I meant the sidebar icons on the left side of the Finder window, not the actual icons on the desktop (see example image below). I don't think they would be an easy thing to change unfortunately.

to change the size of this go into general preferences and alter sidebar icon size (small, medium or large)

Any way to get the finder icons back down to snow leopard size (they look larger for some reason)

Already answered above this post (System Prefs, General, "Sidebar icon size")

Also, this is kinda big for me, any way to rearrange the order in the finder sidebar so that devices are on the top?

Thanks!

The only thing I found so far is to drag the individual "devices" to the "favorites" section. Not quite what I'm looking for, especially since a new disk will need to be moved instead of it automatically going to the top. :(

How do you burn a Lion DVD once you've installed Lion? The installer deletes itself when you install the OS.

Just redownload it from the app store. It will let you DL again free if you already purchased. Just option-click on selection in the app store.

Can't reload even with option click

Thanks for this post, because I had the same question as baryon.

When I go into the App Store and locate the Lion page, in notes that Lion is installed. When I try the suggested option click on the 'installed' button, nothing happens.
Any clue why?

With the new gesture to open Spaces, I cannot swipe to go back when I am in Finder. Anyone know if there's a setting I can change or a differen swipe I can perform to achieve this?

Thanks in advance!
Mike S.

To swipe backwards/forwards in Finder, press the option key then 2-finger swipe.

One thing I'm missing

I miss the ability to click and hold on an app in the dock and see all open windows for that app. I know I can use the three-finger down motion on the trackpad to do the same thing, and maybe I will get used to it, but I don't always have the trackpad available, and I still try to click and hold even when I do. Is there any way to make Lion do this one thing?

If I am thinking of the same thing, its working here

I have 2 safari windows open, click and hold and the pop up shows me the 2 windows that are there (at the top of the list)

#5 Need a Lion Install DVD?: A DVD copy of Lion is handy for those who don’t want to re-download a nearly 4GB file everytime you need to install Lion or need to use it as a bootup disk to diagnose a problem with a computer, or even use it when you replace your hard drive.

For problem diagnosis people can simply reboot their Mac holding cmd+r to enter the recovery partition. The disc or USB drive is still useful for installing to multiple Macs w/o need to redownload, or if you replace your hard drive. I just wanted to point out that diagnosis via "boot disc" is till possible without burning a DVD or making a USB drive.

I'm sorry.. my fault I was not clear. Start the app store and option-click "purchases" and you should see Lion now with an option to "install."

Download works but no (in)visible file called 'Install Mac OS X Lion.app'

Hello Weaselboy,

That was a great help, but I also need to do 'option-click' on the install button otherwise I got a message that a newer version was already installed and had to be moved.
So with option-click the install started, but (install not concluded yet) no file with the name 'Install Mac OS X Lion.app'. Searching for (in)visible files that were last modified on my Mac today didn't result in any file that was in any way related to a lion download, despite the fact that the launchpad showed an icon indicating lion was downloading.

Is it just a matter to wait until the download has completed and not restarting, but first looking for the file putting it on a CD / USB and removing the entire download?

Thx for any suggestions.

Yep, that was it just wait until the download is completed and the "Install Mac OS X Lion" appears in the Applications folder.

Cheers,

Cant find mentioned app

To make a DVD of Lion simply find your ‘Install Mac OS X Lion.app’

Your tips are great but I can't seem to find any app named "install Mac OS X lion.app" anywhere on my computer. When I downloaded Lion it locked near the end then gave an error message. It then proceeded to install itself.

I am concerned that my installation is not completed but the App Store will not let me download again. Steve: Am I missing something?

Hi Kanunu,
If you follow Weaselboy's suggestions and use option click rather than click the App Store will allow you to re-install. When the install starts, you just quit that and you'll find the program "Install MAC OS X Lion" in your Application folder. Make sure you make a backup with TimeMachine to ensure you always have a copy for future use.

Cheers,

Thanks to gjlortzer but seeking clarification

I am downloading again now (thanks to Weaselboy.) Do I understand you right that I need to start the installation after the download then stop it after it starts. Seems a little scarey!! If the installation is incomplete does the OS revert to the prior state?

Thank you so much for the tips. I just installed Lion over Snow Leopard about an hour and a half ago, and during the first 10 minutes I didn't like it as much, and hated that they got rid of the status bar at the bottom of the window, but your thread helped me out with that, and with classic mail view, and the scroll bars. Now, if there was a way to get back the aqua scroll bars, Lion will be even better.

Snow Leopard's interface was so lively. However, I have really come to appreciate Lion's interface. It is less distracting. I don't miss scroll bars at all. At first, I was concerned that I would feel a bit lost without them. However, since they appear as soon as you begin scrolling, it's not an issue. Lion's interface is not bright and colorful like SL, but it makes more sense from a user productivity perspective. You phase it out to focus on content. It is a definite improvement over SL, although I really miss the powder-blue screen when you turn the computer on. It looked beautiful against my white Macbook.

!!! Don't click Install !!!

Nope, the program, will open the first window itself, where you can click "Install". Do not, I repeat not, click that install button. Instead quit out of the installer (File>Quit). Next you can look for the program in the Applications folder.

Trust this clarifies.

Exactly. I have an even simpler solution than these 5 tips. I have just 1 tip.

1) Don't upgrade to Lion.

Some things are useful, some not, and some it is nice to have the option to switch between the old and new style.

Great Post !

@ LimeiBook86

Thanks!

Your post is very well thought out, organized and quite helpful.

Cheers... :)

Another tip:

Go to System Prefs/General and change "Sidebar Icon Size" to Small to get rid of the obnoxiously big text/icons in Finder.

Great Post

Hi! I only registered here to thank you for a very great post. I upgraded my macbook air to Lion and I wasn't enamored by some of the changes. And, I was lucky enough to see this post. Thank you very much. Now, I get to enjoy the great features of Lion with the look and feel of Snow Leopard. I always love to see the info of the path and number of files and I was truly not satisfied when I thought Apple removed this feature in finder, until I discover your post. Anyway, I'm a great fan of people who generously share information that do matter and can help others instead of what they ate or have been to, lol!!! Love your post a lot that I also placed it in my wall in facebook. Thank you again so much.
