Both the iPod and the box set should be available by the time you read this
From that it seems this was written before the iPod was released, and before the box set is out, because both the iPod and the U2 collection are out now.

If Apple releases a 5GB version of the mini in Janurary, i'll be so pissed. 😡

... And so will some other people. And, guess what, even more people will be pleased. Sorry man, but you can't please everyone... 😎

Out of curiosity, is there a difference between Apple Lossless and AAC? Or are they two names for the same thing?

Using AAC or MP3, you can store more than 100 songs in the same amount of space as a single CD. Discerning customers and audiophiles want true CD audio, and now iTunes can give you that quality with the new Apple Lossless encoder. You’ll get the full quality of uncompressed CD audio using about half the storage space. You can copy music in this format onto your iPod or iPod mini, to take perfect audio wherever you go.

AAC along with MP3 are lossy formats. They dump out data that isnt really heard like the extreme highs and lows.

The lossless format doesnt do that. only real audiophiles can really hear the difference. I can hear a difference between cd and encoded but its not enough to want me to go lossless. I can only hear a slight difference between 128 and 192. I usually encode at 128 AAC. I also figure that Apple sells it at 128 AAC so its really good enough for me. I'd go 192 if I didnt have so much music.

...Whereas audiophiles like me can totally hear the difference, and as a result, I would never encode in 128 kbps AAC as it is unacceptable. But, as you said, for the average Joe who doesn't have a discerning ear and doesn't care, 128 kbps AAC is acceptable - and that's all Apple is really targeting, the masses, which is as it should be - it's good enough for 90% of the people out there... 😎

My girlfriend tried to buy me an iPod mini for Xmas - she called the apple store here in UK and was told that they were sold out. The customer service woman then told her there's no point trying to get one for Xmas anyway as a new iPod mini is out in January.

I wonder...

iPod mini, 5GB, 229$US.

While Apple recently has upgraded computer products (iBook, iMac) while simultaneously lowering the price on the entry level, they have not done this with any iPod release yet. They up the config, and keep the lowest price point static. This is not to say they won't lower the mini price at MWSF, just that I think it highly unlikely.

5GB mini, 15 hour battery, new DEEP colors (yellow, purple, blue, orange, black), same $249US price point.

But what the heck do I know, anyway?
