The legend of column headings follows each chart. My comments and analysis follow the charts.

As tradition dictates, measurements were taken on July 3rd and I've started this thread on July 4th. Happy U.S. Independence Day!

You know the drill: These charts and the discussion here are simply for amusement and general interest. Posting in the forums simply to pad your post count is not permitted.

Columns:
  1. Rank = Position in order by post count, 1 (highest) to 50.
  2. Current Top 50 = members with the 50 currently highest post counts.
  3. Cur Posts = # of posts by that member.
  4. Cur Rate = average # posts per day by that member over the last 6 months, or for the length of their membership if they joined less than 6 months ago.
  5. Prev Rank = previous rank, as of 6 months ago (January 2008), or "---" for those who are new to the Top 50.
  6. Delta Rank = change in rank, i.e., # of slots +higher or -lower in rank since 6 months ago.

Length of membership

Mean average among active posters in the Top 50: 55.7 months (57.2 if you include inactive posters)
Standard deviation: 15.6 (17.3 if you include inactive posters)

The three members with the longest memberships among active Top 50 posters remain the same:
First place: arn, at 86.8 months (7.24 years).

Second place: Rower_CPU, 81.0 months (6.75 years)

Third place: Mr. Anderson, 80.1 months (6.67 years)

Inactive jefhatfield has the overall oldest membership, 95.8 months (7.99 years), based on registration dates, although arn was of course at the site first!
Shortest: dynamicv, 28.0 months (2.33 years)
Second-shortest: Eraserhead, 32.0 months (2.67 years)
The graph below shows the distribution of length of membership among the Top 50. The current distribution is in blue. The distribution from 6 months ago is in red.

The largest group has 3- to 5-year memberships, led by a smaller group of 5- to 7-year members. It now requires at least 2 years of membership to make the Top 50.

Comments on the Current Top 50 Posters chart

Changed members

Only three new members joined the Top 50 list (half as many as last time), and none made the Top 25:
psychofreak (#37)
twoodcc (#44)
Eraserhead (#48)

Note: psychofreak has recently decided to retire from the forums.
Of course that means that three member are no longer in the Top 50. For the second time in a row, the former holder of position #41 has dropped off the list (previous ranks are shown in parens):
dcv (#41)
Chip NoVaMac (#45)
MacBandit (#50)

Changes in rank

Highest rise in rank: robbieduncan and IJ Reilly, each up 13 slots
Next highest:
MacNut (up 10)

The only leap into the Top 25 was iBlue (up 9 to position #21).

In the last 12 months, bartelby has climbed an amazing 29 slots (#46 to #17). Others in the double-digits: iBlue up 19 slots, robbieduncan up 17 slots, Jaffa Cake up 15 slots, and dynamicv up 11 slots.

Highest loss in rank: iGAV, down 12 slots
Next highest:
jefhatfield and iMeowbot (each down 10)

Nobody else dropped more than 5 slots.

A record-setting 10 members (3 more than last time) retained their position in the Top 50 list:
mad jew (#1)
Mr. Anderson (#2)
Doctor Q (#5)
Blue Velvet (#8)
edesignuk (#9)
devilot (#12)
iGary (#13)
yellow (#14)
WildCowboy (#18)
MacRumorUser (#40)

Almost all of these are moderators. Maybe that's how MacRumors decides who should be a moderator, and the others above should be promoted immediately!
Only three members have the rank they had 12 months ago:
mad jew (#1 since the July 2007 stats)
Mr. Anderson (#2 since the July 2007 stats)
edesignuk (#9 since the January 2007 stats)

Mitthrawnuruodo was #25 a year ago, was #22 six months ago, and is back to #25 now.

dcv missed making the Top 50 by 176 posts (0.97 posts per day, the equivalent of 1 post every 1.03 days).
Next was Chip NoVaMac, who missed by 503 posts (2.76 posts per day).

In the past, people have typically missed the Top 50 by much smaller margins, but this time it wasn't close.

Changes in the Top 10

mkrishnan, who moved past Doctor Q for the #4 slot last time, has now moved past jsw for the #3 slot. Mr. Anderson may be in his sights!

jsw is still ahead of Doctor Q despite not having posted much recently.

wdlove, retired since November 2005 except for a brief return in March 2007, has dropped only 1 slot, from #6 to #7, swapping places with ~Shard~, now in the #6 position.

