I like auto-correction, but I do think it would be handy to be able to disable at times. Like when IMing, I use lots of short versions and slang, so it would be nice if auto-correction was off for that.

i don't know how it is on english but on german it's so horrible. No word is right

Being able to view and edit the dictionary would be great in addition to having the option to disable the autocorrection.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that there's something on a jailbroke phone that allows you to turn off the auto correct.

Not entirely sure, just something I think I read somewhere.

Same here. On rare occasions it can be a pain, but it saves me way more often.

Agreed.
It's maybe 5% annoyance, but 95% life-saver/time-saver.

A disable option would be nice -- as I can see rare times where you may need to have it off. However, I would MUCH rather have the ability to add words to the dictionary quicker. The whole "type it enough times and it gets added" approach is unreliable and unpredictable. Some words I've typed just a few times have been added, while other words I type on a daily basis have yet to be included in the dictionary, and are always attempting to be corrected!

i like the autocorrect, it just needs a add new words to the dictionary type of thing so i can add things like lol and ur and omfg and omg and wtf and stuff like that.

yep. mine is jailbroken and i can turn autocorrection on and off at a whim.

I like it, my phone knows me well by now and it makes me an even faster typer imo.

I suppose I could see it being an option for those who don't want it.

Autocorrect is great when you communicate in a single language, but please remember that a lot of people live a bilingual or multilingual life. Immigrants all over the world; the Spanish community in the US; people of all nationalities who communicate a lot in English on the web; countries with two or more official languages (Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland etc etc etc). I'm Swedish and I write in English half of the time, as I have a lot of foreign clients, colleagues and friends. We also use numerous English terms in daily speech (especially tech terminology) that haven't made it into the Swedish dictionary, and the iPhone insists on replacing these with all sorts of senseless stuff, and you only notice when the recipient responds "what do you mean 'Please milk my hello oven'? Are you high?"

This is the worst conceivable implementation of spell checking in history, because it's based on a "guilty until proven innocent" principle. I'm usually very much innocent of typos and I shouldn't have to prove to the bleedin' phone that I actually know what I'm typing. I'll be happy to take suggestions for words, though.

DISABLE THE AUTO CORRECTION!

Nice thread title, I thought you found a way to disable it.
