus.

Disney have absolutely no reason to move on their policy of no free upgrades, so it'll only move if Apple decide to charge money for them. At which point all the other studios would do the same.

It's not about "free upgrades," it's about being able to freaking buy movies in 4K.

Disney sells 4K movies on every other VOD retailer except for iTunes. This has nothing to do with Disney+. That's a different market.

And they charge more for them on every other platform. Which Apple won’t allow as they have a policy of free 4k updates. And D+ has everything to do with it. Their pushing people to that platform.

Disney really don’t care at this point. They’re not hurting because they’re not giving away free 4K upgrades to iTunes users.

Your choices for 4K Disney films are - Buy individually on another streaming service that allows them to charge more. The physical 4K UHD discs which are 25 a pop. Or have all Disney films including future ones in 4K for 5.99 a month in perpetuity.

That’s it. You can be mad as all hell but it won’t change anything.

Personally I get Disney+ free on o2 so it’s brilliant.

Again, it doesn't have anything to do with Disney+. That's a streaming market, not a VOD market. Movies that aren't even on Disney+ (and never will come to Disney+) are affected too. Such as The Prestige. Disney owns the US distribution of that film, and that's why it's not in 4K on iTunes. It's available in 4K everywhere else though, including iTunes in non-US territories. That movie is never coming to Disney+. Even if you buy it in 4K on other services, it doesn't show up in 4K on iTunes even when linked to Movies Anywhere. And even if you buy the movie on physical UHD Blu-ray, it's not available in 4K on iTunes once redeemed. It's absolutely ridiculous. If I buy it physically in 4K, with a 4K redemption code, then WHY on earth is it not 4K?? It's a bait and switch. It's dishonest and immoral. Disney needs to allow this. Or Apple needs to allow them to sell movies in 4K without free upgrades. Something needs to happen. This bullcrap needs to stop.

Again, it’s everything to do with it.

If you have it on 4k disc then I don’t understand why you’re so upset? You can’t be this angry just because you want the option to buy a particular 4K movie you already have on iTunes?

And even if you are, raging on a forum really isn’t going to change things. it’s just the way things are right now.

I just checked and I own the Prestige on iTunes in 4K here in the UK. Maybe get yourself an iTunes account in a different territory?

I get it. I wish UK had Jon Wick in 4K. We don’t. But every other iTunes territory does. We don’t have The Fifth Element on iTunes at all here in the UK. By all accounts that’s a must own 4K title.

Do these things bug me? Yes. Do I lose sleep over them. No. It with either eventually happen or it won’t. Either way it’s not getting worked up about something you can’t change.

That's the one part I agree with. If you already paid 4K pricing, why aren't you able to play it through Apple in 4K. I can understand the buying it in HD and not getting a free upgrade to 4K.
