I have to say, it's a bold move to drop a phone size that has been the #1 seller and a company's bread and butter go-to product.

Bold. Really bold.

A 5.5" phone means you don't need to buy a tablet. Which means you can just have a powerful desktop at home and a phone when you are traveling.

When you have a 5.5 incher there really is no reason for a tablet to exist. It does everything a tablet does and it can go to all the places where a tablet can't

4.7 is better! i think?

4.7
perfect for gym/working out
perfect for jogging/running
perfect for taking pics
perfect for back pocket and ease of use to carry around for a man

5.5
perfect for movies
perfect for editing pics/viewing
perfect for music/dj apps
perfect for games
perfect for browsing websites and shop
perfect for reading books

i am so so so torn that i cant make up my mind. Most likely i will get 4.7 strictly because if i was able to do things on my nokia, iphone 4 and now iphone 5. i am sure i will be fine with 4.7 with iphone 6. Until i see someone next to me with enjoying movies/videos on the go and playing games on their 5.5.

ok i am confused/torn again.

While I can imagine it, I (personally) would definitely not want it. I think the 5s screen is much too small at 4". 5.5" is THE one for me.

BUT, that said, if there is a market for smaller-screen smart phones, I wish Apple would build for that market too. And note this: one of the reasons Android has had some great smart phone success is because Apple hasn't been competing at these bigger-screen sizes. So Android makers have been able to carve out a profitable business at sizes above 4" partially because Apple has left it to them.

Now Apple is going to encroach on that space. I think that means a LOT of that bigger-screen business for Android is about to dry up, as I suspect many would rather have iOS but couldn't sacrifice the bigger screens. Now they don't have to.

However, Apple is apparently vacating 4" and smaller. So if there is a market that wants a 4" or smaller screen so badly they will NOT buy these bigger-screen iPhones, Android should jump on that hole(s). Thus, if there is still a lot of profitable opportunity down at <= 4" sizes, I would expect a flood of new Androids trying to fill the hole left by Apple leaving the size.

Android already has some phones down in those sizes but I doubt they sell very well. Perhaps this will boost demand for them? Or perhaps it will take a new generation of Androids to stir up demand for the smaller? Or perhaps its just over down at the small end and that's why Apple is leaving it rather than rolling out 3 models of iPhone 6?

Could be even more likely this provokes a knee-jerk reaction from the Android OEMs and we see Android phones go EVEN BIGGER - I hear plenty of people who have Notes and Z Ultras and would prefer even larger 7"+ phones.

Also, I would not be surprised if the 5.5" iPhone ends up being the bigger seller. I've already had 3 people in my office say they wanted the 4.7" but are buying the 5.5" model for the better PPI, camera, and battery life.

I'm getting the 5.5 inch because now I won't need to buy an iPad. I'll have a large iPhone and a MacBook Pro.

Because the market demands it. More and more people are switching to bigger phones and Apple needed to adapt.

I like the smaller form factor, but does the 6P have better specs?

-Higher resolution
-Higher battery life
-Better camera hardware
-Potentially higher RAM?
-Split screen apps

Hey guys,

I've always been struck with questions when I see people carrying around really big phones like the Galaxy Note, and I see a lot of people really wanting the 5.5 inch iPhone too.

There looks to be a lot of compromises with these devices, mainly portability. It seems like most men would find it tricky fitting in the front pocket of their jeans. It looks cumbersome to use it as a phone holding it to your head. It's difficult or impossible to use one handed.

The main purposes seem to be for someone that is interested in watching a lot of video, playing games or as an e-reading type device in place of an iPad or Kindle.

Asides from that, are there any other reasons people are opting for these big screen phones? Or is it a case of 'bigger=better'?

If you're thinking of getting the 5.5 iPhone, why over the 4.7? How will you carry it and do you own a tablet?

Interested for some discussion on this.

How many people really use their phone with one hand? Besides on the can that is :p But, really....90% of use of smart phones these days have nothing to do with voice. It's all data.

Ive never understood the infactuation with using a phone one handed. Sure to take a call one handed use is ideal. However for everything else doesnt everyone hold the phone in one hand and use their second hand to navigate/type? I have done that since the iphone 1 and so does everyone else I know. I guess one handed operation is for when people are standing up as oppose to sitting down.

I'm on transit a lot and use it one handed while holding on to the skytrain pole or whatever. And I never really use it in one hand and tap on it with the other - the only two handed use I have is typing, holding to watch a video or playing a game.

What about those of you that jog, cycle or work out? I do all those things, the 5.5 may be too cumbersome to take on a run.

Forget the phone! Phones are dead if we're talking voice com. But the search for the ideal mini tablet is over. 6" diagonal is the magic max! Writing this on a nexus7 that for many tasks has been a tad big. Now I can't decide. Note3 or iphone6plus?

As some of you mentioned, phone nowadays aren't used to make calls anymore. Heck people picking up their friends waiting for them would rather text them to come out than to make a quick call. People love to text or watch videos on their phones now. Bigger screen the better.

I prefer the smaller phone..but the reason why is because people want it and are willing to pay for it..it will probably outsell the smaller one...

Then why do I see people talking on their phones all the time? ;)

Because larger phones provide better aerodynamics and balance for Chihuahua toting starlets who hang a suitcase off their elbow and hold their phone like it was a server's tray.

i wonder what are your thoughts about 10.1"? i had Note 10.1 over two years as my only phone. :D Until I got Oneplus One on the last week and now I have a pocket size phone again...

Different choices for different people. I have pretty small hands, so the 4.7 fits my needs pretty well. I don't really need large screens for video or reading, I'm good with a smaller size.

The iPhone 5 is too small and their little stretching experiment didn't really do too much, so I'm glad they've finally released a phone that is larger. Offering a much larger version out there for people who want it is a very good business move — people clearly want big phones today. A lot has changed from 2 years ago.

Waiting for pendulum to swing the other way. I use the phone the most. Give us HD voice, great speaker audio, and a compact device. Phablets are stupid.

Yes - and thank you for mentioning audio!!

Wish apple put similar thought into audio as Nokia with their Rich Recording.

The speaker on the 4S seems pretty good. Stereo would be better.

I prefer the smaller screen.

Story of my life, you nailed it. Thats exactly whats going through my head lol ... Decisions decisions

Having seen the 5.5" in the launch and the hands on videos on YouTube, I have to say it's reinforced my view that it is far too big for me as a phone. The 4.7" appears to be a hefty jump and the iP6 plus looks a little too huge.

Still, it appears popular already. :)
