4S owners, please post some test photos.

Here is a much better video 1080p video uploaded from my PC, i kept having to tap to focus because it obviously didnt know to keep focus on the small branches etc.

Wow! I love Android but the cameras has been part of what has kept me with the iPhone 4. Looks like they have a lot of catching up to do. The 4S pic/recording ability blows away even the SGS II from what I've seen.

Another pic for ya'll

I had read the other day that you can't set the video down to anything but 1080p which stinks. I have no need for 1080p home movies, especially at 200mb/minute on a 16gb phone. a 720p file should look just as good at half that (there's a bit less than half as many pixels in 720p as 1080p). Hopefully Apple changes it in 5.1 or there's a third party camcorder app that offer the image stabilization and resoltion control.

These are looking pretty good.

Also remember that iOS5 added AF/AE lock. So you can tap and hold to have it lock the focus and exposure at a certain distance/level. It can make videos look a ton better if you learn how to use it (As the camera won't constantly be adjusting exposure for what is in the middle of the screen.)

Does anyone know if you can somehow separate the two? It would be nice to have exposure lock only...

Dust in buildings is made of skin cells, hair, fibers etc. So yes it is dust, made of skin flakes. This is relevant how ?

Low light shot. iPhone 4S makes the image look quite a lot brighter than it really is, it makes relatively low light shots look asif they were well exposed, it looks quite nice - but it brings quite a bit of noise with it.

I've quickly edited the file on photobuckets editor to make it closer to the brightness of what it really looked like in real life:

thanks for sharing but you do understand that stuffing 8MP in that small of a sensor is going to come with obvious noise in image.

Very impressive. Only thing thats missing is optical zoom but that would make the phone super thick. Other then that I see no need for my point and shoot. Also like how the autofocus works while shooting video. Even my Canon 7D doesn't do that.

Yes.. of course i understand. The whole reason i bought the phone was because i like photography.

If i want a low noise image, i'll use my SLR on a tripod with low ISO. If i want a respectable picture there and then, i use my Phone.

Two more pictures, photostream is very useful here, they appear straight on my PC, no need to sync and copy them etc :D :

I was tapping to focus because it was struggling to focus on the small branches (Any camera would, they
're not psychic). But yes i think it will autofocus fine in most circumstances.

Can 4S owners take some pics in fluorescent lighting please? Curious if the camera still has the green blob effect in such lighting conditions.

It's still there, kind of. Not a green blob so much but still slightly miscolored corners (A pinky color) if you take a picture of a monitor, white piece of paper etc.

Thanks kmanmx,

Can you please do some indoor pics in ambient light?

Thanks,

Yes. Gimme a few minutes ;)

Apple have clearly decided it is better to raise the ISO/Noise levels and get a well exposed image, then get a badly exposed (under exposed) image with little noise. Infact, the images make the scene look brighter than it really is.

The phone suffers from lens flare badly too, unfortunately. Pictures with bright light shining towards it are a no go, as you can see when i've uploaded the pics.

Tonight when I get home I'm going to test the iP4S and iP4 side by side for some different photos and videos and will post any interesting results.

Is the start up time when launching the camera any quicker?

Over exposed, but that can be good when it is pretty low light like it was, unfortunately, this introduces lots of noise.. as to be expected from a phone camera, or even a moderate point and shoot.

Intense light reflecting off car, phone does not like.

More coming..

This is in the hallway, lit by a few windows

Lounge, curtains closed, pretty dark, illuminated from hallway light and light coming through curtains

Kitchen/Living room, illuminated by... well actually it's pretty obvious :p

[removed, noticed i was in the picture, retaking !]

Better shot of kitchen, lighting from the big glass doors:

Have you tried the same shots with the vaunted HDR mode on?

Nope, i'll give it a go - doubt it'll make a blind bit of difference.

edit: Sun has moved, no longer any reflections.

Here is a picture from a Nikon D80 SLR with a 50mm lens @ F1.8, ISO 320, 1/25th Shutter (Bolded so noone thinks its an IP4S pic :p) - this is correctly exposed and is a good representation of how dark the room in the picture a few posts ago really is.

And yes yes i know.. it's blurred. But that makes a good point. If a SLR on ISO 400 and F1.8 can't get it looking correctly exposed/noise free without a slow shutter speed, what chance does an iPhone have!

Just some photos took quickly to compare, nothing special. No real thought gone into them...
No editing done, just emailed to myself and uploaded to photobucket.
There's a window just 4 foot to the left, blinds closed but they're thin.

I think the conclusion is pretty obvious, in well lit areas the 4S camera is great and can take some very useable shots.

In low light it falls flat on its face for printable quality shots, like 99% of phone cameras and 80% of point and shoots. But they remain good enough to show people casually, i guess.

What's the 1% of phones that shoot printable quality photos in low light?

The focus is pretty fast and there's not much shake going on. Definitely awesome for shots like this. Really nice video.

The wavy effect I saw on the German video really are a turn off though. I'll mostly be using it for stills anyway.
