Shipping delay has been lowered on most European Stores from 7-10 days to 5 days so looking more and more positive for next week update.
Unfortunately, that doesn't mean anything : they did the same thing last week and raised the delay again on monday.

I've seen exactly one article (from The Register) that gives any sort of timeline for the MPC8641D. Do you have other sources?

Sure, here's one from OSNews:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=8548&page=2

EETimes:

They all report the same information, because that information was given them directly by Freescale. Freescale would have to have been lying, or been able to ramp things up more than 6 months ahead of schedule to have processors in production already, and I just don't think it's possible.

And that quote about the G3 didn't come from me. I don't see any problem with Apple continuing to support the G3, in fact I applaud them for it.

Oh, thanks very much.

And the G3 quote came from loserman; sorry if I implied that it came from you. I'll give you the only defense that I have: "It was late and I was tired."

Picked up interesting note on another forum (whilst awaiting for MR to refresh :D ) --->

Hello all, I've been following this thread for about two weeks or so (when I ordered my BTO PB). It still hasn't come, and in fact I got an email from apple lastnight saying it was delayed (again), to be shipped on the 2nd of Feb.

Anyone else have PB orders will similair delay announcements ? Seems that Feb 2nd is THE date ;)

Hee. Wasn't that the punchline to a hilariously bad Far Side cartoon?

Someone else has already mentioned that he was sent notification that his order would ship on the 14th.

When the actual ship date occurs might provide a clue as to what's coming. For instance, if they're shipping on the 14th, that's over a two-week wait. That orders would be on hold that long could imply that we'll be seeing a G5. Of course, if they're shipping on the 2nd, there's nothing special about that date and no press event scheduled, so if they're coming that soon I'd bet on a G4 speedbump.

from a few forums i've seen, multiple ppl have said that their orders have been put on "hold" till febuary 14th. "hold" is quite a odd word to use, wouldn't you say?

That's me with the February 14th shipping. In MY eyes this "long" wait is just another Apple delay. As I mentioned before, when I bought my first Aluminium Powerbook in 2003 I had to wait FOUR months before I got it. I had time to prepare myself for fatherhood for almost HALF a year AND be a father before I got my computer. Now THAT'S delay. And there wasn't even TALK about new or uppdated versions.

Of course, I would love the delay to be an indication of Powerbook updates, but I just can't see my current order - with a specific price tag and BTO - to suddenly be transformed into an updated version. I mean, how do Apple interpret my order? Should they give me my 5400 rpm, 128 mb graphics and 512 mb ram (1 module) computer with the NEW 1.67 ghz (instead of 1,5) processor at the same price? It just doens't make sense.

Has anyone experienced that kind of automatic switch?

macnews.net.tc (never heard of them till i saw the link on applenova forum post) is reporting ati x700 mobility graphics card in the upcoming g4 updates.

that would be neat - it would explain the delay, and the x700 seems to be made for a powerbook sized-laptop.

but i thought the x700 was pci-express? does anything apple makes support pci-express?

A bus-speed-bump and this graphics boost would make a sweet machine.

AFAIK, ATI makes an AGP version of the x700. For the 12", though, I'd be happy with a 9600. It's better than a fx5200....

i'm playing the long waiting game at the mo as well, i've been on "hold" for ages now (i ordered a 17" pb 4 weeks ago now). i've heard tell from resellers that upgrades for back orders may go ahead.

PCI Express is much faster than AGP 8X. I think Apple would use the newer x700 - why bother with the older 9600?

What is the reason that the current 12" does not have the 9700m in it? Was it a size issue or what?

I think that if the x700 rumor is accurate then Apple would most definately jump to that rather than a r9600 (for 12), however I guess there might be some marketing advantage to have the 15 and 17 models with a faster card. Personally....the fx5200 is one major reason I won't be buying a 12 (at least right now). I really just detest that card (although is does EVERYTHING needed for output for an ultra-mobile).

Hopefully Apple at least announces something soon. I want to know what is going on and at least place my order....since I will most likely be forced into waiting 2-3 weeks to get the darn thing :(

2-3 weeks! You wish! If the update is the most insignificant change in the history of Apple, the wait will be that long. Otherwise, you'll probably end up waiting a month. Look at the Mac mini backlog, and they had a stockpile built up.

Last time i tried to buy a PowerBook, I had to cancel my order after 4 weeks and buy a Dell because it was available immediately and I could no longer wait. And Dell is famous for putting you on hold for a week or two before they build your craptastic computer.

Now, a few years down the pipe, that Dell's screen decided that the backlight was done. The bulb is good, the inverter is fine, and if you tilt the screen at just the right angle, you can even see your wallpaper and the start menu, but it's all dark otherwise. I've been waiting 5 months for an announcement to buy a PowerBook to replace it, and I'm off to Europe in late Summer, so I absolutely need one released by June so I can be sure I'll have it in time. Hopefully, it'll be a major new machine for a major new adventure.

I think it is mostly a heat issue. If the mobile x700 is cool enough it might make its way into the 12" - but I'm not holding my breath.

AGP 8x was mostly a gimmick anyway, it had almost no bearing on card performance.

PCI-E is different, there are some fairly incredible performance gains on PCI-E cards. So 'w00t' for it.

OK so one of the rumor sites is predicting updates this coming Tuesday for the PB line. I think sufficient lead time from MacWorld would dictate a quiet release of an updated PB line.

If it is too quiet, nobody will buy it. Sorry, just had to say it.
