I'm liking the 7k500 a lot. Is it completely silent? No, but it doesn't make much noise at all and there is virtually no vibration. Recommended!

Hi there, i just ordered the 15" i7 High-res antiglate, and my only delemma was 5400 or 7200rm. I chose the 7200 one and crossing my finger not to regret it! What do u think of it? I'm guessing noise and vibration is no longer an issue thanx to your post, but Heat? Visible difference in speed?

Thanx

I would like to know the same...

Too much is being made about heat and vibration. Todays 7200rpm drives are the only way to go (if we are talking hard drives, not SSD). I've had them in the last three MacBook Pros I've owned and they are fast, smooth and quiet. Forget heat and battery life, there is no difference.

As far as SSD (solid state drives) they are still too new and have issues in a variety of areas. Google SSD's if you want the details. Give them another year and then they will be ready for prime time.

So, stop, relax, and get a 7200rpm drive with your new MacBook Pro... :)

Thanks a lot for your recommendation.

Thanx a lot man, you're right, i mean its Apple, u can'tt go wrong. But I read somewhere that because the upgrade was only $50 (cheap), that it might be a generous overpriced upgrade, or litteraly a cheap upgrade, but i'm sure that's BS! Dont know how much upgrades cost before though....

Anyways, thank u very much for the reply, i feel much better, because i've been with the Mac mini G4 for 4 years and was waiting to get the perfect MBP!

Ehm Ehm... What do you exactly mean with "doesn't make much noise" and "virtually no vibration"? A good seller could use these terms to sell ice to eskimos :D:D

For those who have the 7200 RPM: can you tell which drive is put on by default by Apple? (Brand and model).
Can I go with that or is it better to make a manual swap with a custom unit? (e.g. Hitachi 7K500).

Thank you!

you can't go wrong with hitachi's travelstar 500gb 7200rpm

I bought two and keep the 2nd mirror copied in case of the fallout that seagate's 500gb 7200rpm drive had, but so far no problems to report. Wife uses my old hitachi 320gb 7200 drive and it has far better battery life, not to say the new generation 500gb one sucks, but yes you'll see a change in battery life. On my new i7 15" it is not as bad, but the 13" unibody first gen with removable battery it took away 2 hours from me. Well worth the trade off in any case though, is a quick HDD

I ordered the 15" i7, 7200 rpm, so there is a reduction in battery life? do u see any other good/bad? and what do u think of it overall?

5400 Today or order and wait for a 7200

My question is i can go to the apple store and get a 17" with a 5400 today or order and wait for a 7200. I will just be programming using eclipse, running apache and tomcat with VMWare fusion for Windows 7 to test. Is the 7200 worth the wait? Why does apple not have 7200 standard on a 17"?

Why does apple not have 7200 standard on a 17"?

That's what I'm also wondering (on the 15'' as well). If heat is not an issue,as most people seem to claim, then why is that the case? Noise and vibration maybe? Shorter lifespan? I really don't get why it's not a default option.

I'm hoping for someone who's got the new model with 7200 to post on this - first impressions on noise, vibration, heat.
I have yet to see those issues addressed (on a new MBP),so it's either too soon,or all is good.

no added heat, vibration or noise with my hitachi 7200 500gb drive in 15" i7

My results are showing added battery life, which is odd since I lost a bit on my 13" macbook unibody. I can't explain that. But in general 7200 drives that apple uses are from seagate which are not as efficient as hitachi therefore they would have to dock down 8-9 hrs to maybe 6-8.

Of course even these hours are only achieved word processing anyways.

Cheers for the answer,harmonica01. It's difficult to make a decision without having all bases covered.

Seeing how many people give high praise to Hitachi 7200 500gb,and considering Apple is not using that, I'll probably go with the base 5400 and do an upgrade myself. Or wait and read, and wait, and read

Hi, so is it the hitachi 500GB 7200 rpm the one they upgrade your 15" MBP i7 to if you order it in the apple store with the 7200 option???? is that how yours came? What do u recommend then? I ordered it with 7200 rpm, but if its not worth it I can still cancel my order.......

Also, i saw that the 15" i7 5400 rpm in the store have a Hitachi 500GB.

Thanx

I received my MBP 2.53 15" 7200 rpm 500 gb hd high gloss today. No issues with heat, vibration over the last four hours or so. I'm VERY pleased so far!

apple is still using seagate's 500gb 7200rpm drives despite their horrid ratings for failure; they have many of them

apple is also using toshiba 8mb cache 5400rpm 500gb drives and my friends at galleria houston store confirm also that is the only 500/5400 drive they have seen thus far in 15 and 17"

Get whatever comes standard and use it as a mirror drive but 89 shipped from newegg for hitachi's 7200rpm/500gb drive is a killer deal for what you get

So now the question is, is the hitachi 500GB 5400 rpm better or the Seagate 500GB 7200 rpm?

Please give me one final advice, i have 3 years apple care so I cant change the Hard Disk to Hitachi 7200 rpm till then; so can you please tell me what's better to buy? i can get it tmrw from store 5400 rpm (and cancel my order), or wait 2 weeks for the custom 7200 rpm Seagate i ordered (+$50)? unless the 7200 rpm are not Seagate but Hitachi!???? or unless the Seagate 7200 is much better and more worth it than the Hitachi 5400!?!?!

Thanx

Just because you have applecare doesn't mean you can't change the drive.
Just the new drive is no longer covered. Everything else still is...
This has been discussed until Steve Jobs became blue in the face in the forums.

I would check with Apple, but I don't believe upgrading your harddrive would void the warranty/protection plan (so long as you don't break anything while doing it). Personally I would go with the 7200. Since no matter which one you buy, you should keep your data backed up.

Ok, but is it still better to get the MBP with gd 5400 hitachi or "bad" seagate 7200rpm?? I mean how bad is the seagate? Worth the $50 and a 2 week wait??? as i'm in the UK due to flights problem. Or just get the 5400 from store tmrw!? They have the 15" i7 hi res antiglare 5400 rpm i want in stock. I have ordered the 7200 but i think i could still cancel the order if 5400 is a better option....!

Thanx

So should i cancel MBP i7 with 500GB 7200 rpm Seagate order and stick to 500GB 5400 rpm MBP that i can get in stock?? i mean how much better "quality" is hitachi than Seagate?

SlowER hitachi 500GB that i can get in store or wait 10 days for 7200 rpm seagate? i could still cancel order if slow hitachi is overall better

Thanx

I swapped out my stock 15" i7 harddrive and it was a Hitachi.

I put in the Seagate 7200k and so far so good. I don't notice any added heat, noise, or vibration. To early to tell on battery life.

I think Im going to get the base 2.4 i5 w/320gb hard drive and replace it with a 7K500. The 500gb 7200rpm upgrade from apple is +$150, and the 7k500 is 89.99 + you can get $10 off with a promo code (ends 4/22) + free shipping from Newegg.

Seems like a no-brainer, and I can throw the 320 in an external enclosure.
