Haha, totally should have finished seeing the sequence before voting and I wouldn't have assumed there was a parenthesis. :eek:

5+5+5-5+5+5-5+5*0=
5+5+5-5+5+5-5+ (5*0)=
5+5+5-5+5+5-5+0= 15

Unless I miscounted somewhere, I see 7 5s not being multiplied by 0. 5 of them are positive 5 and 2 of them are negative 5.

I voted 15 because that makes sense using PEMDAS and working left to right. Does left to right come into play with calculations? I don't know, grade school math was so long ago. However, puma1552's post below makes sense as well depending upon how you apply PEMDAS if it's not left to right. I don't remember the rule.
You use PEMDAS, but if you have more than one of the functions, you'll simplify whichever is first.
 
Really depends on how you group them.

Let f(x) = (5+5+5-5+5+5-5+5)
and let g(x) = 0

f(x) * g(x) = 5+5+5-5+5+5-5+5 * 0 = 0.



And if f(x) = 5+5+5
and if g(x) = 5+5+5
and h(x) = 5+5

And the problem is asking f(x) - g(x) - h(x) * 0 = f(x) - g(x) = 5+5+5 - (5+5+5) = 0

....grouping really matters.


I answered 15.
 
The answer is 0.

For those of you adding to the equation - you can't arbitrarily put a parenthetical logic when none exist.

It's a vastly different equation if you add any bits to it.

Math logic 101A: When you have addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, you first do * or /, left to right, and then +/-, left to right. makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, left to right, following BODMAS:

  • Brackets
  • Of
  • Division
  • Multiplication
  • Addition
  • Subtraction

It is really simple. You do the multiplication first, and then the addition and subtraction. There is NO parenthesis in the equation and therefore, that does not apply.

Grouping terms according to order of operations reduces to

(5+5+5)-(5+5+5)-[5+(5*0)]
=15-15-5+0
=-5

If you're going to do that, it should be:

(5+5+5)+(-5+5+5)+[-5+(5*0)]
=(15)+(5)+(-5)
=15

I don't disbelieve anyone about the answer they are arriving at.
And I don't disagree with using PEMDAS exactly.

But I'm a literalist.
IOW's if it ain't there it ain't there. And to me
PEMDAS assumes functions that aren't written; And
likewise I say the function has to be written to be used.

Otherwise every equation is open to interpretation.
