Just received my Dell 2415q 4k monitor. I plugged it in to my MBPr 13" Late 2013) using the supplied display port to mini display port cable via thunderbolt 2 port. Opened up Switch ResX and entered a custom resolution of 450 pixel clock, and set the resolution to 3840x2160. saved and rebooted. I'm pretty stoked that this worked, my little MBP is driving this new monitor at HDPI 1080p @ 51Mz.

Thanks! I think I am just going to wait for Broadwell refresh of MacBooks, before investing in 4K screen. Broadwell U-series CPUs support full 3840x2160 @ 60Hz, so hopefully it will work out of the box and without all the hackery.

Yeah, I think this is a good call! Maybe even wait for skylake, also coming out next year.

Hello Stempsons,
it´s very interesting for me what you say - but I think you ment the Dell UP2414Q monitor ? I can´t find any DELL 2415Q...maybe you mean Dell P2715Q ?
Could you tell me how stable your Macbook 13" Retina works with the Switch ResX and how it perfoms with 50Hz ? Is there much difference on mouse and scrolling movements compared to the original Retina Display ?
What about scaling ? Are letters and symbols very small now ? Can you post a photo of the desktop display on your Dell Monitor with that configuration ?

Thanks in advance for your help !
Best regards,
Daniel

Ok Question:
Early 2013 13" rMBP on the Sam' 28" ud590d using minidisplay port to displayport shouldn't it be able to at least display 2560x1440 on this display at least giving me a similar look and display as my 27" iMac?
What's the most I will be able to get from my Early 2013 13" rMBP using built in settings and the above cables?

If I cant event get equiv to my iMac this setup is useless to me and I should just upgrade my laptop.

Appreciate any help fellas

When mirroring, the highest resolution you can set throughout the entire chain is the resolution of the lowest-res display in the chain.

During mirroring, only a single resolution can be used.

For instance, a 13" rMBP connected to a 2560x1440 display can only run at 2560x1440 on both displays during mirroring, since the 2560x1440 is the lowest resolution monitor in the chain.

A late-2013 13" rMBP connected to a 4K display can only run at 2560x1600 on both displays during mirroring, since the display of the 13" is the lowest in the chain.

If you want to run every monitor in the chain at their native resolutions, disable mirroring or use clamshell mode.

It's the dell 2415q, and the monitor works at 50Hz just fine on the macbook pro 13" retina. on the mac mini (2014) with iris 5100, it works at a slightly lower refresh rate. 45-48Hz is stable, but anything more than that and the screen will flicker or go black.

From what I've read, the 2414q should work...At least that's what most guys were using with Mavericks and SwitchResX. I could be mistaken though...

Could you provide links? People in this thread (posts #71,#75 and 76) claim the Switcresx trick does not work on UP2414Q.

If it is true i have to send back and get your P2415Q. How is it for photographic use?

Thanks

Got the 2415q and my initial impressions:
It indeed has 4k pixels.
It is overall, though, a value monitor. I'd even call it cheap quality.

Plasticky, light bleed, and the panel is loose and even a bit somehow physically recessed on the upper right.

The antiglare coating is very noticeable. Also only 1920x1080p resolutions look acceptable, or the native full resolution. 2560x1440p looks pretty bad.

I was "I must have an IPS screen at all costs."
I regret that choice because just like there can be some good TN screens, there are some cheap IPS screens.

I would absolutely go see the 4k monitor in person first before buying next time. (we don't have a return policy here for pure buyer's remorse) Given the price point, I would have been better served with a U2412m

Not off the top of my head. I researched these monitors for months before buying one, and almost pulled the trigger myself on the 2414q. as far as photography, the 4k display works nice, since you can see your images at almost 100%.

Thanks, I will have the verdict tomorrow but have no hope...

Do you use it with a Mac Mini? Are you able to squeeze out 52 or 48hz?

on the mac mini i5 2.8 with iris i can safely run it at 47Hz. i had it running at 51 hz for a minute, but then began having black screen issues and flickering. i dialed it back, and it's stable now.

This is all very odd.
I have the 2414q. My work laptop has an inferior CPU/GPU (i5-4310U) to the 13" Mac and has no issue running 60Hz@3840x2160

Have any of you tried in bootcamp?

Nope. Its the problem with this screen. It wont accept custom hz. From what I heard only samsung that work.

I got the same Dell UP2414Q monitor and I cannot even enable DP1.2, the screen goes black when I enable it. Is it the same with yours?

I"ve just ordered Dell P2415Q after reading of your post and today i've got it - it works perfectly with these settings, 4k picture quality is amazing with 51Hz. Just like my retina 13" but much bigger.

Thanks!

How are the UI elements, fonts size for this 4k monitor? Not too small? Or does OS X do some kind of scaling?

OS X does perfect scaling! I did screenshot, maybe it helps.

P. S. Update. Yosemite OS X works terrible with this monitor and SwitchResX - resolution is not stable and reset after each OS restart. Switched back to Mavericks.

Stempsons, I have the same MBPr & the same Dell 2415q, using the same cable. However, it goes black after choosing the custom resolution 3840x2160x450PixClock@51Hz. Works only at 1080p HiDPI and 30 Hz :( .Could you, please, make the screenshots of settings in Switch ResX?

UPD. Solution: MST>Off

4K on RMB pro 13" (late 2013)

I have two questions:

1) 4K at 50hz is good?
I read someone talking about bad scrolling & zoom.

2) If 50hz is ok, then using with LG 4K Monitor 31MU97-B?
Anyone used this with 13" rMBP?

Many thanks!!!!!

That's a short list? lol

This thread is clearly for the 13" model, which is very, very different than the 15 rMBP. Please make a new thread.

1) 51Hz works perfectly on OS X Mavericks, but not perfect on Yosemite. I downgraded to Mavericks because of Wi-Fi issues, but also found that P2415Q sometimes flickering for left Notification view and for heavy sites with visual effects. So I'm happy on Mavericks for many reasons - stable wi-fi, stable 4K monitor and fast computer.

Also SwitchResX doesn't work stable on Yosemite - sometimes it cannot switch to 51Hz mode (black screen), some time proper scaling doesn't work... I don't have such problems with Mavericks