For the first time ever, half of the Top 10 have 20,000 or more posts, as I predicted 6 months ago. My prediction that 34 of the Top 50 would have 10,000 or more posts was close; the actual number is 31.

Together, the Top 50 members have made a total of 630,609 posts. I predicted it would be 641,192. They have obviously been slacking off!

Posts in the last 6 months

Note: This section always excludes members who were not in my radar 6 months ago, since I didn't track their post histories. No members fall into that category this time. I try to spot up-and-coming top posters as well as the current set, but sometimes I miss predicting the arrival of a new high poster.

Highest number of posts in 6 months: Eraserhead, 3,438 posts, 18.9 posts per day
Next-highest:
PlaceofDis (2,733 posts, 15.0/day)
Abstract (2,693 posts, 14.8/day)
bartelby (2,655 posts, 14.6/day)

Only Eraserhead had over 3,000 posts in 6 months:

In addition to Abstract and bartelby, these 4 members had over 2,000 posts in 6 months:
MacNut (2,514)
Eidorian (2,460)
robbieduncan (2,247)
iBlue (2,185)

Another 16 members had post counts between 1,000 and 2,000 in 6 months.

Members with the highest post counts in six months who did not make the Top 50:
xUKHCx (3,215 posts, 17.7 posts/day)
clevin (2,353 posts, 12.9 posts/day)
bigandy (1651 posts, 9.1 posts/day)
sushi (1,361 posts, 7.5 posts/day)
Sesshi (1,256 posts, 6.9 posts/day)
Peace (1,206 posts, 6.6 posts/day)
LimeiBook86 (1,022 posts, 5.6 posts/day)
Lowest post counts:
These inactive members stayed in the Top 50: wdlove, bousozoku, eyelikeart, jefhatfield, iMeowbot.

iMeowbot made only one post in 6 months, on April Fool's Day.

Next-lowest:
jelloshotsrule (15 posts)
vniow (45 posts)
Rower_CPU (71 posts)

Excluded members and posts

MacRumors "bots" (members Macrumors, MacBytes, DailyTunes) and banned members are excluded from my tracking, but none would have made the Top 50. Members who retire voluntarily (e.g., wdlove) are included, even if they are no longer active, since it's interesting to see how long they hold their positions.

Members can lose posts due to deletion or Wastelanding of threads, or in rare cases when there is a change in which forums count posts or a thread is moved to a different forum. In the last 6 months, this reduced the post count of two Top 50 members:
wdlove lost 1 post
bousozoku lost 2 posts

Tomorrow I will post my 6-month Top Poster projections!

Interesting - as a side thought - has there ever been a thread/competition to collate the most amusing/informative posts for a given time span? Just out of curiousity - as the figures given indicate a lot of posting going on - there must be some corkers in there!

Sorry, we wouldn't know anything about that. There is however this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/285373/

Although I can't confirm - I believe jefhatfield is reborn as 63dot (there was a recent reference in the PRSI forum by 63dot to this effect, but it appears to be edited out).

If true - the "combined" posts would put jefhatfield at 9352 posts and into position #35 - dropping Mord off the top 50.

fwiw.

I am sure that with just a little over 1100 posts I am in the top few thousand posters:cool:

If PRSI posts were included, I might even make the top 100...

I'm curious now - so what are the top most posting posters posting about? Are these 1-2 liner posts? Are they Moderators?
e.g.
Eraserhead, 3,438 posts, 18.9 posts per day
PlaceofDis (2,733 posts, 15.0/day)
Abstract (2,693 posts, 14.8/day)
bartelby (2,655 posts, 14.6/day)
xUKHCx (3,215 posts, 17.7 posts/day)

I'm curious how many posts I was behind eraserhead for most posts since January.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll be on the End of Time list.

Fantastic work as always Q!

Pointless banter....I mean intelligent conversation about astrophysics.

Hey Q just curious but when will the top 50 all be 10,000 posts or more. Any estimates how long it will take.

A long time. :p
Always fun to see the stats. Maybe one day I'll be there. Nah, probably not. But congrats to everyone on there, and keep up the mindless spamage!;)

Doctor Q, many thanks for the number crunching. Most impressive. I'm glad my amazing level of spaming of the last 6 months has had some effect :D
