When I went to the Apple store the genius said they don't have enough information yet to tell what vibrations are normal with the 7200. It is not violent shaking like some have complained about but there is a noticeable hum.

i've got the new 17" i5 MBP and the standard 500gb 5400 drive from the apple store. first i upgraded to the seagate 7200.4. not a nice experience, i hated the vibrations on the palm rest und this humming sound.
then i exchanged it to the hitachi 7k500. now it is really nice, it isn't noisier, hotter or louder than the original hitachi 5k500.b which was built in.

i really can recommend the 7k500. Fast, smooth, quiet.....i guess the best choice of all mechanical hdds......i'm sure i'd like an ssd better, but i'm just not crazy enough to spend a little fortune for 256gb.

Your post is exactly what I am experiencing. Of course I ordered my on-line on the release date so there was no real-world test for me until I got it. C'est la vie. Someone told me I should investigate the Intel X25-M G2 SSD to resolve it.

Eventually I might pop in a Hitachi drive but I can live with the low hum for now. It doesn't seem to be any issue with the drive just probably the way it is built.

Hi,
I received my i7 MBP with a 5400 disk and I must see that I don't see yet any noticeable difference to the 7200. Boot time is super fast, copying files via Firewire as well. I have a 08 UMBP with a 7200 disk before.

what was your 08 UMBP harddrive capacity?
