I got a MBP 2015 but I cannot get 60hz on my Dell UP2414Q (and Yes, I enabled DP1.2), anyone got any idea?

I don't know the answer but am interested also. It looks like you can get UHD at 3840x2160 and not 4096x2160. The hd 6100 specs show 3840x2160 at 60hz. I hope the mbr 13 can go to 4092.

I am thinking about buying a 2015 Samsung 4K TV this year and a new 2015 MacBook Pro.

Should I, in theory, be able to output to this 4K TV at 60Hz with 3840x2160 resolution from the 2015 MacBook Pro (assuming the TV accepts 60Hz input)? Or is 60Hz only going to work with a computer monitor?

Just received my Dell 2415q 4k monitor. I plugged it in to my MBPr 13" Late 2013) using the supplied display port to mini display port cable via thunderbolt 2 port. Opened up Switch ResX and entered a custom resolution of 450 pixel clock, and set the resolution to 3840x2160. saved and rebooted. I'm pretty stoked that this worked, my little MBP is driving this new monitor at HDPI 1080p @ 51Mz.

Exactly right, works as you say. I have MBPr mid 2014 on P2415Q, using the supplied cable and Switchresx, set the resolution and pixel clock, restart and that's it. Surely need to pay and register Switchresx also, but it's fine. 24 inch is just the right size to run HiDPI 1080p (2160).

It will work, but only over mDP/DP and not HDMI.

Switchresx isn't needed for the Broadwell rMBPs, since these models can support 4K/60Hz right out of the box.

Trouble freezing

Sorry for the late reply, a few things

- 52 Hz, 4K is ONLY possible over Thunderbolt 2/Displayport, not HDMI
- I'm using this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7RJQPY
- To achieve 52 Hz, you need to set a custom resolution with the settings in the attached file in switchesX. Make sure that you're getting a 450 MHz pixel clock. Input the settings and restart!

Hi - Thanks for sharing this, I didn't think it would be possible to get anything above 30hz on my 4K tv with my rMBP 13" late 2013 model. You have given me hope.

I followed the instructions you laid out in your posts, did everything in SwithResX, then rebooted. Once I came back into my desktop, I went into System Preference -> Display and the selected 52hz in the drop down menu. After I do this my my display freezes, and it remains frozen until I reboot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this?

The TV I'm using is a Samsung UE40HU6900
I'm also using this adapter:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009YCE11E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

You're right - 30hz is unbearable, any help will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I can confirm this works too , on my P2715Q , 51hz is perfect , no need to upgrade to 2015 now just for 60hz.

excellent find.

Would it be much better for us 13in retina MBP owners to just get a 1440p or 1600p monitor vs a 4K monitor instead then? The retina display resolution is so much nicer than my 1080p monitor that I feel the need to at least get "retina" level resolution but I don't want to sacraifice performance with a 4K monitor.

This would be a nice option for 13" users who don't want to go 4K yet http://www.lg.com/uk/ultrawide/UM95.m

I get 4K at 30Hz on my late 2012 rMBP 13" with a Dell P2715Q, and I find the refresh rate quite acceptable. I see some jitter when moving windows quickly, but I'm not playing games etc., and the 4K resolution is much clearer than a scaled resolution at 60Hz.

I'm using the same monitor with a Surface Pro 3 i5 at 4K/30Hz and love the clarity and screen real estate.

Here is my 2015 - 13" Macbook Pro running 1080p retina? This is on a ASUS pb287q and it looks really good. To me there is no more slow down or choppiness than when I'm running the Macbook Pro by itself. I'm running 60 Hz but I think the video is 30 Hz. I've enjoyed this setup and will keep it to do light photo editing in Pixelmator and general internet browsing. I am on a slow internet connection of 5mb so some of the web delay can be blamed on that.

And here is a picture taken with my iPhone to show that it looks better than the video can show. Actually it looks better than this picture can show but it is closer to what the ASUS really looks like.

Hello everybody,

I have read this forum and purcased an UP2414Q

And it appears that I should have read until the end

I have just assumed that your tweaks works for this particular monitor too.

But I should have read rayGcon and Malandra's messages.

Anyway my system is

Macbook Pro Retina 13" Mid 2014
Dell UP2414Q ( D.P. 1.2 enabled )
OSX Yosemite 10.10.1

And I can't get anything else than 30Hz also, whenever I try your tweaks with SwitchResX I also get a blank screen. Please let me know if any of you succeded to run this one over 30Hz.

Thanks a lot.

Sorry, I am still confused - I was thinking about this exact same setup with a refurb 2014 13" MBP!

It definitely will NOT work?

isn't an HDMI output worse than a mini displayport/thunderbolt output?

according to apple:
https://support.apple.com/kb/SP703

it can only support through the HDMI at 30Hz which sounds like from here and elsewhere that it is really annoying.

I thought I read somewhere, where the Dell UP2414Q, is one of 4 monitors mentioned as an option by Apple for the 2015 MBPs. but can find the link again.

What is the difference between SST and MST?
Seems like its saying the 2014 13" can NOT do 2560x1600 at 60Hz...

the link:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202856

Multi-Stream Transport (MST) Displays
These computers also support multi-stream transport (MST) displays at 60 Hz.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013 and later)
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
Mac Pro (Late 2013)
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)

If you use a 60Hz MST display with the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) or iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), only one additional Thunderbolt display can be supported. Learn more about Thunderbolt ports and displays.

You need to manually configure 4K displays to use MST. Follow the steps below to use the display's built-in controls to enable this feature.

There's your problem, it isn't possible to do 4K @ 60 Hz going from DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI. DisplayPort 1.2 only works with up to HDMI 1.4, which will get you 30 Hz. To get 52 Hz, you'll need a Displayport 1.2 monitor unfortunately. If that TV supports HDMI 2.0, it STILL isn't currently possible to go from Displayport 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 for 4K @ 60 Hz.

Looks great. I'm looking for a 4k display to have "retina" quality on a desktop. Where did you buy it ?

Hello,

how about the new Macbook Pro 13 Inch Retina (2015) which was presented by Apple some hours ago ?
It says it has an IRIS 6100 Graphics card - does this one support 60 Hz "out of the box" with 3840x2160 pixels ?
In the technical data it says it does support that resolution, but it doesn´t say anything about the frequency, except with HDMI, where it is 30 Hz, but I would like to know if it supports the 60 Hz at Thunderbolt port ?

Any ideas / information would be appreciated.

Best regards,
Daniel

I know Ars have said it'll work. I'm surprised no one here with a 2015 rMBP have tested this and report back in this thread. I really wonder if there's any lag as Ars have said there is.
