Should Apple speed up the process of making the 5870 readily available for Mac Pros?

  • Yes, it's extremely frustrating that it's taken this long already. Issue needs to be solved ASAP

  • No, the waiting time for 5870 Upgrade Option for 2006-2009 Mac Pro users seems reasonable

Meh.... 6970 or BUST!

I'm going to wait for the HD 6970 to come out and flash it for Mac use.

That is, of course, when the video card kext gods such as Rominator, Cindori, etc... get their hands on it and do their magic!!!!

Just wanted to update and say that I got the power cable as promised and the 5870 is hooked up and working perfectly in my Mac Pro right now.

Macpartsonline came through and I have a nice Radeon 5870 now!

Check the "Link Speed" on the System Profiler (under PCI Cards).

5770 available in toronto

Just want to let you know that my local Apple Store on Square One in Mississauga (that's Greater Toronto Area) has quite a few 5770s - I picked one up earlier today. Didn't ask about 5870.
My old mac pro 1.1 is running very well with the card: 30" ACD on DVI and 23" ACD on MDP to DVI adapter.
Also runs great (so far - haven't tested it yet on any games) on Windows 7 64bit with latest Catalyst drivers.

cheers
adrian

btw I'm new here but long time reader:)

Not going to happen until Apple releases the 6970.

Update: Macsales no longer has the 5870 in stock. It's listed as "OUT OF STOCK". So there are officially no resellers carrying the 5870. This situation seems really depressing. If only Apple would provide an explanation as to why it's been delayed for so long. :(

That I am.
I'll use the 5870 for OS X and the 6970 for Bootcamp.
If I can do it, I'd really like to use the 6990 for Bootcamp.
.

I have thought about doing something similar -- assuming no power cable issues inside the mac pro in installing it -- do you simply have to switch cables on your monitor to the 6970 / 6990 once you boot into bootcamp (since these won't natively run in the mac on pc version).

I am not sure.
I believe Nanofrog was talking about some kind of DVI switch.
NewEgg has a number of those that may work.
My monitor has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 so I'd have to make sure the DVI switch can handle that kind of resolution.

My monitor has two DVI ports.
I may be able to plug each video card in a separate DVI port.
Maybe then all I have to do to change video cards is use the "input" button on the front of my monitor.

ildondeigiocchi; Could you check; with apple representatives; whether this card (ati 5870) will find its way to Middle East or not, please???

Hey iWolf00, I'm sure that if you call Apple on their hotline 1-800-MY-APPLE, they would be able to answer you. However, the way things are going at the moment we'll be lucky if this product will make it on the market

Thanks, but I am staying outside US and this number is for US residence only. :(( So there is no way I can ask them about when and where

Well, it seems the Pro market is not interested in GPU upgrade; no wonder apple seems very slow in updating their MPro GPU regularly.

Also, I start to wonder why ATI don’t release a GPU that can run on Mac OSX. I believe we will get Both ATI 6850, 6870 & 6970 once its released. That is better than waiting of a FULL year for apple to release them and another +3months to get them as an upgrade.

Apple is lucky because her customers enjoy waiting for its product and upgrade kit!

I rather think that more and more customers are going back to Windows based workstations because of things like this.

Apparently Apple wants to lose its Pro customers and become a mobile and iOS company all the way.

Honestly I love Apple and all and when I made my switch from Windows three years ago I loved Apple because of their dedication to the PRO market but that seems to have a become a segment of the market they are rapidly forgetting about despite the fact that pros are the people who helped establish them as a reliable company in the past. Come on Apple we just want a graphics card we're not asking you to perform miracles! :(

Looks like I might wait a while then before buying a regular card and flashing it.

At least I'm glad someone is looking into the matter.
Calling a local apple retailer here in europe is like talking to a wall since they know just as much as we do.

*crosses fingers*

That's what I'm thinking.
I mean it would be totally ok if they would make an official statement saying that AMD can't supply them with enough cards (if this is what causes the issues), but this way? Sorry, that's just ****in with their customers.

Just received order confirmation from apple.... Order will ship dec. 22 and received dec. 28 with expedited shipping. I ordered mine on the second day it became available so they should start shipping as of dec. 21 as many others have said bittersweet moment but at least they will ship

I wish I was able to place my order when it was available. Now have to wait until that order button pop back up whenever apple feels like it.

Odd, How come I don't see the green "Add to cart" button on that card even if they now know when they will be able to ship it?? :s

Even weirder, how come you and many other people could order it at hte apple store if there wasn't even an add to card button in the first place?
